Lake Geneva Raceway championship!

By Dale R. Erdmann

September 25, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. The weather was perfect for the twenty fourth weekly Saturday night race program at Lake Geneva Raceway. Al Schill, a 34 year veteran in stock car racing, won his third super late model crown, in three years, as the Franklin driver held the point lead all season, winning the track title by 130 points.

1999 Lake Geneva Raceway Super Late Model Champion - #14 Al Schill Sr.

92699a.jpg (16848 bytes) Al Schill Sr. (#14) took home a win in tonight's Super Late Model main event and sealed his third consecutive championship here at Lake Geneva Raceway.  Schill had paced the point standings all season long and held off some determined challenges by his rivals to score the crown.

Schill finished second in the 40 lap feature, but won the event, after the winner was disqualified, after a post race inspection. Chad Ross of Grayslake, Illinois, won his first LGR sport truck championship after winning another feature race. Zac Deeringer of McHenry, IL. the 1999 super stock champion, won another 20 lap feature. Jeff Way of Burlington won his first career 20 lap feature for the legend cars.

Brian Ulrich shot off his pole starting position in the Super Late Model main event, with Mike Simon Jr., Mike Simon, Russ Blakley and Bob Moeller, all right there. On lap four, Brad Durbin, the fast qualifier dropped out, while running mid pack. With the green flag shown to the field, once again, Ulrich held the lead for three more laps before Simon Jr. moved by. Lap eleven slowed the pace again, as Garrett Fait and Blakley tangled.

Simon led the next lap, before Kent Burkoth charged out front. Right behind the top three, Billy Baumeister, Al Schill and a persistent Moeller were trying to move up. On the move was visiting Jeff Holtz, who had to come through the semi, to start last. By lap fifteen, Holtz was seventh, with Schill now working on Baumeister for second. Dicing back and forth, the runner up spot was the race, as Burkoth increased his lead to nearly three lengths, just before Landry Potter spun in front of the large crowd on hand, on lap eighteen.

On his way to the front!  Al Schill Sr. (#14) passes Danny Darnell (#85) on his way to victory in the Super Late Model feature.   Darnell would finish second in the main event and third overall in the point standings. 92699f.jpg (13514 bytes)

Burkoth lost his advantage with the yellow, while Baumeister and Schill were at it again for second. Danny Darnell moved into fourth on lap twenty, with Urich still holding onto fifth. On lap twenty five, first timer, Charlie Thon Jr. flew off the track, bringing the race to a halt. The action stopped two laps later for another tangle, wiping out Burkoth's lead one more time. Darnell had just got past Schill, when the race stopped for the final time.

92699g.jpg (7353 bytes) Dirt tracking on asphalt?  Former dirt racer Joe Fisher (#2) got sideways, while Landry Potter (#22) does a four wheel drift sliding by on the inside.  Potter would continue and place in sixth in the Super Late Model main event.

Those next twelve laps were true racing, as Burkoth easily held the lead, Schill took second with Darnell, Baumeister, Denny Hiffman, Holtz, a recovered Potter, Randy Rodgers who gave Schill a run for that point championship, then Bill Kloster and Moeller rounding out the top ten, as all running cars finished on the lead lap, with just two cars in the pit area.

A post race inspection dropped Burkoth from the pay sheet. Schill who had finished second and became the winner of the event.

Icing on the cake!  Chad Ross (#3) scored the evening feature win in the Sport Truck division and the victory assured him of his first championship in the division. 92699j.jpg (16715 bytes)

Vincent Merry paced the first two laps of the tight running sport truck championship field, before Todd Ross inched in front. It looked like a victory for Todd, but a lap fifteen caution, sent the leader to the pits for some unknown reason. Chad Ross became the leader, after running second for the last four laps. Chad Ross won the event and the championship, with Curt Matson, Jim Olson, Merry, Bill Vankirk and fast timer Jim Phillips next.

92699h.jpg (8880 bytes) Not the place to meet!  Todd Ross (#5) looped his ride and was tagged by Curt Mason (#00).  Mason still managed a good run finishing second in the feature race.

Greg Janukta slipped in front of the twenty car super stock feature, with Adam Mass, Jeremy Tess, Tom Fay and Scott Eggebrecht all over the leader. Right behind this group, Marty Robb, rookie Dan Huber and Mike Kooi were trying to gain a position. Tess inched into second on lap four, with a very tight field behind him. By lap ten, Janutka had Eggebrecht at his side, with Robb, Tess, Dave Melahn in the Adam Regnier ride and Huber next.

92699d.jpg (13433 bytes) Eventual winner Zac Deeringer (#02) slips pass Jeff Lorenz (#25) in McHenry Limo Super Stock action.  Deeringer went on to earn the win, while Lorenz would fade to a tenth place finish.

Tess dropped out for some unknown reason, as this contest would go non stop. Robb scrambled into second on lap eleven, with everyone dicing for a new spot, on lap thirteen there was a new leader as Robb took the point. Meanwhile, point champion Zac Deeringer quickly got around Huber, Melahn, Eggebrecht and Janutka. Jerry Cowan wasn't going to be left behind, following Deeringer's quest to the front.

Side by Side!  The McHenry Limo Super Stocks are know for their close quarters racing and here Troy Weber (#14) and Adam Regnier (#73) display some of the competitive action in the class. 92699e.jpg (11007 bytes)

Robb and Deeringer swapped the lead for those final five laps. But with just one lap to go, Deeringer wasn't going to be denied, grabbing the lead for good, as Robb, Cowan, Shane Bishop, Eggebrecht, Melahn, Greg Peterson and John Maki completed the top eight, in another great race.

92699b.jpg (15100 bytes) Zac Deeringer (#02) continued the theme of champions winning their feature race this evening as he rolled to victory in the Super Stock division earning him his first ever track championship here at Lake Geneva Raceway.

Sam Saccullo led the first lap of the legends feature, before Jeff Way charged in front. Until a lap telve spin by Bob Sambois, stopped the action. B.J. Goodin came along side the leader, but after some contact, the challenger flew onto the infield and Way beat Gary LaMonte, fast timer Matt Kocourek, Curt Gnatzig, Clayton Kruse and Tim Zellmer across the line for the top six finishers, in another close contest.
