Al Schill Jr. tops Geneva Late Models, helps father win second straight track championship!!

By Dale R. Erdmann

September 26, 1998; Lake Geneva, WI. - It was an excellent night for racing weather wise, as the forecast had said ,"70 % chance of thunder showers ".  A good size crowd came out and stand under the stars, as 1995 champion Late Model champion, Al Schill Jr. of Muskego, stood in for his father Saturday night at Lake Geneva Raceway.  Schill Jr. insured Al Schill Sr. of winning the 1998 super late model championship, by taking fast time, third in the dash and walking away with the 40 lap championship feature.

Al Schill Jr. (#14) stood in for his father Al Schill Sr. who was at another racetrack this evening. The younger Schill needed to fill in and secure the title for his father in the Super Late Model division.
He managed to fill in admirably taking the 40 lap feature event and setting fast time honors earlier in the evening.

Jeff Goodwin of Wadsworth,Illinois was denied a clean sweep in the Wisconsin Allison Legacy Series cars, by placing third in the dash, but the former open wheel driver took fast time and won the 15 lap feature. Mike Kooi from Island Lake,IL. won his second 20 lap Herb's Super Stock feature of the year, an event that ran non stop.

There were two roll overs, with everyone escaping injury. In the second super late model heat, rookie Ed Schneidwent got up on the wall, violently rolling, as his suspension ripped loose, hitting the fence. Ed stated "I'll be back for the October Classic ." In a heat race for the Allison Legacy series, Randy Coats got into the wall, taking a very hard roll, but came back and ran the feature, finishing ninth.

The wrong side up!!  In the left photo Ed Schneidwent (#15) climbed the backstretch wall and got onto his roof while Dennis Vito (#21) and Landry Potter (#22) fly by.  In the right photo Schniedwent's ride came to rest upside down on the track.  He was not injured in the accident and plans to return for the coming week's big Fall Classic event.

Dennis Vito came off of his outside pole starting position to grab the lead from Larry Surletta with Paul Loppnow, Mark Simonsen, Landry Potter and Joe Fischer. Simonsen slipped into second on lap five and then came out front on lap nine by passing Vito. Not wanting any margin to be created, Potter moved into second on the next lap.

It was tight throughout the field, as Danny Darnell started to work on Loppnow. Right behind this group, Kent Burkoth was trying to make a move, with Denny Hiffman and Schill Jr. behind him.

By lap thirteen, Darnell was fourth, while Simonsen still set the pace. On lap twenty, Hiffman spun in turn one, with the field bearing down on him. Everyone missed the stalled mount, with the first yellow of the race appearing. Simonsen led just two more lap, as Burkoth was on a mission snaring the lead. Laps twenty four through twenty nine, it was a Burkoth and Schill  Jr. show.

Side by side racing had the crowd going wild, as Schill inched ahead on lap thirty. Darnell dropped out at that time, with Potter and Ronnie Darnell right behind Burkoth in third and fourth.

Mark Hartline brought out the next yellow on lap thirty two, spinning into turn two. As the cars lined up, Burkoth's mount stopped in turn four, then caught on fire. Burkoth's quest for a win was over as his distributor cap was burned. But on the restart Schill didn't have an easy time, with Ronnie Darnell
now challenging the leaders every move.

The seven lap dash saw an extremely tight cluster behind the leader. This helped Schill win his second feature of the season, as Darnell hung onto second,  with Potter along side for third, Vito, Chad Barker, a recovering Hiffman and Simonsen rounded out the top finishers.

Mike Kooi shot out front of the 20 car super stock feature, with Willie Schumacher, Tim White and Tim Muller right on his tail. Rookie John Maki was the only driver on the move, taking over third on lap two. Dave Melahn in the Doug Peterson ride, took over fourth three laps later. Not that there wasn't any action, but this event would go non stop and with the close times, no one could move at will in the tight pack. Denny Norton Jr. in Greg Peterson's car and fifth place Zac Deeringer were putting on quite the show for a higher position.

With the white flag displayed, everyone wanted to move up, but this cluster was not going to let up.
Here's where things got a little crazy, coming down out of turn four, someone bobbled , this causing everyone to scatter.

Coming across the line was Kooi , who never knew about the melee behind him. John Janssen somehow took second , with Norton Jr. third, Maki fourth , Deeringer fifth , Melahn sixth , Tommy Nevoso and Adam Regnier rounded out the top eight. As for top five runner Schumacher who was running in that tight cluster, he slid across the grass and never came around across the line to be credited with finishing the last lap.

16 year old Erik Darnell led the first lap of the Wisconsin Allison Legacy series feature event. Rick Modrich former street stock competitor then moved in front on lap two, Goodwin was already up to fourth. Eight laps later Goodwin was on top, taking the win just in front of Modrich, Darnell, Ken Wills, Joe Bayer and Dennis Petretti.
