Skinner scores an impressive win at LGR!
By Dale R. Erdmann

May 22, 1999; Lake Geneva, WI. - The sixth night of stock cars this season at Lake Geneva Raceway and the largest crowd of the young season was on hand. Billy Skinner Jr. of Pell Lake scored his first super late model victory of the year in an interesting race. Adam Regnier of McHenry, Illinois won the 20 lap super stock feature, while James Swan of Lake Geneva won the last lap dash in the sportsman 20 lap feature and B.J.  Goodin won the 20 lap Legend feature, giving race fans four great main events. Dave Lohse beat Bob Buehrer in the final two rounds of one on one competition.

Billy Skinner Jr. of Pell Lake, WI. tops Lake Geneva Lates!

52299a.jpg (14978 bytes) Billy Skinner Jr. ran a limited schedule at Lake Geneva last season, but this year he appears to be on track to running a full season.   This evening he made his way back to victory lane in the Super Late Model division.

Russ Blakley raced side by side with Brian Ulrich for the lead during the first three laps of the Super Late Model main event. Joe Fischer slipped into second on lap four. With Ulrich in front, Mike Simon Sr. was watching for just the smallest mistake with Larry Surleta right behind him.

On lap seven, Denny Hiffman went around in turn three, causing the first restart. This brought the parade lap like racing to start all over again, as Ulrich had Fisher along side, looking just like they were glued together.

Fischer inched in front on lap nine. But during the next three laps Ulrich diced for that front spot over and over again. Then Ulrich had something let loose entering turn three, sixteen drivers behind him did everything they could to miss each other.

With some bent sheet metal, everyone came back except Ulrich and Blakley. On the restart, fast qualifier Randy Rodgers shot past Fischer, but Jamie Wallace and Mike Simon Jr. got together in turn three, stopping the race for the final time. Wallace came back before anyone completed the next green flag lap, but dropped out with engine problems two laps later.

Two of the most tenacious competitors at Lake Geneva Raceway are Super Late Model drivers Randy Rodgers (#14) and Billy Skinner Jr. (#47).  This evening Skinner was just a little more determined and would up beating Rodgers to the line for the feature win. 52299b.jpg (9220 bytes)

With Rodgers running away with this race, eyes were on second place, as Fischer had Billy Skinner Jr., Jeff Storm and Al Schill all over him. Kent Burkoth last weeks feature winner, joined the battle, with Skinner getting under Fischer on lap fifteen. Schill who won the semi, after not qualifying, started last in the eighteen car field, started challenging Skinner on lap nineteen. The pace was intense, with the top ten, still along side each other.

Danny Darnell and Brad Durbin got around Storm, with Rodgers starting to feel the heat on lap twenty four. The field was tight with just six laps to go, as Skinner challenged Rodgers for the lead. The pair diced for that top spot for the next two laps, with Schill, Burkoth and Darnell right there.

Then Durbin crept under Darnell, while Skinner was inching ahead for the lead.. Rodgers wasn't going to lose this one, coming back, one more time. However Skinner fought back, moving out front on lap twenty seven. Once in front, Skinner chose the high line, and it looked like Rodgers would again charge in front.

With the white flag out, the top eight positions were too close to call. Skinner wasn't intimidated, holding onto that outside groove, scooting across the wire just in front of Rodgers. Schill took third with Burkoth fourth, Durbin, Darnell, Storm and Fran Prestay, who was involved in that lap eleven incident completed the top eight.

The non stop super stock feature, brought Jerry Cornelison out front as the double greens flew. Mike Kooi, Greg Peterson, Todd Peterson and Bert Getchell were scrambling for second. Greg Peterson moved into the lead on lap four, with Cornelison coming back in front on lap six. Kooi slipped past Greg Peterson, with Todd Peterson, along side.

52299c.jpg (13926 bytes) Adam Regnier (#73) came home with a very important feature win in the McHenry Limo Super Stock division.  Regnier's victory netted him a very slim 15 point lead in the standings for the class, over Zac Deeringer who led the standings heading into the evening.

Another new leader came on lap eight, as Kooi managed to take it away from Cornelison. Todd Peterson grabbed second on lap ten, with Adam Regnier now in the top five. Another intense battle was brewing , with Marty Robb now shooting into third on lap eleven. It looked like Robb was on a mission, taking over second two laps later, then he became the leader, with five laps to go.

But Regnier wasn't going to be denied, moving up quickly and along side of Robb, then becoming the fifth and final leader of the event on lap seventeen. The race was won by Regnier, with Robb, Zac Deeringer, Kooi, Jerry Cowan, Troy Weber, John Janssen and Todd Peterson rounding out the top eight. The Street Stocks had run green to checkered now for the second week in a row in their feature race.

Which way to go?  Shane Bishop (#17) continues in the right direction, while a few fellow Super Stock competitors try out different ways to navigate Lake Geneva Raceway.  Bishop seemed to have the right idea as he won the semi-feature and later came back to post a tenth place finish in the main event. 52299e.jpg (8121 bytes)

Another non stop main, was the sportsman division as Rick Rowlett jumped out front of the 16 car field, holding onto the lead for just one lap, when Brad Troxel moved around him. LeRoy Potter charged to the inside, letting Troxel know he was there, with Scott Korner, Monty Cauffman and James Swan next.

On lap six Potter slipped in front, with Cauffman next in line. One lap later Potter ducked into the pits for some unknown reason making Cauffman the new leader. Troxel, Korner and now Scotty Poritz were next. The battle throughout the field, gave fans some great racing action, as now Poritz came along side Cauffman on lap eleven. Two laps later there was another new leader as Poritz took the top spot, with Swan second. From the rear, Eric Roberts finally made it to fifth with five laps to go.

It looked like Poritz would pull off his first win of the season, but Swan moved to his inside, as these two drivers diced back and forth for the remaining four laps. As the white flag was displayed, contact was made between the top two and Swan moved in front, with Poritz left rear tire going down. At the wire, Swan was the winner, with Roberts nipping Poritz for second, as Cauffman, Korner, Brian Baker, Dan Erikson and Patrick Marcott finished extremely close.

Ric Mattie led the first lap of the Legends 20 lap feature, before Pat Lawlor moved in front, for another lap. Then Clayton Kruse slipped in front until lap twelve.  That's when the winningist driver here in the Legend cars, Curt Gnatzig finally got around, and took the lead.

52299d.jpg (12382 bytes) B.J. Goodin (#114) found the fast line around Lake Geneva Raceway's third-mile paved oval, outrunning a strong field of Legend cars to take the feature victory.

It looked like another Gnatzig victory would be coming, but on lap seventeen BJ Goodin used a lapped car to his advantage, taking the lead and the win four laps later. Gnatzig, Kruse, Tom Pirkel, fast timer Matt Kocourek, Al Smith, Gary Lamonte and Herman Greinig completing the top eight.
