Rodgers tops Lates, Maki and Sontag score close feature wins!
By Dale R. Erdmann

August 14, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. It was an excellent night for stock car races, as the weather was picture perfect on the eighteenth Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway of the 1999 season, during our salute to the kids, for the annual junior fan club night.

Randy Rodgers (#14) had been making a late season surge in the point standings, this evening he recorded his third Super Late Model victory of 1999.

Randy Rodgers of Lake Geneva scored his third super late model feature of the season, tightening up, the already close point battle. John Maki of Antioch, Illinois came across the line on the final lap, just in front, to win his second career feature, in the 20 lap super stock main event. Mark Sontag of Joliet, IL. started last in the 20 lap sportsman feature, after arriving too late to qualify, but worked his way through the field, winning his first career feature here.

Only one lap was recorded for the super late model feature, when someone got out of square, causing the field to check up. Cars went everywhere, bringing the contest to a halt. Rookie driver Garrett Fait popped out front, with Tim Lynn Jr. and former Mid American champion, Jeff Storm along with him. Lynn got high in turn four, with Storm and Joe Fisher slipping under him on lap four. Two laps later, Fisher was on the move, inching past Storm, just before they tangled, stopping the action, again.

Each time there was a challenge, Fait would hold his own, as now Lynn was back in second. Denny Hiffman, Jason Hicks, visiting Fran Prestay and Rodgers were next. Hicks was on the outside of Hiffman, securing third on lap eleven. Back just a little bit further, Kent Burkoth, Russ Blakley and Al Schill were trying to move up.

Sneaking past!  Randy Rodgers (#14) runs the extreme low line around the track.  It must have been the fast line as he powered past Fran Prestay (#99) and Landry Potter (#22) on his way to the win.

On lap nineteen, Prestay and Hicks made contact, with Hicks on the infield and lots of sheet metal damage, this was the final caution of the event. On the restart Rodgers shot in front, winning the race, just ahead of Burkoth, Schill, Fait, Lynn, a recovering Storm and Prestay, with Hiffman holding onto eighth.

He likes victory lane!  John Maki (#28) won his first career McHenry Limo Super Stock feature a few short weeks ago. Tonight he won the main event by inches for his second career feature victory.

The 20 car super stock feature brought rookie driver Dan Huber out front, with Tom Fay, Norm Paulsen, Mike Kooi and Jermey Tess, right there. On lap four, John Maki scooted past Tess and Kooi . One lap later Troy Weber got pushed around facing traffic, as the field came bearing down. Just before the caution flew, Weber drove around the turn, the wrong way, but he made it to the infield, without incident.

Off course!  Bob Koidahl (#89) and current Super Stock point lead get together and go into the infield during feature action.  The incident knocked both cars from contention for the win.

That restart gave Paulsen and Fay, the break they needed. Both tried the leader on the inside and outside. Nothing fazed Huber, as they would mount a challenge afew times, each lap. On lap nine, Rick Koidahl running just in front of Paulsen tagged Fay, causing the Koidahl car to spin onto the infield. The incident collected point leader Zac Deeringer and the race stopped again.

Close quarters racing!  John Janssen (#43) is just out front of Mike Kooi (#76) in racing action this evening and is likely wondering where the extra horsepower is coming from.  Janssen, the defending champion, would finish third in the main event this evening.

Huber slipped back in front, on the restart with Fay along side, Paulsen. These two would keep the pressure on the leader. On lap twelve, Paulsen slipped wide, as Maki, Tess and Jeff Lorenz got under him. Maki worked on Fay for nearly four laps, finally securing second on lap sixteen.

The next four laps were just too close to call, as Huber looked like he'd pull off his first win of his career, but Maki, who Huber pitted for last season, was ahead on lap eighteen. Huber came back in from on the white flag lap. The crowd was on their feet, as it was a dead heat on that final lap. Huber was ahead in turn one, Maki crept in front out of two, then Huber came ahead in turn three and four, but coming across the line, Maki nipped his fellow Antioch driver, for the win. John Janssen got under Fay for third, Shane Bishop the fast time qualifier was fifth, Mart Robb, Tess and Lorenz were next in this real thriller.

A surprice appearance by Mark Sontag (#1) netted the Illinois driver his first Mid-American Sportsman win of the season at Lake Geneva Raceway.  Sontag just completed the car as the lettering on the vehicle was not yet complete.

Patrick Marcott paced the sportsman feature, staying ahead of Nick Schumacher until James Swan moved into second on lap nine. Last weeks runner up LeRoy Potter was now along side Swan for second, with Mark Sontag and Scott Poritz next. This event would go non-stop, as Marcott diced with Swan for the lead, the next two laps.

Then there was a new leader with Swan out front. There was nothing easy, being in front, with Sontag waiting for a mistake from the leader. Swan got wide on lap sixteen. Sontag moved in front for two laps, but Swan came back in front again. Poritz the quick timer battled with Potter, finally moving into third just before the lead change. The top ten were tight, as Sontag went out front with one lap to go. But Swan came back before turn two, then coming down to the wire, Swan was ahead just past turn four. At the stripe Sontag pulled off the win, with Swan, Poritz, Potter, Mike Lange, Marcott, Brian Baker and Dan Erikson next in line.
