LeRoy Ostrowski takes Labor Day afternoon Fair Special

By Jeff Pederson

September 1, 1997; Plymouth, WI. - LeRoy Ostrowski of Milwaukee collected his first feature victory since the 1995 season, in the annual Labor Day 30 lap Winged Super Modified feature held on a sunny Monday afternoon at the Sheboygan County Fair Park.

LeRoy Ostrowski of Milwaukee, found victory lane on a warm sunny Labor Day afternoon, as Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car held it's annual Labor Day Fair program.

LeRoy is the brother of current Winged Super Modified point leader Pete Ostrowski. On this day LeRoy used the low groove around the slick track to earn his first feature win since 1995.

After an aborted start for an incident in turn two involving Eddie Staehler of Kewaskum and Grafton's Dennis Klumb, the inside front row starting Ostrowski battled side-by-side with fellow front row starter Dave Enders of Kiel during the opening two circuits of the race.

On lap three, Ostrowski finally surged ahead of Enders to take control of the top spot. The second red flag period of the event flew on lap six, for debris in turn one. After the restart, Ostrowski began to pull out to a quarter-straightaway edge over fifth starter Danny Cain of Kewaskum by the halfway point of the event.

Sunny skies and Winged Super Mods! The Eastern Wisconsin Stock Car Labor Day program was held in the afternoon. It was the first "day show" in recent memory for the club.

Here, LeRoy Ostrowski (#29) holds back the challenges of Dave Enders (#51) early in the main event.

The 13th year competitor continued to hold down the top spot until lap 26 when Enders spun in turn three to bring out the third and final red flag of the race. When the race resumed, Ostrowski successfully fended off Cain's challenges over the final four laps to capture his second career EWSC Winged Super Modified feature win, by a five car length margin.

Cain was second, two-time track champion and current point leader Pete Ostrowski of Milwaukee finished third after starting fourth, Plymouth's Chuck Melis came from the 14th starting spot to place fourth and inside second row starter Tim McMullen of Plymouth took fifth.

Gary Nelson of Shawano made his first ever visit to the Plymouth track pay off in a big way as he posted his first career EWSC 25 lap Limited Late Model feature triumph.

The visitor found victory lane. Gary Nelson of Shawano, who regularly competes at his hometown track Shawano Speedway, made the trip to the Sheboygan County Fair Grounds payoff when he claimed victory in the Limited Late Model feature.

The Shawano Speedway sportsman cars and the EWSC Limited Late Models are similar, and on occasion the drivers travel to each others track.

Steve Ziegelbauer of Sheboygan charged into the lead on the drop of the green flag from his pole position. Over the next 13 laps, Ziegelbauer proceeded to open up a quarter-straightaway advantage over the outside front row starting Nelson, who is a regular competitor at Shawano Speedway's half-mile clay oval.

The lone red flag of the event appeared on lap 14 for debris on the track in turn three. Following the restart, Nelson moved in to pressure Ziegelbauer along the low groove. On lap 15, Nelson slipped underneath Ziegelbauer to take command of the top position entering turn one.

Nelson continued to maintain the lead during the final 10 laps as fourth starter Scott Haugstad of Plymouth and Shawano Speedway regular Bud Lynn of White Lake, who started 14th, mounted a spirited duel for second place during the closing stages of the race.

Nelson held on down the stretch to earn his initial EWSC Limited Late Model triumph. Lynn edged out Haugstad to place second by less than a nose piece, Haugstad was third, defending track champion and current point leader Steve Hoffmann charged from the 18th starting spot to finish fourth and Ziegelbauer wound up fifth.

J.J. Walvoord of Oostburg picked up his first feature victory of the 1997 season in the 20 lap Super Stock main event.

J. J. Walvoord of Oostburg, took home top honors in the Super Stock division to earn his first feature victory of the 1997 racing season.

Polesitter Matt Jackson of Sheboygan paced the field during the opening two laps before Walvoord, who started second, powered around Jackson to assume the lead in turn two on lap 3.

Walvoord continued to stretch his advantage during the remaining 17 laps on his way to his second career Super Stock feature victory in the non-stop race. Jackson was second, Brian Gilles of Elkhart Lake moved up from the 10th starting spot to place third, second row starter Dave Theobald of Sheboygan Falls finished fourth and Jeff Muehlbauer of Elkhart Lake rounded out the top five.

Super Stock Action!! The Super Stocks kept the crowd on their feet here Mike Damrow (#2), Kevin Kenealy (center car) and Jim Bailey (#42) do battle during the feature event.

Greg Otte of Sheboygan Falls won the 15 lap Winged Super Modified B- Semi-feature, while Tommy Johnson of Slinger was victorious in the 8 lap Winged Super Modified C- Semi-Feature.

Good day, bad day! Steve Hoffmann the current Limited Late Model point leader started the day off with a fast qualifying effort, he then ran a strong fourth in the feature event. His car however did not fare so well in the powder puff race and it incurred a good deal of damage after hitting the frontstretch wall.
