Bahr Sizzles At Eagle Valley
By Ed Reichert

May 21, 2006 - Jim Falls WI – Tony Bahr picked a good night to record his first victory of the season at the Eagle Valley Speedway Sunday. White City Glass was the event sponsor for tonight’s racing program and the White City Glass owned and sponsored car carried Bahr to an over powering win in the Late Model feature tonight. With the win, Bahr remained red hot in weekend racing action as his win was the third of the weekend, a rarity to accomplish with today’s well balanced fields of cars. Other winners in racing action tonight included Kevin Adams, Mark Stender, Ryan Olson, Ron Hanestad and Austin Schultz.

Austin Schultz was the man to catch in the Pure Stock division, taking home a win in the evening's feature contest.

Bahr started on the pole for the Late Model headliner and after getting the jump on Tom Nesbitt , he quickly pulled away from the field in the nonstop main event. As Bahr opened up a big lead, the battle was for second as Nesbitt raced hard to hold off Rick Hanestad. Hanestad had successfully fought off John Kaanta and then moved in to race the Canadian veteran. After racing hard, Hanestad was able to get under Nesbitt and take the second spot after which he tried to chase down Bahr.

Late in the contest, A.J. Diemel began to make a move after starting tenth. He drove by Kaanta and then Nesbitt and was closing in on Hanestad. Bahr raced home unchallenged for the win while Hanestad was able to hold off Diemel for runner up honors. Nesbitt and Kaanta rounded out the top five.

Kevin Adams continued what has been a good weekend for him as he won his first Modified feature of the year at Eagle Valley and his second straight of the weekend. Adams’ win was nearly as dominating as Bahrs’ as he started on the pole and checked out on the field. As Adams pulled away from the pack, the battle was for second as Tyler Keyser, Todd Siddons and Eric Scribner raced for the position. Schribner was very impressive as in his first time ever at EVS, he moved strongly to the front. Craig Thatcher made his usual strong run as he worked his way up after starting tenth on the grid. He dropped to the low side and raced Scribner for the runner up slot. Once he had cleared Scribner , he moved back to the top and the contest was on to see if he could flag down the high flying Adams.

However, it was not to be as Thatcher suffered a suspension failure on the left front of his car and he was fighting just to maintain his position, much less advance it. As Scribner remained in the high groove behind Thatcher, Siddons came storming up on the low side and took over second. However, he was nearly a straightaway behind Adams who rolled home for the impressive win. Thatcher managed to hold off Scribner for third with Dave Cain coming from fourteenth to round out the top five.

Eric Olson got the jump on the Super Stock field but the first start was waved off due to a spin and on the second attempt, it was Steve Hallquist who took the lead. Hallquist was closely followed by Aaron Wilson and Olson with Mark Stender also on the move. Hallquist’s evening suddenly came to a halt as he pulled into the infield with motor problems. Wilson took the lead briefly but Stender went to the cushion and blew past, taking over the lead.

Wilson and Olson raced to try and stay with Stender, but Mark had the cushion figured out tonight. Cory Mahder worked the low side as he raced into fourth and attempted to chase down the top three with Mike Keller also in the mix.

Wilson continued to chase Stender, hoping for a mistake but Stender continued to run the high side flawlessly. Rich Bishop was on the move as he started fifteenth but was advancing at a rapid pace. He drove past Mahder and closed on Olson. No one had anything for Stender as he drove on for the win, with the top five remaining unchanged the last few laps, despite them running in tight formation.

Ryan Olson was another first time winner tonight as his new car carried him to victory in the Midwest Modified event that was shortened to twelve laps due to time restraints caused by six yellow flags.

Mike Knopps was the early leader with Brandon Bowe, Olson, Jim Poyda and Karl Knopps close behind. Mike Knopps chances for victory went by the way side when he spun in turn three and that turned over the lead to Olson. Justin Supri then became the most serious challenger and he closely tailed Olson. Kevin Adams was also on the move after starting ninth and he battled hard with Mickey Nosser and Bowe for position.

Olson remained strong on the bottom line as he drove on for the win with Adams securing third on the final lap. Bowe ran a strong race to finish fourth ahead of Nosser.

The Street Stocks put on another high contested event that saw Ron Hanestad ride the high side most of the contest before he dropped to the low groove late in the race to get the win. Cory Crapser and Travis Hazelton battled in the early going for the lead with Crapser able to edge in front. Hazelton remained close to battle while Hanestad went to the high side and he was able to drive by both cars to take over the lead.

A series of yellows kept the field bunched but each time Hanestad was able to hold off Crapser. Behind them a great battle raged as Mike Conrad, Ajay Christianson, Troy Fransway, Jimmy Randall and Steve Golat battled for position. This group never did get separated and they raced as a pack right to the finish.

Christianson used the high side to move into third and when Crapser slowed with motor problems, Ajay took over the second place. Hanestad remained in control as he drove to the win while a pack of five raced to the finish line with Conrad holding on for third ahead of Hazelton and Randall.

Ralph Schultz took the early lead in the Pure Stock feature with Greg Gunderson chasing him. Mike Harshman, Mike Knudtson and Shawn Mahder moved into the lead pack while Austin Schultz and Justin Lindner worked their way up from deep in the field.

Ralph Schultz’s car started smoking badly and the pack caught him. His car expired in the first turn bringing out the yellow and giving Gunderson the lead. Austin Schultz was on the move and he closed in to challenge Gunderson and his father’s bad luck ended his evening. Knudtson and Lindner were racing hard for position when they got together with Knudtson spinning and Lindner being sent to the tail for the restart.

Austin Schultz jumped to the outside on the green and he drove around Gunderson to take over the lead. During the last few laps he extended his advantage while Knudtson made a charge on the outside to drive around Gunderson for second. Tony Luell gradually worked his way up after starting twelfth and he took fourth late in the race and held off Mahder for that position.

A great field of one hundred fourty two cars signed in for racing action tonight and next week’s field is expected to be just as strong. The next racing action at the Eagle Valley Speedway will be the Memorial Day special slated for Monday night, May 29th . EVS will be off on Sunday, but the holiday weekend will be wrapped up with racing on Memorial Day. Racing action will begin promptly at 6 p.m. so that spectators can get home early and get ready for work or school on Tuesday.
