Al Schill Sr. (#14) the defending Super Late Model champion at Lake Geneva Raceway powered home to his third feature win of the 1999 racing season. Schill, who has won track titles the previous two seasons is also the current point leader. He is joined by Jr. Fan Ben Schultz in the winner circle. |
Double duty driver, Landry Potter grabbed the lead from his pole starting position in Super Late Model action. Joe Fisher, Kent Burkoth, Al Schill and Brad Durbin were right behind him. It was a very tight field, but Burkoth managed to slip under Fisher of lap seven, with everyone still side by side. Visiting John Nutley, steadily moved forward, reaching sixth on lap ten. Schill was now third, pressuring Burkoth.
Three laps later, Schill was up to second and working on Potter for the lead. The intense pace continued, with no one giving an inch, but Schill, Nutley, Durbin and quick timer Danny Darnell worked on their competition. By lap fifteen Schill was along side the leader Potter, with both dicing for that top spot. On lap seventeen, Schill crept in front with Burkoth taking over second two laps later. Potter wasn't going to let that happen, jumping back in front the next go round.
The first and only caution came on lap twenty three, when Dave Cresca's engine let loose. Officials put the cone on the track, Schill took outside, Burkoth inside next row and Nutley along side him. The green came out and Schill led the next lap, before Burkoth charged in front. Schill wasn't going to let that fly, slipping under Schill to become the leader before the lap ended. The dash for the final four laps saw some excellent racing, as Schill showed why he was point leader, as Nutley and Darnell both nipped Burkoth on that final lap. Randy Rodgers was next, with Durbin, Mark Simonsen and Russ Blakley following.
| Even the Super Late Models get into an occasional jam. Here drivers Denny Hiffman (#41-on wall) and Garrett Fait (#38) got together on the backstretch. | ![]() |
Norm Paulsen darted out front of the 20 car super stock feature, with Willy Peterson, Dan Huber, Greg Janutka and John Maki all over the leader. Huber got a break on lap three, taking over the top spot before Maki put Paulsen down one more spot. The only caution came on lap five, as Doug Peterson and Troy weber got together. Using the cone for the first time this season on their restarts, Huber picked the right spot, taking the lead on the next green.
Maki corrected and moved back in front the next lap, with lots of action up front. Adam Regnier made a move for the front spot, securing the front on lap eight. Fast timer, Shane Bishop was on a mission, after starting near rear, this driver was into third by lap twelve. The top ten were so close with third place Jerry Cowan, Janutka, Huber and Zac Deeringer putting on quite the show. Bishop finally got by Maki just five laps to go.
John Janssen joined this front running cluster, after a brutal battle with Cowan. Bishop fought with Regnier for the lead until lap seventeen, then it was his race to win. Deeringer moved into second one lap later, but time ran out for the challenge. Bishop scored the victory, but a post race inspection put the hard luck driver in last place. Deeringer was given the win with Regnier, Janssen, Maki, Marty Rob , Cowan, Janutka and Greg Peterson rounding out the top eight.
LeRoy Potter paced the field in the sportsman 20 lap main event, with Shawn Donnelly in his second week here, second. Landry Potter moved into second on lap three and into the lead one lap later, just before the caution appeared.
On the restart Donnelly started to smoke and was sent to the pits while running fourth. Landry Potter went on to win the event, despite one more caution and continous challenges from first, Eric Roberts and then James Swan. But at the finish it was Potter, Swan, Scotty Poritz, Roberts and LeRoy Potter.
