Butler Takes First Winged Super Mod Victory of 1997!!

By Jeff Pederson

July 12, 1997, Plymouth, WI.

Randy Butler of Juneau rolled to his first feature victory of the 1997 season in convincing flag-to-flag fashion during the 30 lap Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Winged Super Modified main event at the Sheboygan County Fair Park on Saturday Night.

Randy Butler led the Winged Super Modified feature event from the opening lap to the checkered and won in convincing fashion.

The victory was his first feature win of the season and fourth of his career. Butler is now a close second in season points to Pete Ostrowski who is the defending champion and current point leader.

Butler, who started on the pole, out powered fellow front row starter Billy Kreutz of Kiel to assume the lead in the first corner of the opening lap. The 11th year Winged Super Modified driver the proceeded to build up a 10 car length cushion over Kreutz in the early stages of the race.

On lap 15, Butler started to work his way through a large pack of slower cars. As Butler maneuvered through the tail end of the field, Kreutz began to reel in the leader. Third place runner Paul Pokorski of West Bend also began to close in on the leaders.

Butler was able to extend his lead during the second half of the race as Kreutz, Pokorski and seventh place starter Ken Jay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls became locked in a heated battle for the runner-up spot.

The former Sprint Car competitor cruised over the final 10 laps to notch his fourth career EWSC Winged Super Modified feature victory by a full-straightaway margin in the non-stop event.

Kreutz held on to finish second, Fiedler pass Pokorski on the final lap to take third, Pokorski fell back to fourth and outside third row starter Greg Otte of Sheboygan Falls placed fifth.

Limited Late Model feature winner Roy Dahmer is joined in victory lane by Haley Ditter the Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car trophy queen. The win was Dahmer's second of the season, for the season year Limited Late Model driver.

Roy Dahmer of Sheboygan fended off a late race charge from West Bend's Jeff Fechter on his way to his second 25 lap Limited Late Model feature victory of the year.

Polesitter Scott Haugstad of Plymouth jumped into the lead on the drop of the green flag. On the next circuit, the second starting Dahmer took over the top spot from Haugstad.

Dahmer then raced out to a quarter-straightaway advantage by the 10th lap of the event. The second year Limited Late Model driver maintained a solid lead over Haugstad before Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah spun out along the frontstretch to bring out the lone red flag of the race on lap 19.

He's been a master at time trials this season! Randy Harshbarger, has been the man to beat in qualifying. The Campbellsport, WI native missed the first few nights of racing but has now climbed into the top 10 in points!

Following the restart, the fourth starting Fechter worked his way around Haugstad and quickly set his sights on the leader. Fechter moved in to pressure Dahmer for the top spot beginning on lap 21, but his efforts to execute a winning pass fell short during the final four laps.

Dahmer went on to post his third career EWSC Limited Late Model feature win by two car lengths over runner-up Fechter.

Haugstad was third, Plymouth's Dan Dippel came up from the 12th starting spot to finish fourth and defending Limited Late Model champion Steve Hoffmann charged from the eighth row to place fifth.

Sheboygan's Mike Anderson picked up his second 20 lap feature victory of the season in the Super Stock division. Anderson led the first lap of the race from his pole position. On lap seven, the fourth place starter Chad Schlenvogt of Port Washington closed up to the rear bumper of Anderson's car.

Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car photographer Dave Drews caught Dave Horneck (#66) mid-roll, after he made contact with Doug Teunissen (#48) on the backstretch. Neither driver was hurt in the incident.

The only red flag flew on lap 11 when Oostburg's Doug Teunissen and Dave Horneck of Greenleaf made contact on the backstretch. The collision sent Horneck's car rolling onto it's roof.

When the race resumed, Anderson began to feel the pressure from outside fourth row starter Brian Kessler of Plymouth on lap 15. Kessler challenged the leader repeatedly over the final five laps, but Anderson held on to earn his fourth career Super Stock feature win.

The first repeat winner in the Super Stock division! Mike Anderson has been the only driver this season to win more than a single Super Stock feature when he earned his second win of the year Saturday Night. Competition in the class has never been closer than this season.

With the victory Anderson became the first repeat feature winner in the Super Stock division this season.

Kessler had to settle for second, third row starter Brian Genske of Sheboygan finished third, Schlenvogt was fourth and Oostburg's Jim Bailey placed fifth.

Kevin Schnell of Kiel won the 15 lap Winged Super Modified B-Semi-Feature and Waldo's Lee Mohs captured the 8 lap Winged Super Modified C-Semi-Feature. Dick Hed of Plymouth was victorious in the 15 lap Limited Late Model semi-feature. Sheboygan's Matt Jackson collected the victory in the 15 lap Super Stock semi-feature.

Pete Ostrowski carries the American Flag after posting fast time in the Winged Super Modified division. You can call him, point leader, defending champion, fast qualifier, feature winner.... they all apply this season, and he appears to be the man to beat for the season title.
