Potter tops Super Lates for second time this year at LGR!
Erickson scores last lap Sportsman win!

By Dale R. Erdmann

September 11, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. It was an ideal night for racing, as Landry Potter of Delavan scored his second super late model 30 lap feature win on the twenty second night of racing this year, Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway. John Janssen of Genoa City, the defending super stock champion, won the 20 lap feature. Dan Erikson of Lyons won his second sportsman 20 lap feature of the season on the last lap and Chris Carlson of Cary, Illinois won the 15 lap Rascal Outlaw feature.

91199b.jpg (19099 bytes) Landry Potter (#22) scored his second Super Late Model feature victory of the 1999 racing season at Lake Geneva Raceway.  Potter is another driver who is having a strong run towards the end of the season as this was his second victory in the past six weeks.

Danny Darnell in his new mount slipped in front of the eighteen car starting field of the super late model feature, as the double greens flew. Terry Patnode was second, with Landry Potter next and Joe Fisher at his heels. Potter and Fisher got by Patnode on lap four, with Darnell nearly one car length in front. For the third week in a row Patnode experienced problems, dropping out on lap six. Larry Surleta, fast timer Brad Durbin and Kent Burkoth quickly filled the void, with the field still looking like a parade lap by lap ten.

New colors!  Danny Darnell (#85) appeared with a new car after he destroyed his familiar orange colored racer last week.   Darnell paced the Super Late Model feature early before being passed by Landry Potter (#22). 91199c.jpg (10532 bytes)

On lap twelve the scariest mishap of the evening took place. Rookie Russ Blakley spun in turn three, with eleven cars bearing down on him. The incident collected Garrett Fait, Bob Moeller and Mike Simon, who smashed hard into the drivers side of Blakley car. No one was injured, but there was severe damage to both cars. Darnell shot back in front, with Potter, Fisher, Durbin and Burkoth all over the leader. Lap nineteen Fait spun in turn two, bringing the grueling pace to another halt.

Darnell looked like he was on his way to victory, at the flash of the next green. Durbin got around Fisher on lap twenty, with Potter second. With everyone battling for a new position, Randy Rodgers got under Burkoth the next go round. Al Schill who won the semi in Jamie Wallace's car was right along side Rodgers the next lap, as Burkoth tried to recover. Those last five laps were intense, as Darnell maintained the lead. Then on lap twenty six smoke started to come from the Darnell mount. The black flag came one lap later, as lots of smoke came from the leader. Potter was now the leader, with Durbin along side him. The final two laps from first to tenth were to close to call, but at the checkered, Potter was the winner, as Durbin fell short, but held back Rodgers, Schill, Fisher, Burkoth Brian Urlich and a recovering Fait, in this close match up.

91199e.jpg (15790 bytes) A winning MOPAR!  Chrysler products appear in very limited quantities on short tracks these days but here at Lake Geneva Raceway, Dan Huber (#44) put his Dodge Charger in the winner's circle in Super Stock semi-feature action.

Doug Benedict couldn't get through the first lap, after spinning wildly off turn four. Then the stun crowd saw Jeremy Tess car start on fire, coming to rest at the pit exit, where officials quickly put the blaze out. Tess wasn't injured, but his night was over, even before a lap could be completed.

Marty Robb inched in front, in the Steve Zalas car he was using. Dave Lohse, Greg Peterson and Mike Kooi were all trying to be second. Dicing for the top four spots, Kooi got the black flag for using the middle of the track, after numerous warnings, from the starter. On lap six Peterson pulled off a slick move and slipped into the lead. Point leader Zac Deeringer, who was using Robb's car, grabbed second, with John Janssen at his side.

The Super Stocks are an entry level division here at Lake Geneva Raceway and drivers don't always head the right direction in the heat of battle as illustrated here. 91199d.jpg (12004 bytes)

This event would go non stop, after the first lap incident, as Peterson maintained the lead until lap fifteen. Then Janssen pulled around the leader, with everyone trying to move up. First Adam Regnier and quick timer Shane Bishop got around Peterson. Bishop got under Regnier was two laps to go, but Regnier fought, with Janssen out front. The white flag was displayed, as the runner up spot would be contested. Janssen won the event, with Regnier nipping Bishop for second, as Deeringer held on to fourth, with Jerry Cowan, Jeff Lorenz, Peterson and Doug Peterson so close.

Rookie driver Al Coopland, only in his fourth night out, moved in front of the starting field, of the sportsman main event. Lee Gibbs, Jerry Freeman, Willie Peterson and Dan Erikson were next. Freeman got by Gibbs on lap five and two laps later LeRoy Potter stalled, bringing out the only caution just as Brad Troxel shot into the pits. Coopland again secured the top spot, with Freeman next.

From the back of the pack, fast timer Joe Francisco, point leader Scott Poritz, Brian Baker and Mid American point leader Rick Corso were putting on a show, trying to move forward. Positions were too close to call, as the field diced for a spot higher. Coopland looked good out front, until lap nineteen. Drifting higher than usual, Erikson saw the opportunity and took it. Slipping past Freeman and under the leader. Surprisingly, Coopland nipped Erikson at the line. But the final lap the same thing happened, this time Erikson held on to win this exciting contest, with Coopland second, Baker third, with Corso, Francisco, Mike Lange, Chris Wangrow and Freeman completing the top eight.

That Rascal!  Chris Carlson (#24) took the lead from fast qualifier Jim Veugler in the Rascal Outlaw feature and went on to score the win.

It took quick timer Jim Veugeler, former moto cross rider here, just two laps to get to the front, taking the lead from Bob Torkelson. Until a lap ten caution stopped the race, the leader maintained a strong advantage. On the restart, Chris Carlson shot right past the leader and never looked back. Taking the win over Veugeler, Bob Torkelson, Dave Colletti, Butch Torkelson and Kevin Popaeko.

Friday night September 17th. moto cross racing takes place at 8 pm. on the stadium dirt course. On the oval the season championships for the McHenry Limo super stocks and the sportsman cars takes place . The super late models and Wisconsin Allison Legacy cars will be here too.
