Burkoth, Janssen and Giers top LGR features!!

By Dale R. Erdmann

September 5, 1998; Lake Geneva, WI. - The weather was again perfect at Lake Geneva Raceway Saturday night, as Kent Burkoth of Pell Lake won his third 30 lap super late model feature of the year, on All Modes Transportation Night. John Janssen another local driver from Genoa City won the 20 lap Herb's super stock feature, taking over the very tight point lead .

lgr9823a.jpg (17466 bytes) Kent Burkoth earned his third Super Late Model feature victory of the season in thrilling fashion on All-Modes Transportation Night at Lake Geneva Raceway.  Burkoth ran wheel to wheel with point leader Al Schill Sr., during the final laps and  won the main event by less than a fender.

Bobby Giers of Ingleside, Illinois won another 20 lap Wisconsin Allison Legacy series feature race, after breaking his own qualifying record, with a time of 19.013. Randy Rodgers of Lake Geneva broke the super late model one lap record, with a 16.045 seconds.

Cameron Kuxhouse age 3, Jill Jordan age 5, Brittany Hayden age 8, Peter Springer age 9 and Dustin Holland age 12, received $222 each, after picking up a special coin in the annual coin grab . The extra money came from the pit area and spectators in the grandstand.

Landry Potter broke out of the pack, with the wave of starter Dave Rex Jr.'s double green flags, at the start of the super late model 18 car feature. Larry Los, Terry Patnode, Ronnie Darnell, Jamie Wallace and Mike Arnold were in hot pursuit. By lap six, Darnell was second, with the remainder of the field looking like a parade lap. Five more laps were completed with Potter comfortably in front, Darnell, Wallace, Al Schill and Arnold were on the move. From the back back of the pack, Danny Darnell was starting to move forward, with Los and Burkoth behind him.

Darnell's do battle!!  Danny Darnell (#85) shoots around the outside of cousin Ronnie Darnell (#58) in Super Late Model action. Oops too close!! Danny Darnell (#85) and Jamie Wallace (#87) got a bit too close while running for the lead resulting in this tangle.

On lap twelve Ronnie Darnell started to work on the leader , lap after lap of side by side racing ended on lap fifteen, when contact was made and Darnell went around. Potter and Darnell were regulated to the rear, as Wallace was now the leader, with Danny Darnell, Schill, Arnold, Burkoth and Los in that running order. Schill came alongside of Danny Darnell, but being second wasn't the way these two wanted the finish the race.

Darnell dove under Wallace, with Schill behind Wallace the leader of the event. This happened numerous times, between laps twenty and twenty five, but Wallace would always come right back.

Contact was made on lap twenty three, as Wallace and Darnell came off turn four, however the leader never faltered. Lap twenty seven things got a little too rough however as Darnell and Wallace tangled . The final caution quickly appeared, with everyone missing the two stalled race cars.

Schill who survived that melee was now the leader. With the cone out on the track, Schill was out front as Burkoth choose the inside and Randy Rodgers who was just waiting for this break was on the out side. The final green appeared and Schill shot out front coming into turn one Burkoth got under the leader as Rodgers followed Burkoth. With the crowd on their feet, now Arnold and a recovered Potter joined the fight for the front spot.

Behind the leader this battle kept fans on their feet as Al Schill Sr. (#14) runs wheel to wheel with Landry Potter (#22).  Mike Arnold (#64) follows behind looking for a way past the duo in front of him.  Schill had the best run of this group finishing second. lgr9823b.jpg (8307 bytes)

During these next three laps, it was a see saw battle for that top spot. Coming off turn two during the final lap Schill grabbed the lead back from Burkoth, then down the straightaway Burkoth came back in front. Coming off turn three and around turn four, Schill again edged ahead slightly. The drag race to the wire was great, with Burkoth coming across by his nose piece ahead of Schill for the win. Rodgers had Arnold along side finishing third and fourth while Potter was fifth, holding Los to a sixth place finish. Fran Prestay and Patnode rounding out the top eight.

Mark Hartline (#30) made the Super Late Model feature the hard way by winning the Semi-Feature and advancing to the main event.   Hartline then worked his way up to ninth in the main event before the final checkered flag fell. lgr9823e.jpg (14384 bytes)

Tim Muller charged out front of the 20-car super stock feature with rookie Jeff Lorenz , Mike Kooi, Bob Koidahl and James Swan right behind him. On lap three Lorenz inched ahead with Koidahl grabbing second. Lap five Koidahl slipped under the leader, then on lap six last weeks feature winner Doug Peterson gave the crowd a scare exiting turn two, Peterson's right front wheel broke causing him to bounce off the wall and fire erupted quickly. The caution was thrown, with Peterson's mount blazing, the safety crew got the fire out, as Peterson escaped any injury to himself.

After a lengthy clean up, Lorenz who just nabbed the front spot again, before the slowdown, was out front at the next green. Koidahl still wanted that front spot, knawing at the leader, the lead changed again on lap eight with Koidahl out front. Right behind these two, Dennis Carlton, Adam Regnier, Janssen, Kooi and Tommy Nevoso put on another great show. The leader got a little wide on lap nine and that was all Carlton needed to get the lead the tenth circuit.

More winners!!  In the left photo Jeff Goodwin (#23) took top honors in the Wisconsin Allison Legacy Series trophy dash.  The two-thirds scale race cars are powered by 2.2 liter Mazda engines.   In the right photo, Terry Hilgendorf (#69) made his way to victory lane in the Semi-Feature for the Herb's Super Stocks.

Regnier began to work on Koidahl, with Janssen close behind. Somehow Janssen out maneuvered his fellow competitors taking the lead on lap fifteen and going on to win his sixth feature of the season. Carlton finished second followed by Regnier, Kooi, quick timer Jerry Cowan, Zac Deeringer,  Tommy Nevoso and Don Radke in a very tight finish.

It took Giers only six laps to get to the front taking the lead from Dennis Petretti who led those first laps of the Wisconsin Allison Legacy Series feature. Despite afew caution periods, Geirs managed to run away with the race. Jeff Goodwin, Doug Riechley, Jack Kossow, Petretti and Bay Darnell completed the top six.
