Only three races remain on the schedule for the Eagle Valley Speedway this year including the fifth annual Lonnie Leu Memorial on Sunday, September 3rd .

The Late Model feature saw three different leaders before the issue was settled with the rookie Redetzke taking command in the later half of the event to pull away from the field. Duane Mahder held the pole position and while he took the initial lead, he was quickly challenged by Rick Hanestad who moved to the cushion of the track and pulled up beside Mahder. They battled wheel to wheel before Hanestad got a good run off turn two and moved into the lead. However, his time at the point of the field was very short as no more had he taken the lead when he suddenly lost power down the back chute and rolled to a halt in turn three. He took a push back to the pit area and his evening was done.

Mahder found himself back in front but he was soon challenged by Redetzke who drove to the low side of the track and pulled inside Duane. Jake was able to edge into the lead and while Mahder tried to stay with him on the high side, Redetzke gradually began to pull away as the race remained under the green.

As Redetzke pulled away, Duane Mahder was soon challenged by his son Chad for second. Chad was quicker off the corners and while Duane tried both high and low, he couldn’t stay with Chad who also passed him. Redetzke continued to motor away from the field for an easy win as he took his second victory of the season at Eagle Valley. Chad Mahder finished second while Duane slowed markedly near the end and dropped out on the final lap giving the third spot to Tom Nesbitt who was trailed by Gary Baxter and Bryan Hessler.

Craig Thatcher started on the pole and drove to an easy win in the Modified main event. The race got off to a slow start with three yellow flags in the early going but once all out racing took place, Thatcher quickly pulled away from Kevin Adams to establish the lead. Adams found Todd Siddons challenging him on the low side and Siddons was able to drive into the runner up slot. He then tried to stay with Thatcher but had little success doing that as Thatcher steadily pulled away from the field. After Adams had mechanical problems and dropped out, Kent Baxter moved into the third spot.

Thatcher’s lead grew to be nearly a straightaway as he cruised home for his eighth win of the year at EVS. Siddons finished second with Baxter third. Shawn Peterson drove up into the fourth spot in the final order with Troy Giralamo elevated to fifth in the final running order after Jay Richardson was disqualified for failing to present his car in the tech area.

There was nearly an upset in the Super Stock main event before Curt Myers assumed control late in the contest which was shortened due to time limits after there were multiple crashes in the later stages of the event.

The race started out tight as pole sitter Cory Mahder was soon challenged by both Myers and Bryan Nayes. They raced three wide down the front chute before Nayes used the high side to take over the lead. Myers then worked under Mahder for second as both tried to catch the flying Nayes. Bryan, who was debuting a new car, was extremely quick as he put some distance on his competition.

The first yellow flew with eight laps complete and then things started to unravel from that point on. Nayes got the jump on the green , but Mahder used the outside line from the second row to get up on the cushion and he drove past both Myers and Nayes to take over the lead. Shortly, the lead group was joined by Jesse Redetzke who was on the move. However, he and Nayes tangled while battling for position and Nayes went around and the yellow flew again. Nayes was restored to his position and the race resumed with Mahder continuing to lead while Nayes and Myers battled for second.

Things changed again drastically just two laps later when the leader Mahder spun all by himself in turn four while in heavy traffic. He has tagged very hard by Rod Dregney and Steve Thomas and all three cars were eliminated with heavy damage.

Myers now took the lead with Nayes continuing to chase him while Steve Hallquist continued his charge from the fifth row as he drove under Mike Keller to take over third. Two more yellows for minor incidents caused the race to be shortened and on the final two lap sprint to the checkered, Myers pulled away from the field for his fifth win of the year here. Nayes maintained the second spot over Hallquist with Keller and Mark Stender trailing.

Adams made up for his Modified disappointment somewhat by running away from the pack for the Midwest Modified title. Adams and Shane Halopka shared the front row with Adams taking the initial lead while Halopka settled in behind him. Shane wasn’t going to be around long though, as he quickly developed a flat tire and headed for the pits to end his evening. Ryan Olson inherited second after Halopka’s misfortune but he wasn’t able to stay with Adams on this night.

As the race stayed under the green, Adams continued to stretch his advantage until it grew to be a straightaway on the field. He eased across the line for his fifth win here this season. Olson maintained second while Bryce Johnson had a strong run for third with Justin Supri trailing. The hard charger was rookie Brady Peterson who drove up from twelfth to round out the top five.

Cory Crapser completed a successful week of racing when he took his fifth feature win of the year here and a Season Championship in the Street Stocks. The Streets had a tough time getting going tonight with two yellows before the first lap could be completed. Crapser himself caught a huge break when he spun in turn four on the initial start while leading but he was able to keep going and when another competitor hit the wall, that caused the yellow light to come on and the race to be completely restarted with Crapser given the pole back.

When racing finally got going , Crapser used the outside to get the jump on Mike Conrad and take the early lead. Keith Tourville quickly moved in on Crapser and gave him a serious challenge for the lead. Several times Tourville was able to get to the outside of Crapser but he couldn’t quite pull off the pass and Crapser was able to maintain the lead.

Two more yellows for spins slowed the field and it seemed like Tourville lost his edge after the many slowdowns as Crapser was able to put some distance on him on the final green.

Cory gradually pulled away as the top three that included Tourville and Troy Fransway gradually got spread out with distance between each of them. The last few laps proved uneventful and the top three completed their run in that order. Jimmy Randall made a late charge to get the fourth spot with Steve Golat completing the top five.

The Pure Stock feature started out with a bang with a wild scramble on the opening lap that saw the pole sitter end up on his roof. Apparently set to do combat from the first green flag, front row starters Mike Knudtson and Danny Richards were banging on each other almost from the second the green flag dropped. They managed to push and beat on each other through the first and second turns where they were joined by Danny Richards. Danny made contact with the left rear quarter of Knudtson’s car , sending him sliding into the infield where he dug into the dirt and rolled over.

Knudtson was unhurt in the mishap and order was soon established as all three drivers were disqualified immediately and sent to the pits. The restart found Carolyn Nosser and Austin Schultz on the front row and they battled side by side for a couple laps before Schultz was able to get past Nosser and pull into the lead.

After the first lap fireworks, everything seemed to settle in nicely as the rest of the race ran nonstop with Schultz gradually pulling away from the field for his first win of the year driving his current car although he scored a win earlier in a different vehicle. Nosser ran a solid second throughout the contest as there was a good battle behind her for position. Justin Lindner came through to take third but the apparent fourth place car of Jason Lang was disqualified in post race inspection. That moved Scott Anderson into fourth with Wade Aspen rounding out the top five.

Sunday, September 3rd , the Eagle Valley Speedway will present the fifth annual Lonnie Leu Memorial Race. This race is run in memory of the former Super Stock Champion who was killed in a snowmobile accident. An enhanced purse will be provided for the Super Stocks while the other five classes will run for the regular EVS purse. Draw cutoff will be 5:30 p.m. with the first race set to go at 6 p.m.
