Durbin tops Super Late Model action...championship chase winds down to final weeks at Lake Geneva Raceway!
By Dale R. Erdmann

September 18, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. It was season championship time for three divisions that compete at Lake Geneva Raceway.   Zac Deeringer of McHenry, Illinois dropped out early in the 30 lap feature for the McHenry Limo super stock, that was won by John Janssen of Genoa City. Finishing nineteenth, Deeringer won his first title of his career here.

Scott Poritz of Burlington finished tenth, in the 30 lap feature, that was the closest contest of the evening, as Mike Lange of West Allis won. This gave Poritz his third sportsman crown here. Gary Krueger of Milton scored a third place, in a 15 lap feature, as Jeff Conn won his first career feature. Krueger who raced here in the 70's and early 80's, has won his first championship in the Wisconsin Allison Legacy series. In the most controversial feature of the season, Brad Durbin of Lyons, grabbed his fourth 30 lap super late model feature.

The Super Stock main event started twenty cars with Jim Hughes in front, the first three laps, the caution appeared for a solo spin by fast timer Shane Bishop, with Hughes heading to the pits for some unknown reason. Jeremy Tess and Jeff Lorenz battled for that top spot, with Dan Huber close behind. Lorenz slipped in front, with Rick Corso trying to get around Tess and Huber. It was a side by side action, as John Janssen, Jerry Cowan and Doug Peterson crept behind Corso. By lap twelve, Janssen moved into third, then second two laps later.

Corso didn't let Janssen out of his sights, dropping Tess to fourth, on lap sixteen, with just ten laps to go, the field was tight, as Lorenz maintained the lead. By lap twenty two, Janssen started to put the pressure on the leader. Dicing for that top spot, the lead changed numerous times a lap.

Then on lap twenty five, Janssen inched ahead. But lap twenty seven, Lorenz tried to move in front, one more time, but at the wire, Janssen was the leader. Those final three laps san everyone trying to move up, as Janssen crossed the line first, Lorenz, Corso, Adam Regnier, Peterson, Tess, Huber, Troy Weber, John Maki and Marry Robb rounded out the top ten.

Jerry Freeman held the lead, just one lap of the sportsman feature, before Monty Coffman led lap two. Then Mike Lange charged in front, with LeRoy Potter at his side. Rick Corso, Scott Poritz and Joe Francisco were next. The battle for second was intense, as Lange was in complete command of the top spot. Coffman spun on lap thirteen, stopping the race for the first time.

Corso and Potter swapped second too many times to count, but it was getting physical, as Potter bounced off the wall, never losing an inch to Corso. Then Poritz made contact with Potter, causing a hard wall run. Potter escaped injury, as he and Poritz started at the back again. Lange forged in front at the drop of the green, with Corso now at his side. Leading laps sixteen through nineteen, Lange who won his first feature afew weeks ago looked impressive.

But Corso came in front on lap twenty, then Lange moved back in front one lap later. Fast qualifier, Brian Baker joined the battle on lap twenty two, with Mike Monroe, Mike DeKeuster and Landry Potter all right there. Coffman spun again, stopping the race for the final time, as lap twenty two ended. On the restart, Corso got under the leader, with Chris Wangrow charging past Landry Potter.

Corso led one more lap before Lange went in front for the remainder of the event. It went right down to the wire, as Lange was the winner, Corso held back Baker, with DeKeuster, Wangrow in a near photo finish for fourth and fifth. L. Potter was sixth, as Jerry Hansche in his first appearance of the season next, Patrick Marcott, LeRoy Potter and Poritz rounded out the top ten.

The super late model feature took twenty minutes to get through the first four laps. Tensions were high, as Terry Patnode was in the best spot, way out front, each time there was a problem. Garrett Fait who lost a radiator during one of those melees was back for the green, never missing a lap, after quick work by his crew. But there were problems, as Fait was sent back to the pits because of the leaking radiator. Each restart, drivers from the rear moved up, after the cone was put on the track, and drivers chose their lane, taking a chance to advance. First Jamie Wallace challenged Patnode, then after the second and third false start, Al Schill pulled off a great move, slipping in front on lap five. Wallace followed, with Patnode, Joe Fisher and Brad Durbin next.

Visiting Toby Roth spun, stopping the race on lap twelve. Durbin moved into third right behind Wallace and Schill, at the next green. The next caution came on lap seventeen, on the restart Schill had Durbin inside and Wallace outside. After two warning from the starter "to pick a lane" Schill wnet inside, gambling that Wallace couldn't get around him. Schill received the black flag and Durbin became the new leader. Schill's mount stalled on lap twenty three bringing out the final caution.

Durbin held back numerous challenges, winning the event ahead of Randy Rodgers, Wallace, Kent Burkoth, Patnode, Mike Simon Jr., Ronnie Darnell and Fisher. Schill was credited with last place. This brought his 165 point advantage going into tonights program, to now just 80 points over Rodgers, with the championship race next Saturday night.

Randy Coates rammed into the back to Ken Wills mount causing a complete restart in the Wisconsin Allison Legacy series feature. Doug Reichley paced the field during that confusion. Then on lap seven, Jim Cheski and Joe McClosky tangled, this caused the final caution. Reichley again grabbed the lead, holding it until lap nine, when Jeff Conn moved in front.

Dicing for a new spot, the contest went on to a close finish as Conn held back Gary Krueger, Scott Nicoson, fast timer Erik Darnell, Casey Darnell and Reichley completing the top six.
