The second half of the
holiday doubleheader saw one hundred cars check in for racing
action Sunday and the first two feature races to take to the
track saw the late race drama develop. A full field of twenty
four Midwest Modifieds took the green flag for their main
event with Dan Svee taking the lead from the pole position. He
didn’t hold the point for long though, as Mickey Nosser moved
to the high side and slipped past Svee as they raced out of
turn four. Once in front, Nosser was able to open up several
cars lengths on the field with plenty of action behind him
though. Bryce Johnson and Travis Krause fought for position
and they were soon joined by Marshall and Brady Peterson in
the race for position. Kevin Adams and Dan Wheeler were also
on the move.
Marshall used the high
side to take over the second spot but he was still several car
lengths behind Nosser. Peterson worked into the third spot but
when he slipped high in turn one, Adams drove under him to
take over third. Nosser continued to hold the lead for several
laps as Marshall and Adams tried to track him down to no
avail. Suddenly things changed when Nosser suddenly slowed
down the back chute and headed for the infield.
Marshall inherited the
lead with only a few laps remaining, and while Adams was able
to close up, he could never mount a serious challenge as
Marshall drove home for his first win at EVS. Behind Adams,
the rookie Peterson had a strong run for third with Ryan Olson
and Wheeler next in line.
Topping the Midwest
Modified surprise finish was the Super Stocks where the issue
wasn’t settled until the final corner. Steve Hallquist started
on the pole, fought off an early challenge from Jason Forehand
and then established a solid lead in the event. There was a
good battle for second as Paul Erikson, Cory Karshbaum and
Mike Keller battled for the position with Dave Mass, Steve
Thomas and Cory Mahder close behind.
Erikson held the
position for several laps as other drivers took turns
challenging him, but Mass and Keller eventually became the
most serious contenders for the position. Mass was working the
high side, and he was able to drive into second with Keller
instead using the low side of the track.
Keller then picked up
the pace and was able to drive under Mass to take over second.
However, both were several car lengths back of Hallquist who
seemed to have a comfortable lead as he worked the cushion.
The final lap began with Hallquist seemingly in control when
he suddenly seemed to slow down the back chute with the car
wiggling around from side to side. As he entered turn three
the car shot up the track and slowed dramatically with the
left rear tire flat. Keller dove to the inside and drove
across the line as the surprise winner of his second victory
of the year at EVS. Mass finished second with the hard luck
Hallquist robbed of his first victory of the year. Mahder
raced home fourth ahead of Jesse Redetzke.
All eyes have been on
Craig Thatcher lately in the Modifieds but his winning streak
was broken tonight by Todd Siddons who took his second win of
the year at The Valley. Kevin Rogers took the initial lead
from the outside pole and held off Mike Anderson for a couple
of laps before Anderson was able to take over the lead.
Meanwhile, Siddons and Thatcher were marching through the pack
from their fourth row starting positions.
Siddons was able to
shoot up to the second spot with Thatcher next in line when
Craig suddenly slowed on the back chute and pulled into the
infield, his race at an end.
Siddons turned up the
pressure as he closed on Anderson and with a hard drive low,
was able to squeeze under Anderson to take over the lead. Once
in front , Siddons checked out on the field as he built up
nearly a straightaway advantage until a late yellow bunched
the field.
On the green, Siddons
again pulled away but there was a good three car battle for
second. Anderson was closely trailed by A.J. Heuer while Scott
Duval went to the cushion. Working hard off the banking , he
was able to pass Heuer and just came up short of Anderson at
the finish with Luke Schilling also in the top five.
The Late Model feature
was a nonstop event and was decided on the first lap of the
race. Hensel held the pole position and he jumped into the
lead right at the green. Duane Mahder was able to squeeze past
Mike Goodremote for second right at the start and that’s the
way they ran for twenty laps. Hensel pulled to an eight car
length lead , which he maintained throughout the event as
Mahder stayed about the same distance behind the rest of the
race. Goodremote rode third all the way with the closest
battle for fourth with Jake Redetzke and Chad Mahder fighting
for that position. Redetzke prevailed for that position and
when Mahder was disqualified in post race inspection, Rick
Hanestad was elevated to fifth in the final order. It was
Hensel’s third win of the year here, making him the only
repeat winner in the division.
Cory Crapser scored a
come from behind win for the second straight night in the
Street Stock division. Clark Swartz took the early lead with
pressure from Jay Kesan and Mike Conrad. Crapser started
eighth but quickly worked his way into a challenging position.
Swartz held the lead for several laps until he drifted up the
track and Conrad was there to take over the point.
There was some hard
racing among contenders Kesan, Darrel Hazelton and Crapser for
second with Crapser eventually positioning himself behind
Conrad. With five laps to go, the yellow flew when Swartz
stalled in turn one. A single file restart saw the top four
nose to tail and taking turns polished their front bumpers on
the competition. Conrad continued to maintain the lead but
Crapser was putting heavy pressure on him. With two to go,
Conrad slipped high for just a second leaving turn four and
Crapser was right there to slip under him and take the lead.
That’s the way they finished with Kesan edging Hazelton for
fourth and Troy Fransway rounding out the top five. It was
Crapser’s four win of the season at Eagle Valley.
Lindner took his fifth
Pure Stock win of the season, tops in the division, but it was
a struggle as he had to come from the eleventh starting spot
to claim the victory. Greg Gunderson took the early lead and
held on for many laps despite pressure from several different
drivers. Jeremy Robinson and Jason Lang were the early
challengers with Mike Knudtson eventually working his way into
second and challenging.
Meanwhile, Lindner had
worked his way up into third and was running close behind.
Knudtson put the horn on Gunderson and Greg slid high in turn
four and Knudtson was able to take over the lead. However, he
wasn’t able to celebrate long as he slid up the track in turn
one and Lindner drove under him to take over the point.
Once in front, Lindner
stretched his advantage and continued to pull away to the
checkered. Knudtson and Gunderson held on to their spots with
Robinson and Tommy Richards rounding out the top five.
Racing will resume next
Sunday, July 30th , on Rod’s Painting &
Sandblasting Inc. and Car Quest night at the speedway. All six
classes will be in action with the first race to go under the
green at 6 p.m.
