As a request of the late drivers family, former pit crew and friends the day before Mothers Day would be the first to be annual "Al Schill Jr. Memorial", feature race. The closest date to that first feature win.
Winning the event super late model event for 30 laps , was Danny Darnell, a second generation driver from Park City, Illinois. Other feature winners were McHenry IL. driver, Zac Deeringer, in the 20 lap Super Stock feature race. It was a clean sweep for double duty driver Bob Koidahl from Pell Lake, taking fast time, winning the heat and the 15 lap feature in the Sport Truck division.
The 18 car super late model feature saw Bob Moeller grab the early lead, with Billy Skinner Jr. and Brad Durbin right on his tail. Quick timer Randy Rodgers was on the move, capturing third by lap seven. Durbin scooted inside the leader, one lap late , then moving in front before that lap ended.
Visiting driver Chad Barker, in the former Schill Jr. championship car was having a tough time with Tim Lynn Jr., both trying to maintain sixth place. Danny Darnell slipped under both, then setting his sights on Skinner.
It took Rodgers five more laps to get past Moeller with Durbin still in command of the top spot. A Mark Simonsen solo spin on lap sixteen, created an even tighter field on the restart, as the crafty drivers used the line up cone to choose what they thought was the best line for the restart.
It wasn't a pretty sight, as the green came out, as cars scattered everywhere, Scott Applin spun off of the track in turn three. Then the next try saw Denny Hiffman receive extensive damage when someone brake checked the field. Then Skinner spun, taking Al Schill with him. Schill never returned after that incident.
On the next restart, Rodgers darted under Durbin, as the pair entered turn one, taking over that top spot on the third try for the lead lap eighteen. Darnell saw the opportunity for advancement, securing second as Durbin remained wide. On lap twenty six Russ Blakley spun, causing Hiffman to s[in with him. The four lap dash for all the marbles, sa Rodgers about three lengths in front. Darnell, Durbin, Landry Potter, Kent Burkoth a recovering Skinner and Lynn under a blanket.
A post race inspection dropped Rodgers to last. Darnell moved to the top spot, with Moeller and Barker rounding out the top eight.
The 20 car super stock feature san a rocky start, as Nick Nelson got the worse deal, from contact with Scott Peterson, that incident however didn't produce a caution. Katie Taylor smoothly moved in front, with John Maki, Ed Kachinski, Denny Norton Jr. and Jeff Lorenz all over the top spot pilot.
Bob Koidahl flew off the track, causing the lone caution on lap six. This really tightened the field, as Taylor stayed in front just on more lap, before Norton took over the lead. Deeringer was right along side Taylor by the end of lap nine. Then Mike Kooi and Rick Corso moved in on this cluster. Maki had Marty Robb right there as the side by side action continued.
Deeringer inched into second, with just two more laps in the books, there was another new leader as Deeringer took over the top spot. On lap fourteen, Corso's pressure on Taylor paid off, securing third. During those next five laps only one race car was lapped, with Deeringer coming home the winner. Norton was next, with John Janssen nipping Corso for third. Point leader Adam Regnier managed to take fifth in this extremely tight race, that produced only one slowdopwn. Taylor, Robb and Jerry Cowan were next.
In the Sport Truck feature another opening lap melee sent trucks spinning everywhere, after Chad Ross got crossed up while going four wide. R.J. Ross led three laps before Chad Ross moved in front for another two, then R.J. came back around him.
With five laps to go, Koidahl inched in front of the pack. R J Ross didn't make the win easy, getting under and sometimes around the leader throughout the conclusion of the event. Koidahl came across the line ahead of R.J. Ross, Chad Ross, Chad Phillips, Kurt Matson and first timer driver Bill Vankirk.
This Saturday, four divisions of action will be here, as the sport trucks, the super
lates, super stocks are joined by a special Wisconsin Allison Legacy Series invitational.
