The accident forced Randy Butler of Juneau, Dave Enders of Kiel and Jim DePagter of Sheboygan Falls to drop out of the race.
On the restart, third starter Ken Jay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls used the outside groove to power around Schueffner exiting turn four. However, Schueffner returned the favor one lap later as he battled back along the low line to retake the lead in the fourth corner of the third-mile clay oval.
Schueffner maintained the top spot during the middle stages of the race until lap 20 when the rim riding Fiedler moved in to mount another challenge for the lead. Following a heated five lap side-by-side battle, Fiedler finally powered pas Schueffner to assume the lead exiting turn four on lap 25.

"I am really happy to get this victory," Kreutz said. "After that big accident in the early going, I knew that not too many of the guys would try to run the top right away. I decided to stay on the bottom and wait for and opening. The I saw Fiedler go up high and pass Schueffner for the lead near the end and I just followed him. I figured I would either win the race or finish third and luckily things worked out for us. Our team had a rough start to the year, but we've been having a lot of fun lately."
Schueffner wound up second, Fiedler fell back to third on the final lap, outside front row starter Kevin Schnell of Kiel took fourth and Chuck Melis of Plymouth moved up from the fourth row to place fifth.
