Skip Martin tops weekly finale at Lake Geneva Raceway!
By Dale R. Erdmann

October 9, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. The 22nd. annual "Run what ya brung" race program at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night ended the 1999 season of Neekly shows. The large crowd was blessed by ideal weather, as Skip Martin of McHenry, IL. a top ten runner at LaSalle speedway, a UMP dirt track, clean swept his A class division. Bart Reinen of Jefferson, a regular at Jefferson Speedway in their late models, won the B class feature. John Maki, part of the Antioch, IL connection, won his third feature of the season, on a last lap thriller, in the C class cars. Mike Kooi of Island Lake, IL won the D class feature, in a new race car, he just purchased on the Internet.

The show was marred by a last lap feature race accident in the D class cars, involving Bill Carrol, in a four cylinder car and Vincent Merry, in a sport truck. Carrol got turned around, right at the start/finish line, hitting the wall very hard, backwards. Carrol was transported to Elkhorn Hospital for a check up and observation. At noon on 10/10/99 his condition was not known.

The A feature for 30 laps got off to a rocky start, as Joe Fisher and Pat Haney tangled. Then the second try for green flag lap, Mike Simon Jr. and Jeff Bodendorfer got together, after pole sitter Tony Kautz nearly stopped when the caution reappeared and Mike simon Jr.'s night was over.

On the next green Mike Simon shot out front, with Terry Patnode right on his tail. Landry Potter, Gary Ravin, Danny Darnell and Larry Surleta were next. By lap ten, Patnode was just ahead of Simon, with Darnell just looking for an opening, within three laps Darnell became the third leader of the fast paced event.

But right behind the new leader, was Skip Martin, with Patnode third. At lap fifteen, the top two raced side by side for the lead. Martin crept in front once at lap seventeen, but Darnell charged right back in front. Then lap eighteen, Martin inched ahead again. For the next twelve laps it was too close to call, as Martin pulled off the victory, using the lapped cars to his advantage. Potter claimed third, Fisher was fourth, with Patnode and Surleta next, in a great race, once that first lap was finally completed.

Todd Peterson led the first lap of the B feature for twenty five laps, before Marty Robb slipped in front, with Peterson and Jim Imme tussling for second. Eddie LeMay Jr. got around Peterson, with Jerry Freeman trying to move up. Imme moved around Robb on lap five, but two laps later Robb was back in front. Reinen wasted little time grabbing the lead on lap nine. Suddenly Bill Drefahl, who raced in LaCrosse last night, broke out of the pack and set his sights on the leader. Reinen came home the winner, with Drefahl, Steve Coil, Freeman, Robb and Mark Gees. The field saw a very close runner up through sixth, in another good race.

Scott Peterson jumped out front of the C main, with Dan Huber at his side. Huber had just taken over the lead before Shane Bishop and Chris Huenink tangled, bringing out the first of two caution flags. Huber claimed the top spot until lap eight, as Jermey Tess got under the leader. Just like a streak John Maki was along side Huber. These two raced for the next four laps, side by side, before Maki secured second, just before the final caution, caused by a fire in the pits.

Tess moved back in front, with Maki on a mission. Jim Holzinger and Huber were still within shooting distance. With only three laps  left Tess could feel the heat, as Maki raced along side the leader. Looking for his first career feature win Tess would come back in front at the wire until that final lap. Coming down the back shoot, Maki was just about a foot from the lead. Coming off turn four Tess got a little wider than the last few laps and Maki nipped Tess at the wire, in a great race. Following this twosome, was Holzinger, Huber, Greg Peterson and Kautz completing the top six.

Aaron Willims paced the field for just one lap before Chad Ross got the lead for the next five laps in the D class feature. Bill Carrol took over the top spot on lap six and seven, until Todd Ross got around the leader. Before three laps were completed Mike Kooi was knocking on the front door. Taking the lead and then the win Kooi held back numerous challenges from Chad Phillips, Todd Ross, Jim Olson and Matt Nickel. At the line, Vincent Merry and Bill Carrol got together, with Carrol being taking to the hospital, with unknown injures.

In the A cars , Martin had fast time, with a 15.245 seconds. The heat went to Jeff Bodendorfer and dash to Martin. The B class, fast time, was Eddie LeMay Jr. with a 17.841 seconds. Heats went to Marty Robb and Bill Drefahl. In the C Class, Jim Holzinger in a Pro 4, took quick time, with a 17.997 seconds. Heats went to Shane Bishop and Jermey Tess. The D class fast timer was Chad Phillips, with a 19.308 seconds. Heats went to Jim Olson and Mike Kooi.
