Wallace Breaks Track Record and Wins First Super Late Model Feature!

By Dale R. Erdmann

May 3, Lake Geneva, WI.

Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake, the 1994 late model champion, won the 30 lap super late model feature race at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night. Wallace also shattered his own week old one lap qualifying mark, turning in a time of 16.407 seconds. Denny Norton Jr out of McHenry, Il, won the Herb's street stock 25 lap feature, his second of the season. Rolf Tillman of Woodstock, Il, won the 15 lap sport truck feature and Jeff Goodwin of Zion won the 10 lap Outlaw Rascal feature. A special added attraction with morning DJ "the Sharkman" from WLKG 96.1 FM proved to be exciting to some finishing seventh, in a field of 11, in the first heat. Denny Hiffman escaped injury when his super late model went full throttle into the wall, nearly destroying his mount.

Jamie Wallace of Pell Lake, WI had a very successful evening in the Super Late Model division. Capturing the 30 lap feature race and earlier breaking his own week old track record with a lap time of 16.407 seconds on the 1/3 mile progresivly banked asphalt oval.

Before the super late model feature was just one lap, Fran Prestay, Jim Kjellander, Bobby Giers, Brian Urlich, and Brad Durban got together in turn three. Damage to Giers and Kjellander cars left these two watching from the pits. Mike Simon darted out front with Chad Barker second, Billy Baumeister third and Kent Burkoth fourth. Barker looped it alone with everyone getting under or around him, in the tricky turn three. The yellow flew with everyone missing the stalled mount. Simon led the field but, one lap later, Burkoth was on the move securing the lead on lap 3.

John Nutley in his first appearance of the season was already running fifth by lap 4, with Billy Skinner Jr second and Simon. The top six were under a blanket as Burkoth remained out front. By lap 14, Skinner was along side the leader inching in front from time to time until the racing incident occurred between the top two. The final caution came out as Burkoth drove up onto the wall, then came back onto the track, spinning wildly, with Nutley spinning to avoid contact.

Burkoth's night was over, with Nutley and Skinner starting at the rear of the field. Wallace, who was running fourth, became the new leader. Once in front Wallace won the race over Al Schill, who chased the leader those last 13 non-stop laps. Ronnie Darnell was third, with Billy Baumeister, Fran Prestay and Mark Hartline rounding out the top six.

In the Street Stock feature, Todd Peterson grabbed the lead before Jerry Marsh took over on lap 2. Bob Koidahl moved under Peterson the next go round, as Doug Peterson spun in turn three bringing out the only yellow of the event. Jerry Cowan dropped down onto the infield for some unknown reason. On the restart, Marsh remained in command with Mike Kooi all over Koidahl for second.

Hobby Stock rookie driver Jerry Cowan keeps improving every night, in just the third week of competition he has made the fast dash with a third quick qualifying effort. In addition to the fine driving he has one of the sharpest looking Street Stocks at the track.

It was very tight as Adam Regnier moved into third on lap 10, then into the lead on lap 11. Within seconds Norton was on Regnier's bumper, 4 laps later there was another new leader. The race was far from over as second through 8th were up for grabs. Norton stayed in front of Regnier with Mark Swan third, Kooi fourth, Don Radke fifth, and Scott Kuxhouse sixth.

In the Sport Trucks division after Chad Ross' brief stay out front, Tillman took over the top spot. Quick qualifier, Dan Ross, moved out front on lap 6. Then Tillman came right back in front never to be headed at the climax, winning his second feature of the season over Dan Ross, Butch Edwards Jr, Ron Ross, Joel "the tinman" Filtz, and Chad Ross, in this close contest.

Goodwin led all 10 laps of the Outlaw Rascals feature with Jeff Phillips, Larry Roy, Jim Rieger, Butch Torkelson, and Rodney Van Rite.

This coming Saturday night, Rick and Lou's BF Goodrich super tire store in Crystal Lake, Il, will sponsor the super lates, street stocks, sportsman, and Select Performance Legend cars. The first 200 Moms will receive a rose for Mother's Day. Peterson Wholesale florist will bring in the flowers for this evening. Gates open at 5pm, time trials are at 6, and the first race at 7:30 sharp.
