For the second straight week, Danny Darnell make his way to victory lane after a Super Late Model feature at Lake Geneva Raceway. On this evening, smooth driving and avoiding trouble which befell his competitors was the trick to making it to the winners circle! |
Leading rookie in points driver Paul Loppnow moved out front of the 18 car super late model feature with Jim Kjellander, Mark Hartline and Fran Prestay hot on the trail. Hartline moved around Kjellander on lap two with Loppnow just in front. By lap four Al Schill was already up to fourth, with Ronnie Darnell third, but feeling the pressure.
On lap six coming into turn three, Loppnow and Hartline made contact, siding high into corner four Loppnow had Hartline to his left, as the leader tried to slow before the wall. That made Loppnow's mount turn left, crossing the track in front of the field.

| On track action!! In the right photo Ronnie Darnell (#58) tries to stay ahead of Denny Hiffman (#41) and Ronnie Darnell (#85) the eventual winner of the Super Late Model feature. In the right photo, track workers attend to the cars of Brad Durbin (#57) and Brian Ulrich (#23) after a hard crash in the heat race. | |
Brad Durbin found himself in the wrong place at the wrong time, getting clipped by the fallen leader. Durbin's car flew high into the air, racing full force into the wall. Durbin's mount was then hit from behind and the impact caused the wall to buckle. Durbin received bumps and bruises, but no serious injuries occurred. Drivers tried to avoid contact, but it was a the worst pile up of the season.
When the smoke cleared, Durbin's car was totally destroyed. Chuck Duncan received the most injures, but refused any treatment. Hartline saw the next green, leading four more laps before quick timer Randy Rodgers slipped in front. Al Schill didn't give Rodgers any breathing time, quickly grabbing second, the next go round.
It was a great show for the race fans, as Rodgers and Schill raced side by side. On lap 8, Denny Hiffman did a solo spin, with the caution coming out again. This gave Danny Darnell the break he needed, with the cone out, Darnell moved right behind Schill on the inside. Loppnow was now back to fifth, behind Harttine.
Again, Rodgers and Schill moved away from the pack, running side by side for that top spot. Third through ninth was too close to call, then came lap 24. Schill was just in front, but Rodgers led at the wire. Not lap twenty five however as the veteran driver Schill driver inched ahead, two laps later Schill was in front, as Rodgers drove into turn one, there was contact. Rodgers started to go around, nipping Schill in the left quarter.
Schill went around too, stopping the race one last time. The four lap dash saw Darnell hold back Hartline and Loppnow. With just one lap to go, Loppnow lost third to Prestay and a recovering Hiffman. At the wire Darnell won his second feature, with Hartline, Prestay, a recovering Hiffman, Loppnow and Mike Simon.

16 year old driver Bill Kloster was transported to Elkhorn Hospital, after being shook up in a racing incident on the pace lap of the semi feature. Kloster was treated and released.
Todd Peterson bolted in front of the 20 car super stock feature, with Shawn Donnelly, Katie Taylor and Willie Schumacher right behind. Jay Potter in his first appearance of the season, started third row outside charged in front on lap nine. Peterson had Adam Regnier right on his bumper by lap 10, with Schumacher still fourth.
From his seventh row starting spot, Janssen was on the move, picking off his competitors one or two a lap. With just six lap to go, Janssen was along side Potter for the lead on the next lap Janssen was the new leader. At the checkered Janssen took the win, with Regnier, Tommy Novoso, Potter, Schumacher and Peterson under a blanket.

In his first appearance in a few years, now driving a sportsman car, Bob Ropke led the first lap of the feature before Mike Lange inched in front. Dan Erikson and then Ropke caused the lap 6 and lap 8, cautions respectively, with their solo spins, just after Kevin Rybuck took over the top spot.
Two laps later, Clossey bolted out front, winning the event ahead of Jack Kossow, Rybuck, Brian Baker, Mike DeKeuster and Joe Francisco in another close contest.
