Defending Super Late Model champion Al Schill Sr. looks right at home in victory lane. In fact he's made more trips there than any other driver after a feature this season. Schill took home his fifth feature victory holding back Danny Darnell who was trying to win his third straight feature race. |
A moment of silence was taken for former hobby stock driver Bill Henry of Lake Geneva. Henry passed away unexpectedly on Thursday July 16th. 1998. Bill raced the very popular orange Smurfmobile, with the number 67 on it. Butch Edwards Jr. carried the black flag, as the crowd stood, just before race time.
Mike Simon Jr. Mark Simonsen and Ed Schneidwent dueled for the lead the first two laps, with Simon drawing the upper hand in the event. Just like that Schtll was up to fourth on lap five and two more laps, he became the new leader. Kent Burkoth wasn't content with third, as Schill inched ahead, the former sportsman driver slipped into second on lap nine. Third place was another hotly contested position, as Simon had Denny Hiffman all over him.
By lap fourteen, the field was again tight, as Ronnie and Danny Darnell joined the top six. Just before the half way signal, Burkoth moved inside Schill taking over the top spot for the next three laps. But again Schill wanted that top spot, racing side by side in a see saw battle for the lead. Schill regained the lead on lap 18.
The first caution came on lap twenty three, as Chuck Duncan flew onto the infield and Joe Fischer did a solo turn around in turn two. Now with the cone on the track, Schill took the inside, with Danny Darnell right behind him. This looked just like last weeks set up, but this time Darnell just couldn't get Schill. 16 year old Bill Kloster caused the next caution, with a spin in turn two. Then one more lap was completed before Mark Hartline looped it for the final slowdown.
Schill stayed just ahead of Darnell for that three lap dash for the win. Ronnie Darnell nipped Hiffman for third, with Burkoth and Landry Potter rounding out the top six.
Shawn Donnelly briefly led lap one of the twenty car Herb's Super Stock feature, before Teerry Hilgendorf got by. Then Willie Schumacher dove harder into turn one and slipped in front of the pack. Tom Fay running mid pack blew his radiator hose, slowing the race for a lengthy clean up. Then on lap ten, Hilgedorf blew his engine. Drivers went everywhere to avoid contact.
The final ten laps were awesome, as Schumacher looked like he'd win his first career feature. But Carlton wanted everyone to know that he was back, breezing in front on lap fifteen and then coming home to a win five laps later. Schumacher hung onto second in his best run to date, Zac Deeringer, driving rookie Marty Robb's mount, was third. Point leader John Janssen was fourth, with Don Radke fifth and John Maki sixth.
Jim Phillips led only two laps of the sport truck feature, before Chad Ross pulled his slick move, racing up the middle of the pack and into the lead on lap three. RJ Ross and Donnie Swiercz raced along side of each other for second the whole race. This kept point leader Rolf Tillman at bay until lap 13.
| First career win!! Chad Ross (#3) was all smiles as he made his way to victory lane and a visit with track trophy queen Sandra Simon. The win for Ross was his first feature checkered in the "XLC 102.3" Sport Truck division. | ![]() |
Chad Ross won the event, Tillman was second, Swiercz as third with Dave Shine, Jim Olson and RJ Ross next. Quick timer Butch Edwards Jr. dropped out while running third with fuel problems.
The Legacy feature brought numerous caution flags as it took thirty five minutes to run twenty laps.
On the final lap, it looked like Giers would win another feature . But Potter came along side, with Erik Darnell, the third car in. As the checkered came out Potter slipped down the middle, taking the win, with Giers to the left and Darnell to his right. Joe Beyer was fourth, with Jeff Goodwin fifth and first night driver Monty Coffman sixth.
| The original Darnell!! Veteran driver Bay Darnell, a former USAC Stock Car front runner can be found these days having fun behind the wheel of a Wisconsin Allison legacy series car. Tonight he took home a win in the heat race for the division. | ![]() |
