Mike Simon Jr. picked up his first Super Late Model win of the year at Lake Geneva Raceway. Simon took the lead from Joe Fischer and then held Mark Hartline to pick up the win. |
Brian Ulrich jumped out front of the 18 car Super Late Model feature, with Joe Fischer, Jim Kjellander and Dennis Vito right behind him. John Simon and Fran Prestay got together just as the lap ended, bringing out the only yellow of the event. Starter Dave Rex Jr. sent Ulrich to the rear, stating that he caused the melee. When the race restarted the new leader Fischer had Kjellander at his side, while Denny Hiffman, Mike Simon and Vito trailed right behind, with everyone dueling for the top spot.
By lap ten Simon was on the move, advancing to third by lap 11. Simon then moved alongside Kjellander one lap later. Simon inched away in second and by lap fifteen was along side the leader Fischer. Over the next few laps Simon and Fischer diced for the top spot, with both drivers leading part of each lap. Mark Hartline meanwhile was not letting the leaders getting away scooting alongside Hiffman who was running third on lap 17. On the very next lap Simon grabbed the top spot, as Hartline wrestled third from Kjellander on lap 20.
Three laps later Fischer dropped out for some unknown reason, as Hartline worked to erase the space between himself and the leader. With five laps to go Hiffman worked his way into third past Kjellander, while Mike Arnold followed Hiffman's every move to claim fourth.
At the checkered Simon came acrossed the line first for his first feature win of the season. Hartline was second, with Hiffman and Arnold a very close third and fourth. Kjellander finished just ahead of Billy Skinner Jr. who claimed fifth and sixth respectively.
With the double green flags displayed, the 18 car Street Stock feature got off to the same kind of shaky start as the Late Model main as Landry Potter, Todd Peterson and Mike Kooi got together before a lap could be completed. When things got underway Tom Fay and Bob Moeller dueled for the top spot with each driver leading a lap. Rookie Lyle Messinger moved around both of those drivers and into the lead on lap four.
Getting some good breaks and making some good moved, Potter was already up to third by the end of the fourth lap. By lap six Potter was alongside Messinger and a single lap later he became the new leader. Adam Regnier moved into the runner-up slot on lap nine. As arch rivals Potter and Regnier remained one and two, until the caution came out for Doug Peterson's radiator dumping water all over the tracks surface, causing fourth running Tommy Nevoso and Kooi to slide gently into the safety barrels at the edge of turn four.
This set up a three lap dash to the finish, Dennis Carlton flew by Regnier for second on the restart as Potter held the pace. Potter held on to win the event for his third victory of the season and stated, "It was better week, than the last one." after he had nearly flipped during last weeks feature event. "I didn't know Carlton was that close." he added. Regnier finished a strong third, Zac Deeringer was fourth, with Messinger and Denny Norton Jr. rounding out the top six.
It took Rolf Tillman only four laps to move in front of the XLC 102.3 Sport Truck feature, however Dan Ross came back to pace laps four and five. Then Tillman, who has won all but two feature this season, gained the top spot for good.
Ross worked on Tillman the next eight laps, sometimes edging in front but never leading at the stripe. The non-stop event was won by Tillman who recorded his 11th feature victory of the season, Butch Edwards Jr. nipped Ross for second, with last weeks feature winner Ron Ross taking fourth. Matt Koehn in his first truck ride was fifth and Frank Caravetta, who led the first lap of the event, finishing sixth.
The Rascal Outlaws showdown will be part of next week Saturday night's program and the Performance Unlimited Sportsman division will also join the program along with the Street Stocks and Super Late Models. The stock car oval track program on September 6th, will be followed by a Kart Racing program on Sunday Afternoon September 7th, as the River Valley Kart Club hosts a program beginning at 1:00 P.M.
