Mullen scores
again in Mod action at The Berg! August 18, 2000; Luxemburg, WI. - On a cool, fall like night, there were two repeat and two first time feature winners on Special Olympics and WFAR Trophy night at Tri-Star.
The Street Stocks took to the track first with Doug Lagecki setting the pace for the first 3 laps before Leon Schott took charge and started to pull away from the field. Charlie Kroll moved into the runner up spot on lap 7, but 2 laps later dropped out of the race with mechanical problems. Jesse Colwell inherited the second spot with Dave Baenen, Jamie Colwell, Fred Davister and Ed Anschutz behind. Jamie Colwell and Anschutz moved into the top four before a caution on lap 15 bunched the field. The Colwell boys hounded the leader after the restart with Jamie using the outside line to take second and then move into the lead when Schott puffed out of the race on lap 18. Point leader, Travis Van Straten moved to the front and into third on the same lap. Jamie led the field to the white flag when a caution ended the race a lap early for a stalled car in turn four. The win was the first ever for Jamie Colwell here at Tri Star, with brother, Jesse, right behind in second. Van Straten took third with Anschutz taking fourth. Jeff Treml was fifth and Lasecki rounded out the top six. Van Straten holds a 515 - 505 lead in the points over Jarnie Colwell for the final race next week.
The IMCA Stock Car division was next with several of the point leaders starting in the back after coming through the consy. Rookie contender, Greg Gretz, led the race from the drop of the green and held on through several cautions during the first 8 laps. After the final caution, Gretz led the way for non stop racing to the finish with Benji LaCrosse sifting in second followed by Jon Wolf, Larry Kercz, Jr, Ben Kroll, Tim Van De Hei and Joe LeBotte. LaCrosse looked inside for a couple laps but Gretz would not open the door. LaCrosse then took to the outside and moved into the top spot on lap 11. Once in front, he pulled away as the battle stayed tight for the runner up spot. Gretz, Karcz, and Van De Hei wrestled for position to the finish. LaCrosse won his first career home town feature, and his 10th area feature of the year. Van De Hei took the runner up finish with Karcz sneaking out third. LeBotte and Wolf made the top five with Pat Davister rounded out the top six. Point leader, Eric VanIten, had problems throughout the night but did finish the feature in 16th place to end the night with a 22 point margin over Van De Hei. All VanIten needs to do next week is qualify for the feature to secure his first career track championship. Van De Hei, Pat Davister and Jeremy Christians would all have a chance at the title if VanIten does not make the feature.
Jeremy Jacobs set the pace for the first 3 laps of the modified nightcap with Jeremie Hedrick moving into the top spot on lap 4. Scott Mullen moved into the runner up spot one lap later and the pair battled until both drivers went spinning in turn four on lap 11, turning the top spot over to Chris Derenne for the restart. Brad Anderegg, Dave Gracyalny, point leader Brian Mullen, Jerry Muenster and Jared Siefert were behind. The battle for the lead was furious for several laps with Anderegg moving into then top spot on tap 12. Mullen powered by to take the lead one lap later and once in front, sped off to record his fifth feature win of the year. The battle for the runner up finish went to the finish line with Anderegg edging Derenne. R.M Van Pay took the fourth place finish with Dale Boersctlinger taking fifth in his first night here this season. Siefert rounded out the top six positions. The point battle is between Mullen with 514 and Van Pay with 500 entering next weeks final contest.
The Sport Trucks started with Shawn Dorn leading the opening lap before Dave Davister took charge on the second lap. Dorn spun in turn four and was hit head on by Kevin Scray, taking both out of the race. Davister led the race to the finish after the restart with Jerry Scray, point leader Kevin Strebel, and Ed Danoff battling to the finish for the runner up spot. Strebel snuck by Scray to take the second place finish at the line with Scray and Danoff right behind. Dimitri Winans and Brendon Paterson rounded out the top six. Baring any unforeseen problems next week for Strebel, he will successfully defend his 1999 Sport Truck title with a second straight championship. Danoff and Davister could have a shot if Strebel has a major problem. Next week the 12th season will come to a close at Tri Star. Racing gets under way at 7 P.M. for Fan Appreciation night.
