Rick Corso (#88) was on a mission this evening at Lake Geneva Raceway. Here he completes a three wide pass in the Mid-American Sportsman feature race. Corso was out front of the fog shortened event when the checkered flag flew! |
Todd Peterson shot out front of the 20 car, super stock feature, with Jim Hughes, Tom Fay, John Maki and Jeremy Tess right on his tail. Fay slipped in front of Hughes on lap two, as Greg Janutka got around Tess on lap three. Maki was making a quick charge forward, securing third on lap five. One lap later, Janutka was on Maki's bumper, following his every move.
Fay got wide on lap seven, with Maki moving under him for second. Peterson could feel the heat on lap eight, with Maki, Janutka and Fay all over him. One lap later, Maki was the new leader. Hughes spun entering turn four, bringing the torrid pace to a halt. This was the first time, anyone had a spot without someone along side them, as Maki inched ahead in the lead on the restart.
Janutka moved in on the leader on lap eleven, with Tess just waiting for any mistake. Suddenly, Rick Corso, driving the Greg Peterson mount, moved up on the front cluster. Dicing for second, Janutka and Corso swapped the position many times, before Corso secured that spot on lap eighteen.
Coming off turn four Tess slowed coming to the pits ending his run in the front pack. Janutka just moved in front of Corso, as water dumped from his mount. Cars spun all over turn one as Janutka headed to the pit area, and the caution appeared.

The green appeared with Maki securely in front on lap twenty. Corso then tried first the outside, then the inside to work on the leader. The last thing Maki wanted to see would be another caution flag, but it came out with two laps to go. Adam Regnier broke an axle, collecting Jeff Lornez, stopping a great race. Marry Robb settled to the infield with a flat tire, while running fifth, ending his fast time hopes to win the event.
Corso was the leader prior to the caution, so he started on the pole, Maki took the inside, right behind him. With the green out, Corso held his line, Maki then tried to move outside, but then Zac Deeringer who was running a conservative race, was inside Maki, with John Janssen behind the point leader. Maki made a last lap attempt to scoot past Janssen for third, but the cars crossed the line with Corso less than a foot in front of Deeringer, as Janssen nipped Maki, with Dan Huber, Troy Weber, Fay and Peterson all right there, in this thrilling event.
Brad Troxel led the first lap of the sportsman main event, with Scott Koerner biting at his heels. Koerner grabbed the top spot on lap two, as Chris Wangrow and Mike Lange working on Troxel. LeRoy Potter used the outside to move into third on lap seven, with Wangrow second and Koerner way out front.
By lap nine, Rick Corso entered the top five. Somehow, Wangrow got around the leader Koerner, with Corso, LeRoy Potter and Landry Potter following quickly, as Koerner faded to fifth, on lap fourteen.
Corso wasn't content with second, dicing for that top spot, and then taking over the lead before end of lap fifteen. The tight field didn't give an inch, with Landry Potter working on LeRoy Potter. The fog was starting to roll in, when LeRoy spun in turn one. Shawn Donnelly had no where to go, smashing into the disabled mount. No one was injuried, but for both drivers night was over.

Starter Dave Rex Jr. talked to some of the field and felt, the conditions were not safe enough to continue the race. Corso was declared the winner, with Wangrow, Landry Potter, Brian Baker, Koerner, Danny Church and Mike DeKeuster rounding out the top eight.
