Late Models Ready for Return to Manitowoc High Banks!
May 18, 1998; Manitowoc, WI. - The roar of late model racing will return to the Manitowoc Expo Raceway on Sunday night, May 31, as top United Midwestern Promoters' drivers from throughout the area converge on the high-banked, 1/3-mile clay oval.
The event will mark the first late model special of the season at the track Last year's lone late model race, which was won by Russ Scheffier, drew a field of over 30 cars, A similar car count is expected for the Memorial Weekend spectacular.
UMP, which will sanction all late model races at Manitowoc in 1998, is the governing body at tracks all over the country with well over 1,200 drivers competing throughout the year under its banner.
Based in Evansville, IN, UMP is the sanctioning body of two of the nation's biggest late model races, The Wodd 100 and Dirt Late Model Dream, both of which are held at the Eldora (OH) Speedway.
UMP is also the weekly sanctioning body at the Hales Corners (WI) Speedway which should yield a good group of drivers for the Manitowoc event. Several cars from Northeastern Wisconsin are also expected.
While Scheffier may be the favorite many others will challenge for the win including Al Atkinson, Jimmy Watson, Ted Dolhun, T.J. Dolhun, and Gordie Seegert.
Also scheduled to compete with the late models will be IMCA-style modifieds, dirt sportsman, and two-man cruiser cars. Gates will open at 3:00 pm with late modet qualifying set for 5:30 pm and racing at 6:00 pm.
