April 5, 1997; Lake Geneva, WI.
Yes, this might sound like a recap of the last 24 hours on the weather channel, but it's an inportant part of the story. Friday at the racetrack the weather was excellent, near 80 degrees, this is racing weather. But then cam Saturday, opening night at Lake Geneva Raceway. 29 miles down the road along the shores of Lake Michigan it's 46 degrees, fog, rain and wind. Here in the resort town of Lake Geneva no fog and a balmy 62 degrees, but then heavy rain and winds up to 45 miles per hour, knocked out the opening night of racing here.
Next Saturday night April 12th, a full program of Super Late Models, Herb's Street Stocks, Performance Unlimited Mid-American/Sportsman and Select Performance Legend cars will be on the card. Time trials begin at 6:00 PM, with the first race at 7:30 PM sharp.

The drivers have
another week to complete thier cars before the season
opener after this weeks races were washed out. Here an unidentified Super Late Model has another week to complete is lettering before racing begins. |
Judging by the number of cars opening night, the new Super Late Model division looks real good and so does the Street Stock division. Drivers from a three state area are expected to go for the first championship, since the Supers last ran on the old quarter-mile track in 1981. All but one of the former late model drivers that which competed here last season, are returning to take on the others in a field of over 35 competitors.
The Raceway is now a one-third mile progressively banked paved oval, just three minutes southeast of downtown Lake Geneva. It's located only 45 minutes from Milwaukee or Rockford, IL and just less than an hour from Chicago, IL or Madison,WI. Take Highway 50 or Highway 12 to Edwards Blvd and head south. The complex is located on Bloomfield Road. The track phone number is (414) 248-8566.
