Back collects
first career Mod feature win at The Berg! June 2, 2000; Luxemburg, WI. - Anew month but the same cold, windy weather remained for another Friday night racing program at Tri-Star. One repeat feature winner and three first time tri-star winners highlighted the nights activities on McDonalds of Luxemburg and FS Stop night.
After a couple attempts, the Street Stock feature finally settled in with Jeff Vlies leading the way followed by Brian Boettcher, Mike Coel, Phil Faustini, and the dynamic duo of Jamie and Jesse Colwell. Coel worked to the inside and took the top spot away on lap 8 and a single lap later, the Colwell brothers moved into second and third. Jerry Kroll, winner of the last 2 features, moved into the top four on lap 10.
On lap 13, the caution slowed the pace with Coel still in control ahead of the Colwell's. Kroll, James Tebon, Vlies, and Boettcher were next in line. On the restart, Kroll's mount would not fire and he retired from the event. Vlies also had trouble which moved Fred Davister into sixth place. Coel had his hands full for the remaining laps as Jamie Colwell tried on each lap to pull to the inside. Each attempt was fought off cleanly and Coel drove on to collect his first career feature win Jamie Colwell led brother Jesse to the finish line with Davister edging Tebon for fourth place. Boettcher completed his best run of the season in sixth. The IMCA Stock Cars have run some very exciting features in the area this season, but tonight was not one of them here, as the caution was displayed numerous times which finally ended the race after 16 of the 22 laps. Rookie Greg Gretz led the way et the start, followed by Joe Kerkhoff, Ben Kroll, Shawn Wagner, and Jon Wolf. Wagner pulled into the lead after a lap 5 restart with Jason Czarapata pulling into the runner up spot at the same time. Czarapata pulled to the outside and worked side by side for 2 laps before moving into the lead on lap 9. One lap later. The leaders collided entering turn three, with Czarapata's car ending up on the hood of Wagners. Both were able to continue. Jeremy Christians inherited the lead and held off Jay Matthias, Benji LaCrosse, Kerkhoff, point leader, Enc VanIten and Pat Davister. Christians won the race on lap 16, when another caution brought the checkered with it. The win was the second of the season as he became the first repeat winner in the division. Matthias, LaCrosse, Kerkhoff, VanIten, and Davister rounded out the top six.
Chris Christensen grabbed the early lead in the Modified headliner followed by rookie contender, Bill LeMieux, Randie Back, Tom Baumgart, Doug Maurer, and Jerry Muenster. The action stayed close and exciting at the front with LeMieux hooking up on the outside and taking over the lead on lap 5. LeMieux drifted wide in turn four allowing Back to slip into first on lap 7. A lap 11 caution bunched the field on the new leader with LeMieux still holding second followed by R.M. Van Pay, Maurer, Christensen, Baumgart, Jerry and Eddie Muenster. Back survived several more cautions before racing resumed on lap 15, with LeMieux, Maurer, point leader, Dave Zeitler, Jerry Muenster and Chris Derenne behind. Back was able to pull ahead a bit and left the battle for the number 2 spot as he drove on to collect his first career Tri Star Feature win. Maurer crossed in second, with Mike Mashl making a strong outside run over the last couple laps to finish in third ahead of Muenster. Zeitler took fifth with LeMieux rounding out the top six.
Jeff Scray took the lead at the start of the Sport Truck main followed by Joe White, Dan Scharenbroch, Dave Davister and Kevin Strebel. The front 2 pulled away from the field and White slipped into the top spot on lap 8, and drove to his first career feature win in a truck. Scray took the runner-up finish with Ed Danoff holding off Dan Davister for third place. Shawn Dorn was fifth and Dave Davister rounded out the top six. The Trucks will now compete every other week for the rest of the season or until there are 12 in the field. Next week will be a penny and candy toss for the kids sponsored by Bay Speed Center.
