Prestay picks up
second Super Late win of season at Geneva!
By Dale R. Erdmann
August 28, 1999; Lake
Geneva, WI. - Fran
Prestay of Silver Lake, a two time champion, in late model competition here, won his
second 30 lap super late model feature of the season, at Lake Geneva Raceway, Saturday, on
Avoco Oil of Rockford night. John Janssen of Genoa City won the 20 lap super stock feature
and Chad Ross of Kenosha, won the 15 lap sport truck feature.
 |
Fran Prestay (#99) has been running a limited
schedule of events this season at Lake Geneva Raceway in Super Late Model action.
Tonight he made his appearance payoff as he scored his second feature win of
the season and was joined in victory lane by lucky Jr. Fan Club member David Erickson |
The 18 car, super late model feature, got off to a rocky start, taking some sixteen
minutes to get 8 laps off the ground. First Randy Rodgers and Al Schill tangled,
collecting Larry Surleta for the first caution. Then Jeff Storm, Garrett Fait, Denny
Hiffman and Paul Loppnow got together in turn four, bringing out another caution. During
that time, Joe Fisher led those first four laps. On the restart, Fran Prestay who started
right behind, pole sitter Fisher, shot out front.
| Taking the lead! Fran Prestay (#99) slips
to the low side of race leader Joe Fisher (#2) during the Super Late Model main event.
Prestay would take the lead and go on to win the event. |
 |
Once in front, Prestay quickly built up a three car advantage. Fisher now had Danny
Darnell, who was driving cousin Ronnie's mount was knocking on his door. By lap nine,
Darnell was second. Right behind this group, Landry Potter, Jamie Wallace Kent Burkoth and
an already recovered Al Schill were running next. On lap eleven, Potter got around Fisher,
with Wallace, Burkoth and Schill following, four laps later. By lap twenty, the first and
only car was lapped, as the leader extended his lead to a full eight cars.
 |
One of the sharpest looking machines to compete
at Lake Geneva Raceway is the Super Late Model of Jim Kjellander (#55). Kjellander
won a heat race this evening on the third-mile paved oval. |
Prestay won the event, but Darnell cut that big advantage in half, by going deeper into
the corners, as time ran out, for the runner up. Potter, Burkoth, Wallace and Schill Nere
next.
| Defending Super Stock Champ, John Janssen (#43)
came home with top honors during tonight's feature event. Janssen currently lies
second in the standings to Zac Deeringer as the season heads into the final weeks of
action. |
 |
Greg Janutka slipped in front of the 20 car super stock contest, with Norm Paulsen,
Scott Eggebrecht, Dan Huber and Tom Fay, trying to advance. Outside pole sitter, Jeremy
Tess dropped out, for some unknown reason, after quick slow down. On lap four, Paulsen and
Fay tangled, causing Fay's right front tire to go down. On the restart, Janutka got the
short end of the stick, as Eggebecht moved along the leader before the green, reappeared.
Huber pulled off a slick move on lap six, cruising into second. Greg Peterson, Adam
Regnier all got by Janutka, who was still recovering from that last blow.
 |
Charging! Dan Huber (#44) drives a rare
make of car on the short-tracks these days. Racing a Dodge Charger, Huber has had
some success in his rookie season racing against a fleet of General Motors products. |
On lap eleven, Janutka who was still fifth, got put onto the wall , riding it most of
the back straightaway. Coming off just before turn three, his right front tire blew, after
that four deep situation. Janutka escaped injury, but his night was over with. Rookie
Huber, got under Eggebrecht on lap twelve, but Regnier was now challenging for second.
After successfully getting that spot away from Huber on lap fourteen, Regnier darted into
the lead, one lap later.
| Over the final laps of the Super Stock feature,
John Janssen (#43) slipped past Adam Regnier (#73) and Zac Deeringer to score the win.
Deeringer would claim second and Regnier got third. |
 |
Then the race got even closer, as Zac Deeringer and John Janssen worked on the leader.
Deeringer tried the inside, as Janssen stayed outside. Somehow, Janssen got around
Deeringer, and then Regnier with just two laps to go. Janssen soundly won the event, with
Deeringer nipping Regnier for second, as Eggebrecht took fourth, followed by John Maki,
part of that Antioch connection, Troy Weber, Huber and Peterson were next.
 |
Truckin'! Chad Ross (#3) fends off the
challenges of Chad Phillips (#14) during feature action in the Sport Truck division.
Ross would come home the winner of the event besting Phillips who finished second. |
The non stop sport truck feature, gave Vincent Merry the lead for just one lap. Chad
Phillips flew by on lap two, before Chad Ross grabbed the top spot on lap seven, winning
the race over Phillips, Bob Koidahl, R.J. Ross, Jim Olson and Curt Matson.
 |
How low can you go! Jeremy Tess (#60)
went a little too low and got off track during Super Stock action. Going by on the
outside are Todd Peterson (#16) and Bob Koidahl (#89). |
There are four more Friday night Moro Cross shows, due to the rain outs. The show
begins at 8 pm. on the stadium dirt course. On the paved track, Saturday night, the one on
one challenge races are the added attraction. The Wisconsin Allison Legacy series and the
sport trucks, join the super late models and super stocks at 6pm. for time trials and
racing at 7:30. Weekly racing continues through October 9th. For additional information
