July 5, 1998; Lake Geneva, WI. The second of the monthly small car championship series programs took place at Lake Geneva Raceway Sunday night. The popularity of the show increased as did the purse and close finishes.
Jeff Schultz of Silver Lake won his
second 15 lap feature in the mini-modifieds of the series. Kip Novotny of McHenry,
Illinois easily won the 18 lap Rascal Outlaw feature. Curt Gnatzig of Menomonee Falls
broke the streak for B.J. Goodin, winning his first 20 lap Legends car feature here this
season. Jocko Terralt won his first Bandolero features of the year. Mike Powell of Polo
,IL.
broke the track qualifying mark, with a time of 17.892 seconds, won his heat and the 12
lap feature, giving himself a clean sweep in Dwarf car competition. Rolf Tillman of
Woodstock,IL. won the 18 lap feature race for the sport trucks.
Hermie Schultz briefly led the mini-modified main event for three laps before a tire went
down putting
the elder family member out of the race. Duck Wack blasted in front, with Joe Christenbury
in second and Jeff Schultz already third. Wack and Christenbury swapped the lead for the
next six laps, with Schultz and Ken Johnson battling for third.
Lap ten , Christenbury charged in front, but Wack came right back laps eleven and twelve. Schultz moved around both cars on lap 13. Then Ken Johnson moved up, going too high in turn four, never challenging for the lead. On lap fifteen, Johnson looped it after one of those high risk adventures. This was the only caution of the race. On the restart, Schultz was the leader, winning the race just in front of Christenbury, Eric Rosemann, Wack, a recovering Johnson and new comer Joe Miller.
Track qualifying records were made in the mini modifieds, as Ken Johnson turned a 18.356 seconds. Rookie Dave Colletti in the Rascal Outlaws with a time of 17.290 seconds. John Safro in the Bandolero's with a 20.702 sec.
