Mullen
masters Mod action at Luxemburg! June 9, 2000; Luxemburg, WI. - Finally, a perfect night for racing with hot air temps and a light breeze for Bay Speed Center night at the Luxemburg Tri Star Speedway. The IMCA Stock Cars kicked off the feature portion of the program by running a quick 22 lap event non stop.
Joe Kerkhoff grabbed the early lead with Bob Vanden Avond, Shawn Wagner, Benji LaCrosse, Mark Derenne, and Jon Wolf behind. The lead pack of cars remained close throughout the race with plenty of two and three wide action. Joe LeBotte was the first to join the leaders and hooked up on the outside. Brian Bruechert also moved high with Jay Matthias. LeBotte moved by LaCrosse for third on lap 6, which made him move outside as well. By the mid point of the race, Kerkhoff was still in the hot seat, holding off a determined pack right behind. LeBotte was now into the runner up spot with Wagner, LaCrosse, Bruechert and Matthias grouped behind. On lap 14, LeBotte and LaCrosse each made a move on the leader, making it three wide, with LaCrosse coming out on top. Kerkhoff held on for second but Bruechert, Wagner and Matthias all snuck by LeBotte in the shuffle.
LaCrosse continued to run wide while Bruechert moved into the runner up spot and started to work to the inside. Finally, on lap 19, Bruechert was able to slip by and take over the top spot and run to his first feature win at Tri Star since August 21, 1998. LaCrosse held the runner up spot to the finish holding off Matthias and LeBotte in the top 4. Kerkhoff ended up in fifth with Jeremy Christians securing the sixth place finish.
It took two tries to get the first lap in the books in the Modified feature with Randy LeMieux and Bill LeMieux sharing the lead over the first few laps before Bill settled into the lead on lap 5 with Shawn Olson moving into second, followed by R.M. Van Pay, Brian Mullen and Brad Anderegg. The race was slowed only twice for spins on laps 7 and 8, which left plenty of laps for all out racing to complete the 25 lap distance. After the final restart, Mullen moved into the lead and started to pull away with Anderegg moving into the runner up spot on lap 15. Mullen extended his lead over the final laps to become the first repeat feature winner in the division so far this season. Anderegg crossed alone in second with Van Pay holding off Olson for third. Bill LeMieux took fifth with Eddie Muenster rounding out the top six. The win also capped off a very busy two days for Mullen, who competed in and finished third at a big USMTS race in Allison, Iowa the night before. Lance Arneson took control of the Street Stock feature followed by Doug Lasecki, Ed Anschutz, Jeff Treml, Jamie Colwell and Tom Leonhard. The action tightened the field after a lap 2 caution for debris with Anschutz leading one lap before Arneson settled into the top spot again. Jesse Colwell moved through three wide traffic into the runner up spot with Fred Davister, Travis Van Straten and James Tebon moving up in line. Davister moved into the lead on lap 10, and after a caution on the next lap, Jesse Colwell moved to the outside and took over the top spot. A final caution on lap 15 set up a five lap dash and an action packed finish.
On lap 18, Jesse Colwell was exiting turn four, when the right rear tire went fiat, ending his race, but turned the lead over to his brother, Jamie, who had taken over the runner up spot from Davister the lap before. As he was leading the pack out of four for the white flag, he was tapped from behind and spun across the line, with the car stalling on the infield. Davister brought the field around to the finish, but he received the black flag instead of the checker, which in turn gave the win to the third place finisher, last weeks feature winner, Mike Coel. Van Straten ended up second and moved from fourth in the points back into first after making the reverse move last week. Treml, took third with Darci Czarapata, making her best finish ever in fourth. Phil Hiles made the top five with Charlie Van Ooyen rounding out the top six positions. Dan Davister led the first 5 laps of the Truck feature before drifting wide to allow Ed Danoff an opening to take the lead and hold off Davister for his first feature win of the season. Kevin Strebel and Dave Davister round out the top 4 finishers. Next week will be Big Wheel night sponsored by Coke. RACING SUMMARY IMCA Modifieds: IMCA Stock Cars: Street Stocks: Sport Trucks: |
