O'Doul's October Classic cut short by rain and snow!!
By Dale R. Erdmann

October 3, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. For the first time in the nine year history of the O'Doul's October Classic, rain mixed with snow helped official to cancel day number three of the states largest paved track race show.

10299b.jpg (15415 bytes) There was a new look to victory lane for the October Classic when events got underway as track photographers Charlie and Linda Doerr put together a festive fall theme for the winner's circle.  Unfortunately rain and snow forced the cancellation of events on Sunday after a clear and cold evening Saturday.

With over 200 cars in the pit area, it was hard for the officials to cancel this show. With over 200 phone calls between 11 am and Noon, race fans didn't want to see this show to be canceled. The program will not be rescheduled, due to Octoberfest in LaCrosse then a scheduled event here and the Goblin 250 Midwest Enduro series race on October 24th.

This would have mean, October 30th as the earliest date. The weather could have be great, but it could be like today.

October 2, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. If race fans thought Friday night was cold, not compared to Saturday night, with a brisk Northeast wind blowing into the grandstand, a good size crowd came out for the O'Doul's October Classic, first night . Nearly 200 race cars jammed the pit area, qualifying, heat races, the Wisconsin Mini sport trucks complete program and the clash of champions for the super lates ran off before 10:00 pm.

He wanted to race!  Landry Potter (#22) battles with Jeff Storm during the Super Late Model race of champions in the photo above.  Potter would go on to win the event
and visit the winners circle.   Potter also topped his heat race with a strong performance.  There is no doubt Potter is one driver who would have liked to see the bad weather stay away!

The mini sport truck feature got off to a rocky start, as trucks spun in turn three before a lap could be completed. On the restart, Mike Schneider, quick timer John Meidam, Robyn Wussow and Scott Bushman flew to the front. For the next fourteen laps, Schneider and Meidam diced for the lead, with Wussow and later Pete Zarnoth just waiting for any mistake, as this foursome went four and five deep for the top spot. At the checkered, only one truck was lapped, with Meidam scoring another clean sweep of the action, Schneider, Wussow, Zarnoth, Todd Verhagen and Dean Vixmer rounded out the top six, in a real close contest.

10299i.jpg (10775 bytes) Newly crowned 1999 Late Geneva Raceway Super Late Model Champion battled with Brad Durbin (#57) and Mike Simonsen in the Race of Champions.

Jeff Storm slipped in front of the twenty lap clash field of twelve cars in Super Late Model action, with Rick Corso, Landry Potter, Al Schill and Chad Baker looking at toward the top. Potter secured first place by lap five, with Conrad Morgan, just in front of Schill, with Storm still second. Morgan and Schill got together on lap eleven stopping the intense pace. Schill, Morgan and Chuck Duncan pitted with only Morgan returning.

Before the weather got bad, Jeff Lorenz   (#25) managed a trip to the winners circle after topping a the Street Stock dash event on Saturday. 10299c.jpg (16458 bytes)

There was another halt to the action on the white flag lap, stopping half the field in their tracks. Potter won the event, with Fran Prestay nipping Storm, Shane Bishop was next, as Morgan recovered for fifth and Bobby Gash sixth.

Former Street Stock champ, Tommy Nevoso (#84), made a rare appearance this year when he stopped in to run with the Super Stocks.  Nevoso ran well taking his heat race.  In the right photo he is shown passing Tony Koepke (#32) on the way to the win.

The one on one competition was canceled due to the cold and lack of entries.
