Carlson Wins Al Schill Jr. Memorial Feature at Lake Geneva!
By Dale R. Erdmann

July 3, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was hot racing weather, as outside temperatures climbed to nearly 100 degrees and a heat index of 110, at Lake Geneva Raceoay, Saturday night, for the RE/MAX Challenge race series NASCAR touring stars. The first to be annual "Al Schill Jr. Memorial Race" for 125 laps was won by Steve Carlson of West Salem. Carlson is the defending champion of the series and current point leader. John Janssen of Genoa City won the special 30 lap super stock feature race.

Brian Hoppe grabbed the lead at the onset of the 125 lap event. Brad Wagner, Ron Breeze Jr. and John Lemke were next. Lemke quickly moved up, taking over second on lap eight. The first caution appeared that lap, as Wagner spun, with everyone missing him. With yellow laps being counted the next green came on lap eighteen, as Hoppe charged out front. While Lemke and Carlson were next, this group was very tight Dave Feiler, Jimmy Mars, Breeze and Mark Kraus following the leaders.

The next caution came on lap twenty four, as Breeze looped his mount, with the rest of field going by. This caution lasted until lap thirty two, with Hoppe still out front. By lap thirty eight, Lemke slipped under the leader, but never got more than halfway up along side of Hoppe. Carlson tried the outside, but to no avail, with Feiler, Eddie Hoffman and Jamie McMurray next. On lap forty three, Carlson got around Lemke and four laps later, Hoppe could feel the heat. At lap fifty, the order of the top ten, was Hoppe, Carlson, Lemke , Hoffman, Feiler, McMurray, Larry Middleton Jr.,  J.R. Roahrig, Travis Kvapil and Al Schll Sr.

The race slowed again on lap fifty one, with action resuming on lap fifty eight. When lap sixty three began, Hoppe and Carlson were side by side. This continued until the next caution on lap seventy. Racing began again on lap seventy nine, with Hoppe, Carlson, Lemke and Hoffman all over each other. Paul Paine joined this cluster on lap eighty, but John Nutley, Mark Kraus and Breeze Jr. tangled on lap eighty four stopping the action one more time. Schill was clearly the car on the move, now running sixth.

The next green was thrown on lap ninety, when Carlson overhauled Hoppe, Schill now moved into fifth.

There was another slowdown on lap ninety three, with racing beginning again, on lap ninety six. Lapped cars started on the inside, with the leaders lined up single file outside. Hoppe and Lemke diced for second, with Carlson just in front, Schill was right behind Hoffman looking to take fourth. All out racing ensued throughout the remainder of the event, as Carlson won the race just in front of Hoppe, Hoffman, Schill, who moved through the field to finish fourth, Lemke, Feller, Kvapil, Jason Schuler who set fast time, Mars and Kraus, rounding out the top ten finishers.

Scott Eggebrecht moved in front of the 24 car super stock feature, with Tom Fay, Adam Regnier and John Maki close behind. Bob Koidahl who started fifth row outside, was on the move. Running sixth on lap three, fourth on lap five and challenging for the lead on lap seven. One lap later there vas a new leader as Koidahl took the point.. Maki followed the new leader into second, as Shane Bishop slipped into third. Maki led lap twelve, but Koidahl took it back one lap later. That's when quick qualifier John Janssen took over that second spot.

Janssen out maneuvered Kiodahl on lap seventeen, two laps later, Marty Robb blew a transmission plug all around the oval, for the first of only two cautions. The super stocks elected to use the cone restart, where the drivers could choose the lane of their choice for the restart. With Janssen the leader, Kiodahl and Bishop scaped for the the runner up spot on lap twenty. Dan Huber and Jim Hughes tangled on lap twenty six causing the final caution. This creating a four lap dash, after the restart.

It vas a very close battle, as Janssen won the event, Bishop, Kiodahl, Zac Deeringer, Maki, Jeff Lornez, a recovering Huber and Regnier.
