Mashl charges
to Modified win, June 30, 2000; Luxemburg, WI. - A beautiful night greeted a huge field of cars and crowd for the start of the 4th of July weekend racing program sponsored by Concrete Finishers Friday night at the Luxemburg Tri Star Speedway.
The IMCA Stock Cars took to the fast, tacky track first with Jeremy Christians taking the lead after two attempts to get the first lap completed. Christians pulled away from the start and built a nice lead before the caution bunched the field on lap 12. Shawn Wagner was running in the second spot followed by Benji LaCrosse, Greg Gretz, Pat Davister and Brandon Czarapata. LaCrosse moved into second on the restart and stayed with the leader, trying the inside line to move to the front. Christians again inched ahead and had the field bunched for the final time on lap 20 for a multi car spin in turn two. Over the final 2 laps, Wagner retook the runner-up spot and chased the leader to his third feature win of the season along with the sponsor bonus money that was put into each feature win tonight. LaCrosse held off Davister for third place finish with Jay Matthias taking fifth and Czarapata rounding out the top six.
There were numerous cautions over the first 10 laps of the IMCA Modified main with Joe White leading through the first 7 laps before R.M. Van Pay took control and led to the final restart on lap 11. Jared Siefert, White, Brad Anderegg, Dan Deau and Mike Klenz were behind the leader for the restart and the final 14 lap run to the finish. Van Pay stayed to the inside and pulled away from the field with Siefert taking the high line to hold the runner up spot. Mike Mashl took his day glo car to the high side and moved from sixth, sweeping into the runner up spot on lap 19. It took a couple laps to reel in the leader and he then just flew by on the outside again to take the lead and run to his first feature win of the season. Van Pay held off Brian Mullen to take the runner up finish with Siefert taking fourth. White was fifth and Eddie Muenster rounded out the top six.
Jeff Vlies took the lead from the pole in the Street Stock main and started to pull away from Jeff Treml, Tom Leonhard, James Van Rixal and Phil Hiles. A couple cautions on laps 12 and 13, bunched the field on the leader but despite pressure after the restart, Vlies was again able to build on a lead. The race was for the rest of the top five over the final laps. Point leader, Travis Van Straten worked into the runner-up spot with 3 laps left and held off Jesse Colwell for the strong finish. Jerry Kroll took fourth place with Tom Daubner and Fred Davister rounding out the top six. It was the first career feature win for Vlies.
The Sport Trucks returned this week with Jeff Scray taking the lead followed by Ed Danoff, Shawn Dorn, Jerry Scray and Dan Davister. Point leader, Kevin Strebel slowly picked his way from the beck of the field to the runner-up spot on lap 9. Danoff had taken over the lead one lap earlier and had Strebel move to the front with just 2 laps remaining. The win was the fourth of the season for Strebel with Danoff taking second followed by Jerry and Jeff Scray, Davister and Bob Brown.
