Super Mod feature win!!

By Jeff Pederson

August 16, Plymouth, WI. -Second year driver Steve Bricker of Two Rivers edged out two-time track champion Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee by less than half a car length to collect his first career 30 lap Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Winged Super Modified feature victory at Sheboygan County Fair Park on Saturday night.

Bricker, who started on the pole, led the opening two laps of the race before current point leader Ken Jay Fiedler of Sheboygan Falls rode the high groove from his inside second row starting position to pressure the leader beginning on lap three.

The lone red flag of the race appeared on lap four, when nine time Limited Late Model champion Gary Laack of Glenbeulah spun in turn two. Following the restart, Fiedler bolted around Bricker along the high line to take over the top spot in turn two on lap five.

Steve Bricker won his first career EWSC Winged Super Modified Feature event, for car owner Neil Rand. Neil is the father of the late Pat Rand who died at the track in 1994. The win for Bricker was extremely popular!

Three laps later, Bricker battled back using the inside groove while Ostrowski charged up from his inside fifth row starting spot to join in a spirited three way duel for the lead. On lap 13, Bricker slipped underneath Fiedler, who was starting to slow along the outside groove.

The rim riding Ostrowski then began to mount his challenge for the lead on lap 22. Three laps later, Ostrowski darted past Bricker to become the third different leader of the hotly contested event.

The battle!! Ken Jay Fiedler (#95) uses the outside to try and hold back Pete Ostrowski (#7) and eventual winner Steve Bricker #33). Bricker managed to pass his rivals for his first career Winged Super Modified feature.

Bricker then fought his way back into contention in the closing stages of the race as the two front runners waged a tight side-by-side battle during the next two circuits. On lap 27, Bricker finally surged ahead of Ostrowski and held on down the stretch to earn his initial EWSC Winged Super Modified victory by less than one car length.

Bricker's victory came in a car formerly driven by the late Pat Rand of Mishicot, who was killed in a racing accident at Sheboygan County Fair Park on July 9, 1994. The race also marked the first EWSC Winged Super Modified feature victory for the Rand family team which is owned by Pat's father Neil.

Ostrowski had to settle for second, second started Chuck Melis of Plymouth finished third, Fiedler fell back to fourth and fast qualifier Eddie Staehler of Kewaskum came from the 11th starting spot to place fifth.

Defending Limited Late Model champion Steve Hoffmann, posted his first feature win of the 1997 season. Hoffmann has used consistent performances to lead the point chase in the division. Hoffmann has also won several features this season at Shawano Speedway.

Defending track champion and current point leader Steve Hoffmann of Plymouth posted his first feature victory on the season in wire to wire fashion during the 25 lap Limited Late Model main event.

Hoffmann jumped into the lead on the drop of the green flag from the pole position. By lap ten, the 16 year Limited Late Model veteran had built up a full-straightaway advantage over outside second row started Howie Weiss of Glenbeulah.

Hoffmann began to work his way thought the tail end of the field on lap 15, while sixth starter Dick Hed of Plymouth slipped past Weiss to assume the runner-up spot. The current Limited Late Model point leader maintained a solid cushion over the final 10 laps on the way to a full-straightaway margin of victory over second place Hed in the non-stop race.

Weiss finished third, outside front row starter Steve Zieglebauer of Sheboygan was fourth and Plymouth's Dan Dippel finished fifth after starting eighth.

Two types of celebrations!! In the left photo, Tom and Judy Johnson spent the afternoon before the evenings races getting married. The Johnson's tied the knot in the log chapel on the fairgrounds. Up above, Tim Thompson found victory land for the third time in the Super Stock feature event.

Super Stock point leader Tim Thompson of Campbellsport picked up his third victory of the year in the 20 lap feature race.

Polesitter Jeff Muehlbauer of Elkhart Lake grabbed the lead on the drop of the green flag. On lap three, Thompson moved in from

the third starting spot to take over the top position in turn two.

The only red flag of the event appeared on lap four for a spin involving Kiel's Dean Gosse. When the race resumed, Thompson powered out to a solid advantage over the rest of the field.

Thompson fended off a late race charge from second row starter J.J. Walvoord of Oostburg to post his fourth career Super Stock feature triumph.

Walvoord finished second, Muehlbauer was third, Kevin Kenealy of Hebertus came up from the fifth row to place fourth and Greenleaf's Dave Horneck rounded out the top five.

Gary Laack won the 15 lap Winged Super Modified "B" Semi-feature. Scott Haugstad of Plymouth was victorious in the 15 lap Limited Late Model semi-feature and Plymouth's Brian Kessler captured the 15 lap Super Stock semi-feature.

The Bud Girls were on hand, as the evenings events were sponsored by Budweiser.
