May 18, 2001; Luxemburg, WI. - A perfect spring night for racing action Friday night at Tri Star produced four different feature winners after four tough feature events.
Brian Bruechert started the IMCA Stock Car main on the pole and took command at the start followed by Brandon Mindak, Don Aregoni, Jr, Larry Karcz, Jr and Bryan Techmeier. Several cautions during the first five laps kept the field bunched with Bruechert holding the top spot throughout, From lap 6, the green was out to the finish with Karcz moving into the runner up spot. Larry Ingebretson and Pat Davister moved up to the front with Jay Matthias joining the fun a couple laps later. The battle for the top spot was tight to the finish with Karcz trying both inside and the slicker outside lanes to take over the lead, but was fought off each time. Davister was making a charge to the front, but a flat tire dropped him out of the battle on lap 12. On the final couple of laps, Karcz was able to pull even with the leader, and they crossed under the white flag even on the final lap. Out of the final corner, Bruechert ran wide to block the final pass and collected his first feature win of the season. Karcz was second by a bumper with Matthias taking third ahead of Benji LaCrosse, Ben Kroll and Ingebretson. Jerry Scharenbrock took the lead at the start of the Modified main event and set the pace for the first 5 laps before Randy LeMieux slipped by. LeMieux pulled away to a lead before the car died on lap 13, with Scharenbrock regainig the lead. Mike Klenz, Jeremy Jacobs, R.M. Van Pay, Randie Back and Jerry Muenster were right behind. Klenz was moving in on the lead until the first caution of the race appeared on lap 19 for a spin in turn one. Klenz moved into the top spot one lap after the restart, bringing Van Pay along into second. Van Pay made a move into the lead out of turn two on lap 23, only to have a caution erase the move and put Klenz back into the top spot. Klenz hugged the inside line for the final 2 laps to hold off Van Pay and collect his first career feature win here at Tri Star. Van Pay was second followed by Jerry Muenster, Back, Joe White and Jacobs. The win for Klenz was especially sweet following an end of season racing injury to his left hand last year made his racing this year very uncertain. He credits the doctors positive attitude and guidance throughout that made a return to racing possible. Holding off the tracks winningest modified driver to claim his first feature win here was the icing on the cake. Jeff Treml took charge of the Street Stock finale at the start ahead of Kevin Charles, David Baenen, Fred Davister, James Van Rixel and Jeff Vlies. Charles moved into the top spot on lap 5 with Davister following into second. Davisters run to the front ended 2 laps later with an ailing speed plant which moved the Greenleaf connection of Jamie and Jesse Colwell right behind the leader. On lap 16, Charles drifted wide in turn two which allowed the Colwells to get by. Jesse was running alongside of his brother on the outside making the pass, and the pair continued to run door to door. On lap 18, Charles tries to get to the inside of the pair entering turn one. But there was not enough room for the move and he caught the car of Jesse Colwell and the pair slid off the track in turn two. Jamie took over the lead for the restart followed by Vlies, Mike Coel and Leon Schott. Colwell held off the duel behind for his first feature win of the year with Coel edging Vlies for the runner up spot. Schott took third with Chaz Van Ooyen and Eddie Anschutz rounding out the top six. Defending Sport Truck champion, Kevin Strebel took the lead in the feature on the second lap and held off constant pressure from Dan Davister to win his first feature of the season. Dave Davister followed to finish third with Ed Danoff, Jerry Scray, Jr and Dean Wiltzius rounding out the top six. SUMMARY IMCA MODIFIED IMCA STOCK CAR STREET STOCK SPORT TRUCK |
