JACOB DOLHUN WIN UMP LATE MODEL SPECIAL AT MANITOWOC!!

May 31, 1998; Manitowoc, WI. -  Despite the fact that he led every lap of Sunday night's United Midwestern Promoters' late model feature at the Manitowoc Expo Raceway Jacob Dolhun's drive to victory lane was anything but easy.

Several challengers took a shot at Doihun during the 25-1ap feature event with Jimmy Watson's bid for victory falling less than a car length short at the stripe as Dolhun went on to collect his second feature win of the season and first ever at Manitowoc.

In other action Jesse Cuilen won the dirt sportsman feature while Mike Mashl took home the modified main event. Team Melvin won the cruiser finale.

It took three tries to get the late model feature rolling as a pair of incidents before the first lap could be scored slowed the pace. As the field raced down the backstretch on the initial green flag start Pat Kinjerski, Gordie Seegert, and Al Atkinson all got together and ended up facing the wrong way in turn three. The second yellow was caused by Matt Schultz who stalled in turn one.

The third try was the charm as Dolhun jumped into the lead followed by Schuitz, Bobby Smith, Bret Sievert, and Watson. Dolhun was able to pull out to a three car length lead by lap three as Schultz tried to fend off Smith for the runner-up spot.

The yellow came back out on the third lap as Atkinson and Skip Martin tangled on the frontstretch sending both cars spinning. Atkinson's night was through following this incident while Martin continued from the tail of the field.

Just three laps later it was Dolhun seeing the yellow again as after building a lead over second running Smith the car driven by Ron Stroika spun in turn three.

With Dolhun leading and Smith chasing all eyes were focused on Russ Scheffier as, after starting 17th, he had worked his way up into the top five by the 6th lap. Scheffier's race ended just as the field was about to take the green flag as something broke in the back end of his mount which sent him to the pit area. Scheffier would return but not be a factor and ended up finishing 14th.

Dolhun jumped out to a two car length lead on Smith as the field went green with Sievert, Watson and Chris Carlson giving chase. The top five remained the same through lap 20 when Scott Crowbridge brought out the final caution flag with a spin in turn three.

Sievert's top five run ended just as the field took the green flag as he drove his mount to the infield and watched the final dash while collecting 14th place honors.

It took Watson three laps to get around Smith and gain the second spot as he chose to use what had been a non-existant outside groove. Watson quickly closed on Dolhun as the white flag waved and ran side-by-side with the leader as they went down the backstetch.

Watson tried to make his car stick on the outside through tums three and four but drifter over the cushion slightly and ended up chasing Dolhun to the stripe. Smith, Carlson, and T.J. Dolhun completed the top five.

Mashl, making his first start of the year at Manitowoc after refusing an IMCA motor claim at a different track, drove to a comfortable lead and won the modified feature by nearly half the track over Mike Kudick.

Shawn Jaeger led the opening laps of the caution-plagued event only to lose the lead after driving through the infield on lap two. His mishap pushed Jim Zdroik into the lead but he could hold only for a lap as Mike Corm took over.

Mashl then drove by Conn on lap eight and immediatley built his margin. Corm found himself in a dogfight for second as the laps wound down with Kudick getting by with five laps left to take second.

Corm, Roy Ihlenfeld and Jessie Bray completed the top five in 20-1ap feature.

Cullen inherited the lead from Todd Krause after Krause cut a tire down on his mount and went on to win the dirt sportsman feature over Bill Rezutek, Eddie Lemay, Jr., Jerry Delebreau, and Billy Lemay.

Action continues at the Manitowoc Expo Raceway this coming Sunday night with 360 sprint cars, modifieds, dirt sportsman, and cruisers on the card. Qualifying is set for 5:30 with racing at 6:00 pm.

The track is located just off of 1-43 and Highway 151 on the southwestern side of Manitowoc at the county Expo Grounds. For further information call the track office at (888) 999-3818.
