Schill, Norton Jr. and Loppnow win rain delayed Lake Geneva Features!

By Dale R. Erdmann

June 7, Lake Geneva, WI.

Remember when you mom would say, "Just wait, and something good is going to come, to those who wait". Well, officials at Lake Geneva Raceway waited for the skies to clear and Saturday nights weekly race program, sponsored by R & R Trucking of Crystal Lake and Summitt, IL, along with All Modes Trucking of Waukegan, IL, came off, with lots of help from fans in their street cars and then the Street Stock drivers went to work putting the finishing touches on the paved oval.

Al Schill Sr. of Franklin, WI has been the man to beat in the Super Late Model division at Lake Geneva Raceway. Schill took his fourth feature win of the season on Saturday night after starting at the tail of the field. Schill is the current point leader in the division.

Al Schill of Franklin who started deal last, after an early lap two incident, won his fourth feature in the Super Late Model division. Denny Norton Jr. of McHenry, IL won his fourth main of the year in the Herb's Street Stock division and Paul Loppnow of Burlington won his second Performance Unlimited Mid-American/Sportsman feature of the season.

Mike Simon charged out front of the 18 car Super Late Model feature, with Terry Patnode right at his side. As Patnode inched out front on lap two, a caution came out for Brad Durbin, Ronnie Darnell, Schill and Mark Hartline's get together. Simon again took command, with Patnode, Billy Baumiester, Kent Burkoth and Jamie Wallace trying to gain positions On lap six, Burkoth and Wallace tangled, slowing the event one more time.

Dennis Vito (#21) had a strong run, placing fifth in the main after running in the top five the entire race. Kent Burkoth was having a strong run until a accident early in the feature event

That yellow was all Patnode needed, taking the lead on lap seven, one lap later Simon, Baumiester, Eddie May in his first appearance of the season and Mike Simon Jr tangled. Baumeister was the only one back for the restart, as Patnode moved out front again. Bobby Giers, visiting John Nutley and Dennis Vito were next. The grueling pace left for very little movement in the pack. Only Schill and Nutley tries some slick maneuvers to the inside to attempt to move up.

From lap ten through 13, Schill and Mark Simonsen put on a show for fifth. Schill finally got under Simonsen. He nearly lost it however coming off turn two while working on Nutley. In the meantime Patnode was out to win the feature. The final caution appeared on lap 23, as Burkoth's brief reappearance saw loose sheet metal drop onto the track.

Patnode mastered the restart, holding his own as Schill dropped Nutley to fourth and then advanced past Giers to find himself in second after a good battle. It was still Patnode with four laps remaining when he went too deep into turn two, Schill ducked deeper towards the inside taking the lead of the event. Schill hung on to win this one, with Patnode taking second, Giers was third, Nutley fourth, with Vito fifth and Simonsen sixth at the line.

Lyle Messinger slipped in front of the Street Stock contest, with Scott Peterson, Jerry Cowan and Terry Hilgendorf tussling for second. Competition was fierce, as Cowan jumped into the second position on lap four. However just two laps later Scott Kuxhouse was right there looking to advance to the runner-up position.

Hobby Stock racing action!! It does not get any closer than this! Here Dennis Carlton (#18), leads a pack that includes Zac Deeringer (#02), Denny Norton Jr. (#96) and Scott Kuxhouse (#57). These guts have been racing three weeks straight, this closely without a caution in their feature race!!

By lap ten Kuxhouse was all over Cowan who was having problems holding a line finally surrendering the runner-up spot to Kuxhouse. Two laps later Kuxhouse moved in on the leader Messinger and on lap 15 crept out front to pace the event. Dennis Carlton came out of nowhere to move into second with Zac Deeringer and Norton Jr. battling for third.

On lap 19, for the first time in four weeks a yellow flag appeared in the Street Stock main for a tangle between Messinger and Cowan. This created a green, white and checkered scenario for the restart, that the crowd would love, as Kuxhouse stayed out front until turn three of the final lap when Norton Jr. grabbed the lead and the win. Kuxhouse, Carlton, Adam Regnier and Peterson rounded out the top five at the stripe.

Paul Loppnow of Burlington, WI, took the win and the point lead in the Mid-American/ Sportsman division. Loppnow now heads up the points over defending champion Rick Corso.

Dan Erickson led the Sportsman main event until lap ten, surviving two caution periods, before Brian Baker took over the top spot. Within the next four laps, Loppnow was up to, and then under the leader to take the front spot on lap 14.

It wasn't an easy win, but Loppnow held off his challengers, Baker was second, with Joe Fransisco, Shane Bishop, Donny Kachelmeier and Jerry Hansche taking the top spots.

Next Saturday evening is Lynch Motors of Burlington Night, which presents the Mid-American Point Series Program. In addition are the Super Late Models, along with Street Stocks and the rescheduled Wisconsin Allison Legacy Series. Time trials are at 6:00 P.M. with the first race at 7:30 P.M. sharp.
