Steve Bricker won his first career Winged Super Modified feature. A couple weeks ago, while Bricker was leading an event mechanical problems robbed him of a chance for victory. Tonight his car performed flawlessly and he found victory lane and the company of "Hooters Girl" Elizabeth Haston. |
Second-year driver Steve Bricker of Two Rivers won his first Winged Super Modified feature of the season, in a race that had six lead changes in just 20 laps. Alex Crimmings took the early lead until lap four, when he and Bricker collided, bringing out the caution. Bricker went to the tail of the field, while Crimmings was unable to continue. Paul Pokorski of West Bend then inherited the lead off the restart.

Pokorski held command until his new wing, began to fold up halfway through the event. The side panel finally collapsed and he was black flagged, turning the lead over to current point leader Brian Van Scoy. The next caution appeared on lap 12, with VanScoy still in the lead, when Lee Mohs spun out in turn four.
On the restart VanScoy again led until his right rear tire failed, turning over the lead to Chuck Tuschl, with the hard charging Bricker recovering from his earlier mishap to run in the runner-up slot. Bricker was able to run down and pass Tuschl and paced the rest of the event to the checkered flag. Rounding out the top five was Tuschl, John Spooner, Tony Wondra and Bill Wenninger.

Brad Anderegg of Algoma overtook polesitter Dean Mauer and led all 25 laps of the Outlaw Modified feature. He smoothly stayed on top as he fought off two cautions and lapped traffic to earn his first Manitowoc feature. Points leader Jesse Brey finished second ahead of Maurer, Dave Otte and Dave Fischer.

The caution-less 15 lap Super Stock event went Dan Nelson's way as he took home his fourth feature in the class of the season. Jesse Cullen took the early lead while a tight battle ensued between Nelson, Rick Otte and Chad Rathke. Halfway through the race, Cullen encountered lapped traffic, allowing Nelson to pass for the lead. Cullen came home second, Rathke third, Otte claimed fourth and Todd Krause rounded out the top five.

Veteran driver Tom Leonard won his third feature of the year as he charged around some strong competition to the take checkered flag. Dale Carbon held the early lead until caution came out on lap eight when Kevin Shillcox hit the guardrail in turn four, sending the right rear portion of his car high into the air, ending his night. Off the restart, a tight battle ensued for first place between Joe Casadonte, Leonard and Bob Stadler. On lap 12, Leonard grabbed the lead for good with Kirk Shillcox finishing second. Third through fifth went to Casadonte, Stadler, and Bob Cullen.
Cruisers provided the bump and rub action for the night as Team Melvin took the 10-lap feature event. The battle for the lead included some special effects as both the front runners spun in turn four, creating a drag race down the front stretch for the lead. Finishing second was the team of Faulkner/Williams while third went to the Anderson/Close team.

The Legends Cars made their second appearance at the Manitowoc Speedway as they provided tight racing on the 1/3 mile high-banked clay oval. Tim McQuiston grabbed the early lead from the outside of row two until Scott Haupt passed him on lap six and led the rest of the way to the checkered flag. McQuiston, Ken Ullman, Joe Haupt, and Darwin Banes rounded out the top five in the event.
Next Sunday on July 27th, 1997, the USA Bandit 360 Sprinters which include such top drivers as K.J. Skelton, Jerry Schultz, Gregg Cruzon and J.J. Hoch will appear along with a regular full program of racing including Winged Super Modifieds, Outlaw Modifieds, Super Stocks, Street Stocks and Cruisers.
Hot Laps will start at 5:00 P.M. and the first race will take place at 6:00 P.M. This will mark the first ever appearance of the '360 Sprints" at the raceway. The track is located just outside of Manitowoc, at the Manitowoc County Fairgrounds near the intersections of Highway 151 and Interstate 43.
