Randy Brunette collects $1,000 Outlaw Modified Win!!

Points leader Brian VanScoy of Franksville drive to a hard fought victory in the 20-lap Winged Super Modified feature race, July 13th, at Manitowoc County Expo Raceway.

Winged Super Modified point leader Brian Van Scoy, took home his first feature win of the 1997 season at the Manitowoc County Expo Raceway. Van Scoy had used consistant performance and has atteneded every race to climb to the top of the standings.

Van Scoy, winning his first feature of the season in the 20-lap race, took the early lead on lap 7 until Steve Brickner spun out on the front stretch on lap 9. Van Scoy pulled out the win and led on the final 11 laps despite an onslaught of competition in excellent racing conditions. Bill Wenninger of Kewaskum pulled into second place in the fast paced race that capped a night of racing action at Expo Raceway. Alex Crimmings of Iron Ridge captured third place, followed by Tony Wondra of Campbellsport in fourth and Steve Bricker of Two Rivers fifth. Tom Spooner of Antioch, Il, spun out early but the spinout failed to slow the pace.

A $1,000 top prize, brings a smile to IMCA Outlaw Modified feature winner Randy Brunette. The win was Brunette's first of the season and he could not have pciked a better night to win!

In the 35 lap outlaw modified feature race, Randy Brunette of Chilton pulled into victory lane despite being chased all the way to the checkered flag by Dennis Schultz, who captured second place. Schultz started in 12th in the feature. Rounding out the field in the caution-filled outlaw modified main event were Jesse Brey of Manitowoc in third place, Randy Lemieux in fourth place, and Tom Stark, fifth place. Among other drivers' problems, Chris Derrane hit the guardrail coming out of turn 2 and Brian Reif of Mishicot spun out also coming out of turn 2, followed by Mike Kudnick of Mishicot, who spun out into the mud.

Local driver Gregg Haese took a clean sweep in the Super Stock division. After claiming his heat race on the last lap he went on to win the feature event. The win was very popular for the hometown driver.

Gregg Haese of Two Rivers raced to a first-place victory in the 15-lap super stock feature race with the rest of the top five in tight competition. Nelson took the lead despite a spinout in turn 1 on lap 8, relinquishing the lead to Dan Deau until recapturing it on lap 10. Deau ended up in second place. Dan Nelson of Brillion, who kept the heat on Haese throughout much of the race before a hit in turn 1 which caused him to spin into the center mud, trailed in third place. Rounding out the top five were Rick Otte of Cedar Grove in fourth place and Kel Lamb of Sheboygan in fifth place. Todd Krause of Green Bay left the field after his car's front bumper collapsed.

The second feature in a row for Kevin Shillcox did not come easy as he had a race long battle with Tom Leonard for the top spot in the event. In the end Shillcox came out on top.

In the 15-lap street stock feature race, Kevin Shillcox took a strong early lead but was forced to push his car to the limit in the battle for first place as Tom Leonhard of Two Rivers rode his tail to the finish line. The win was Shillcox's second straight feature win of the year. Leonard nabbed second place. Rounding out the field were Brian Kaat in third place, Dale Carbon of Whitelaw in fourth place and Kirk Shillcox in fifth place. Both Kaat and Carbon pulled out of a bumper-to-bumper race that landed them in the mud to take their respective finishes in the feature race. Carbon struggled early in the race to keep his car under control coming out of turns.

David Williams and Gary Faulkner of Green Bay overcame early mechanical problems to take the win in the 6-lap cruisers feature race. The Williams-Faulkner team has been plagued by mechanical problems throughout the season. Melvin Boettcher and Melvin Kuehn pulled into second place, while Jason Close and Ken Anderson of Pulaski sank into third place after encountering engine problems during the last lap.

The heat races provided action in every lap. In the super winged modified heat, Steve Bricker took first place, followed by Brian Van Scoy in second; Bill Wenninger, third; Alex Crimmings, fourth; and Tony Wondra, fifth.

Tom Stark took first place in the first heat in the outlaw modified class. Rick Mott followed in second place, with Dennis Schultz in third place; Randy Lemieux, fourth place; and Chris Derrane, fifth place. Jesse Brey took first place in the second heat, with David Otte in second place; Brian Reif, third place; Randy Brunette, fourth place; and Todd Ewald, fifth place.

In the super stock heat, Gregg Haese took first place in one of the closest and most thrilling finishes ever at Expo Raceway. Haese and Dan Deau rode side-by-side on the home stretch in the last lap until Haese overtook Deau within a few feet of the finish line. Behind them were Todd Krause in third place; Rick Otte, fourth place; and Anthony Miller, fifth place.

Kevin Shillcox took the win in the street stock heat in a side-by-side finish with Jim Pritzl. Rounding out the top five were Pritzel in second place; Kirk Shillcox, third place; Dale Carbon, fourth place; and Brian Kaat, fifth place.

In the cruisers heat race, Jason Close and Ken Anderson nabbed first place. Melvin Boettcher and Melvin Kuehn captured second place after surviving a hit by Close and Anderson. Williams and Faulkner took third after car problems put them out of the heat.

Next week, Sunday evening July 13th, there will be a special IMCA Outlaw Challenge event with a chance to win $1,000. The cars are based on IMCA rules and follow those rules with the exception that drivers may add a roof wing. Hot laps on the 1/3 mile banked oval are set to begin at 6:00 P.M. and the first race is to start at 7:00 P.M.

Racing will also take place in the Winged Super Modifieds, Super Stock, Street Stock and Crusier divisions. The track is located just outside of Manitowoc, at the Manitowoc County Fairgrounds near the intersections of Highway 151 and Interstate 43.
