Van Pay earns 98th career IMCA Modified win!
May 14, 1999, Luxemburg, WI. - After a one week delay, racing returned to the Luxemburg Tri Star Speedway on Friday night with a very fast paced program.
The IMCA Stock Cars went at it first with Joe Kerkhoff tasking charge at the start followed by Tony Bouche, Brian Bruechert, John Heinz, Dave Bouche and Dave Budzban. The pack stayed tight and Heinz pulled to the outside and started working to the front, taking over the lead on lap 9.
Larry Karcz, Jr moved into the runner up spot on lap 12, but Heinz had already checked out on the field and ran away to his first feature win on the season in the non stop event. Karcz pulled away as well to run to second followed by Bruechert in third. Defending champion, Joe White came through on the final lap to take fourth place with Kerkhoff taking his best finish yet in his rookie year in fifth. Rod Snellenberger rounded out the top six.
The very tacky track also enabled the Modifieds a chance for a green to checker non stop run with Dan Deau taking the lead at the start followed by Todd Dart, Dave Fisher, Rick Mott and Buck Schmelzer. After five taps, Deau's mount started to smoke and two laps later, Dart inherited the lead when Deau retired from the race, Fisher then started applying the pressure and pulled alongside the leader. They pair ran side by side until lap 14.
R.M Van Pay had moved through traffic into third and when the front two singled out, Van Pay pulled into the battte and went to the outside to take over the lead on lap 17. Roy Ihlenfeld moved into the runner up spot on lap 21, and caught Van Pay as the white flag appeared, but ran out of time to wrestle the lead away. The win for Van Pay was his first of the season here for the defending champ, his 26th career here and ran his career total to 98. Ihlenfeld took second and took over the point lead. Dart held off Scott Mullah to place third with Fisher taking fifth, Mike Mashl rounded out the top six.
A field of 10 Sport Trucks ran their feature flag to flag as well with DanDavister taking the early lead. Jerry Scray, Eugene Gregorich Jr, Brandon Blashe and Kevin Strebel wewere right behind. Gregorich took second and pulled up on the leader as the field stayed bunched behind. Ben Kroll waited til the mid point to join the lead pack and the top five really mixed it up over the final 2 laps.
Kroll took over the lead on the white flag lap and ran to his first feature win of the year, Strebel took the runner up spot on the final lap with Gregorich and Blashe getting by Davister as well in the final turn for the final run down.
Fred Davister started the Street Stock main on the pole and quickly started to pull away from the field in the early laps. Unlike the other three features, the Streets had two yellow flas, both on lap 6.
This pulled the field up on Davister with Jeff Vlies in second followed by David Baenen. Tom Leonhard, Jason Czarapata and Randy Rahn. With the green out the rest of the way, Davister was able to control the lead and again pull away running to and unchallenged victory, his first of the season. The race was for second and Rahn pulled into the runner up spot on lap 15 and started to whittle into the lead but ran out of laps to mount a challenge. Vlies held off the defending champ, Czarepata for the third place finish with Leonhard and Jered Siefert rounding out the top 6.
Next week, a special womens VS mens spectator eliminator event will take place during the program.
The weekly program start a 7:00 p.m., every Friday night. The Luxemburg Tri-Star
