| Chesmore Ices Championship with a Win in Season Championship 75 Lapper at

September 10, 2000; Jefferson, WI. - Dan Chesmore of Janesville ended his championship season with a victory in the Havill-Spoerl Automotive Family 75 lap feature on Wisconsin’s Action Track. Starting from the outside of row 7 Chesmore started his drive to the front as Randy Cusick of Ft. Atkinson pulled out to the early lead.
The race saw a single caution, on lap 11, for a spin in the first turn, involving 2 cars. Cusick led the restart with Chesmore up to 7th. On lap 17 Chris Purdy of Milton motored past Ken Olson of Ft. Atkinson for 3rd, with Chesmore close behind for the 4th spot. Chesmore went to work on Purdy, claiming the 3rd spot by lap 22.
Mike Taylor of Stoughton surrendered the 2nd spot to Chesmore, following a 2 lap battle, and Chesmore started closing with Cusick on lap 24. Moving to the inside of Cusick on lap 26, Chesmore claimed the point on lap 27, guiding the field from there to the checkered flag.
As Chesmore led the way, Ron Bishofberger of Ft. Atkinson moved through the field, claiming the 2nd spot from Cusick on lap 58. At the stripe it was Chesmore by a half lap over Bishofberger followed by Cusick, Olson and Russ Goodwin of Beloit. Chesmore entered the evening ensured of the 2000 championship, but the feature win was icing on the cake. Chesmore set the fast mark in qualifying with a 14.906 second tour of the quarter mile. Scott Nottestad of Cambridge claimed victory in the 8 lap Dash for Cash. Claiming victories, in 10 lap heat races, were Don Mattrisch of Whitewater, Olson and Beau Sanden of Janesville. Moving to the feature lineup, from the 20 lap Last Chance race were Denny Stair of Sullivan, Jason Erickson of Cambridge, Ryan Ley of Rome and Scott Nottestad of Cambridge. I should note that, for the championships, the top 14 in the point standings were locked into the feature lineup and everyone else had to come through the Last Chance race.
In International class action Brent (yes "Brent", the rumors of Justin’s return have been greatly exaggerated) Nottestad ended his championship season with a third place finish in the 30 lap main event, while Ed Wolf III of Watertown claimed top honors in the feature. Starting from the outside of row 5, Wolf headed for the front, as Charles Dixon of Waukesha pulled out to the early lead. Caution came on lap 1, for a spin out of turn 2 that collected several cars. Dixon led the restart with Wolf up to 5th. Scott Uttech of Beaver Dam moved up to challenge Dixon on lap 3, claiming the top spot on lap 8. As Uttech claimed the point Wolf rolled to the second spot, launching his bid for the lead. Wolf and Uttech battled for two laps, before Wolf claimed the top spot. By lap 21 Mike Drays of Milton was challenging Uttech of the 2nd spot, with Nottestad close behind. Drays Claimed 2nd, on lap 23, with Nottestad moving to 3rd on lap 24. As the flew past the checkered flag it was Wolf for the win, followed by Drays, Nottestad, Uttech and Aaron Rude of Cambridge. Nottestad entered the evening with and insurmountable lead in the point standings and was crowned 2000 season champion. Nottestad set the fast qualifying pace with a 15.885 second circuit of the quarter mile. Claiming victories, in 8 lap heat races, were Rick Neerland of Ft. Atkinson and Uttech.
In Sportsman division action Trent Erdman of Ft. Atkinson claimed top honors in the final 35 lap main event of the season. Starting from the inside of row 6, Erdman started his trek to the checkered flag, with Dave Oswald of Cottage Grove close behind, as Joe Wendorf of Jefferson pulled out to the early lead.
Caution came on lap 9, for a spin on the back stretch, with Wendorf still at the point and Erdman up to the 4th spot. By lap 11, Erdman moved to the inside of Noel Ramge of Hellenville looking for the 3rd spot, with Jeff Kohlhoff of Watertown joining the battle. Kohlhoff suffered a flat tire, pulling from the track, as Erdman claimed 3rd. Erdman moved under Kevin Thompson of Palmyra, for 2nd, on lap 16 with Oswald running 4th. Motoring under Wendorf, on lap 18, Erdman made the winning pass, with Oswald right behind for the 2nd spot.
Oswald stayed with Erdman all the way to the finish but was never able to find a way around for the win. At the checkered flag it was Erdman for the win, followed by Oswald, Thompson, Josh Courtney of Janesville and Ramge. Oswald claimed his third Sportsman division championship, in three years. Kohlhoff set the fast qualifying pace, with a 15.734 second circuit of the quarter mile. Claiming victories, in 10 lap heat races, were Randy Padfield of Stoughton, Todd Goldade of Stoughton and jay Kalbus of Oconomowoc. Moving to the Last Chance race, from the 10 lap Consolation race were Ken Scott of Rio and Tim NawRocki of Wausau. Moving to the feature lineup via the 15 lap Last Chance race were Rich Rothwell of Madison, Pete Olsen of Ft. Atkinson, Todd Goldade and Kyle Munro of Ft. Atkinson.
In Hobby Stock Action, Bret Schmidt of Watertown claimed top honors in the 30 lap main event. Starting from the inside of row 3, Schmidt headed for the front as John Remsik of Middleton pulled out to the early lead. Caution came on lap 1, for a spin out of the 2nd turn, closing the field for the restart, with Remsik at the point and Schmidt running 3rd, behind Chris Matz of Watertown. Schmidt claimed 2nd on lap 11, with 3 and 4 wide racing going on behind him.
Caution came on lap 17, when on of the heated battles ended in the turn 1 wall. On the restart it was Remsik at the point followed by Schmidt and the point leader, Jim Pfeifer of Ft. Atkinson up to 4th. Pfeifer went to work on Chris Matz for 3rd, as Schmidt launched his bid for the lead. Schmidt claimed the top spot on lap 24, with Pfeifer joining the battle for 2nd, with Remsik. Pfeifer pulled ahead, into 2nd, on lap 28 closing with Schmidt. As they flew past the checkered flag it was Schmidt for the win followed by Pfeifer, Remsik, Matz and Ernie Witte of Johnson Creek. Pfeifer claimed the championship, before the final race started. Chuck Egli of Waterloo set the fast qualifying pace, with a 16.995 second orbit of the quarter mile. Claiming victories in 8 lap heat races, were Terry Wangsness of Whitewater, Lincoln Keeser of Milton, and Matz. Joining the feature lineup, from the 12 lap Last Chance race, were Brett Carson of Ft. Atkinson, Jeremy Hartwig of Cottage Grove, Chuck Egli of Waterloo and Jay Finnegan of Milton. This closes the regular racing season at Jefferson Speedway for the year 2000, but there is still more to come! Next weekend Jefferson Speedway hosts the 20th annual Pepsi Wisconsin State Championships, on Friday and Saturday, September 15 and 16. Top drivers from all over the state will compete for $27,000 in price money. Friday night: Gates open at 2:00, Track opens at 3:00, qualifying at 5:30 and racing at 8:00.
