Anvelink’s Late Pass Nets Eagle Valley Win
By Ed Reichert

September 8, 2006 - Jim Falls WI –  When Nick Anvelink starts on the pole for a Late Model feature, it’s not surprising that he should bring home the first place check. But the manner in which he did it tonight made for a thrilling race event and the highlight of the opening night of the second annual Jim-Town Showdown at the Eagle Valley Speedway. Other winners tonight on the Friday night opener of the two day show included Craig Thatcher, Steve Thomas, Jared Loos, Cory Crapser and Austin Schultz.

With Anvelink on the pole for the Late Model finale, it was expected that he would jump into the early lead but instead, it was veteran Tom Nesbitt who got the bite on the higher side of the track to shoot into the lead. Nesbitt looked strong as he opened up a few car lengths on the field with John Kaanta then making the move. He got past Anvelink and then closed on Nesbitt. The two raced side by side for a lap before Kaanta would edge into the lead.

As Kaanta opened a few car lengths on Nesbitt, Adam Hensel then became the charger. He had been racing with A.J. Diemel for fourth when he opted to move even higher up the track and he was rewarded with immediate success. He then proceeded to drive away from Diemel, pass Anvelink and Nesbitt in short order and close up on Kaanta. As Kaanta continued to ride the high side of the black, Hensel pulled up beside him even higher on the track. They raced side by side with Hensel edging ahead, only to see Adam get over the cushion in turn four and drop back behind Kaanta. Hensel pushed hard and nearly got up beside Kaanta again, but John was able to hold him off.

Just when it seemed that things had settled down, third place Anvelink dropped a little lower on the track and found some tack, and he took off as if he had shifted gears. He went storming by Hensel to take over second and quickly closed up on Kaanta. With John still running on the high side of the black, Anvelink drove under Kaanta in a race for the lead. Kaanta tried to fight him off but with just under two laps to go, Anvelink blew by Kaanta and took over the lead. Nick opened up a three car length lead on the final circuit to take the exciting win. Hensel hung on for third over Diemel with Nesbitt rounding out the top five.

Thatcher put a pasting on the Modified field as he came from the ninth starting spot to drive to the front quickly and then disappear into the evening as no one could even stay close to the flying #91. Ron Mahder and Scott Duval battled for the lead at the drop of the green, with Mahder eventually edging past Duvy to take over the top spot. Todd Siddons moved into third with Kevin Adams and Kent Baxter close behind. The leaders were lined up in single file order on the bottom lane, but after Thatcher edged under a couple of cars to gain position, he looked over the long inside lane of cars and decided that the outside was the short way to the front.

He went storming past the entire column of cars as if they were in the construction lane with a stop sign ahead of them. He drove right up beside Mahder, who offered a small challenge which required Thatcher to race him wheel to wheel for a lap before Thatcher drove harder into turn one and took over the lead.

After that, the race was history as Thatcher continued to extend his advantage until it was almost an entire straightaway. Lapped traffic proved only a minor inconvenience as he motored home for yet another EVS win. Mahder had a good run for second and held off a last lap charge by Siddons, with Duval and Adams rounding out the top five.

The Super Stock feature was the only main event to have much in the way of crashes and slowdowns, with the yellow bunting waving five times before its conclusion. Mark Stender jumped into the early lead and led a good majority of the event. He was challenged early by Jesse Redetzke who looked ready to take over the lead, only to slide high and drop back behind Steve Hallquist and Thomas. Redetzke then tried to charge back into the lead but mechanical problems ended his night and brought out one of the yellows.

Stender continued to lead but Thomas got under Hallquist for second and began to apply the pressure. Meanwhile, Wayne Harris Jr. was having a nice run as he moved into the top five. Thomas got to the inside of Stender to take over the lead but a yellow flag wiped out the move and Stender regained the point. Harris Jr. moved in to challenge Hallquist for third and they got together in turn three with Harris Jr spinning. Hallquist retired to the pit area and Harris Jr. was restored to third.

The six lap dash to the checkered saw Thomas again able to get to the inside of Stender and this time he was able to take over the lead. Stender was able to stay close but offered no serious challenges. Harris Jr. hung on for third and on the last corner, Kori Richter, who started thirteenth, dove under Jay Kintner to take the fourth spot.

Jared Loos won his first Midwest Modified main event of the season as he held off a last lap challenge from Kevin Adams for the win in a rare, nonstop run for the Midwest Mods. Matt Steffen started on the pole but rookie Zack Drews came flying up under both Loos and Steffen to take the early lead. Drews was flying as he put a few car lengths on Loos who had taken over the second spot. Meanwhile, Ryan Olson, Mark Hanson and Jeff Brauer were battling for position behind the lead group as Kevin Adams and Shane Halopka worked their way up after being mired far back in the starting order.

Drews continued to set a blistering pace and Loos and Olson were struggling to stay with him. Adams had moved to the high side and picked off several cars and he worked into the fourth spot. Kevin continued to move as he got under Olson for third and set his guns on the top two.

Drews faltered in turn four when he got sideways and Loos was able to get beside him. They raced briefly before Loos was able to move under Drews and take over the lead. Adams then closed on Drews and was able to take the second spot. Kevin started to move in on Jared, but Loos was running well and while Adams could get close, he wasn’t able to make a strong move.

On the final lap the leaders split a lapped car and Loos lost time as he tried to get to the high side of the back marker. Adams dove low and they raced three wide into turn three. Loos was able to drive deeper in the corner and use the banking to keep his momentum up, and he held off Adams by about a car length at the line. Olson finished third ahead of Hanson and Drews.

Cory Crapser made a strong move early that allowed him to take the Street Stock win. Darrel Hazelton took the early lead from the pole with Crapser quickly moving from fifth into second. He closed up on Hazelton and looked to the low side of Darrel. Cory got under Hazelton and took over the lead. Once in front, he started to stretch his advantage as the race stayed under the green.

Back in the pack, Jay Kesan was making a determined move to the front. From the fourth row, he moved to the upper groove and was able to drive by Matt Wolfe, Danny Hanson and finally, Hazelton to take over second. He began to reel in Crapser who was running all by himself and using the lower line of the track.

Kesan made up considerable distance in the waning laps, but Crapser’s lead was too big as he hung on for the win. Mike Conrad moved up near the end to take third with Hanson and Wolfe trailing.

Austin Schultz led all the way in the nonstop Pure Stock main to conclude the evening. He gained a big early lead and was never challenged hard for the top spot. Mike Knudtson moved into second early and ran in that position for most of the race. He was challenged in the late going by Danny Richards but held him off for runner up honors. Tommy Richards and Wade Aspen completed the top five.
