Brian Mullen (#72) scored his first IMCA Modified feature win of the 1999 racing season at Luxemburg Tri-Star. Mullen got a great restart near the race's mid-point and moved from third to first on the track. He then held on to score the victory. |
The Streets took to the dry, slick oval first with Paul Kuehn taking charge at the start followed by Shannon Smith, Jason Czarapata, James Tebon and Frank Dorn. Tebon made his way to the front on lap 6 and started to pull away, before a series of cautions kept the field bunched behind. A move by Czarapata on lap 10 was erased by a caution and all the while, current point leader, Randy Rahn was moving up through traffic as well.
After a lap 12 caution, Rahn hooked up with the leaders and in 2 more laps was in the lead. Rahn set out to hide from the field leaving the race for the runner up spot. Rahn survived several more cautions on his way to his second feature win of the year. Czarapata wrestled the second place from Tebon on the second last lap and cousin, Brandon Czarapata finished fourth just ahead of Dorn. Travis Van Straten rounded out the top six.
The IMCA Stock Cars ran the quickest of the features with only a couple cautions early in the race. Eric VanIten took charge from the start followed by Rob Waechter, Charlie Kroll, Craig Paque and Jon Wolf. VanIten pulled away early, but after a few taps, Waechter started to close back in and by lap 9 was right behind the leader again.
On lap 12, Waechter found an opening to the inside and took the lead, but, VanIten used the same move on the following lap to regain the lead, and again started to pull away a bit. Waechter stayed with in a car length the rest of the way but could not again seriously challenge for the lead. VanIten raced to his first division feature of the season with Waechter taking the runner up spot. Paque, John Heinz, Larry Karcz, Jr and Wolf round out the top six finishers.
Dan Deau started the Modified main on the pole and led the way for 9 laps, wher a series of cautions changed the lineup and made for a close race. After a lap 10 restart, Brian Mullen ran from third into the lead with Deau holding second, Chris Christensen, Dan Ratajczak, Todd Dart and Dave Zeitler behind. The order continued to shift until the green was out for the final time for a 8 lap run to the finish. Mullen continued to lead the way with Zeitler now in second followed by Dart, Ratajczak, Scott Mullen and Doug Maurer.
Mullen recorded his first feature win of the year with Dart taking the runner up spot from Zeitler two laps from the end of the race. Zeitler held Off Ratajczak for third place with Scott Mullen taking fifth and R.M. Van Pay rounding out the top six.
Bob Brown led the first two laps of the Sport Truck main until Eugene Gregorich, Jr. used the outside line to take the lead on lap 3. On the next lap, Gregorich slid wide in turn three which allowed Ben Kroll to slip inside on both Brown and Gregorich to take the lead and race to his second feature win of the season. Gregorich finally made the pass into second on lap 8 but could not run down the winner. Brown took third place with Dan Davister fourth Brandon Blashe fifth and Shawn Dorn sixth.
Next week Tri Star will run a schools out special with all kids with a school ID admitted free, as the summer season officially kicks off.
