Racing
in store for Expo Raceway!!
The Manitowoc County Expo Raceway will re-open
for weekly shows for the first time since 1996. The 1/3-mile clay oval will host a weekly
Wednesday night show featuring IMCA Modifieds, IMCA Stock Cars, and Street Stocks
beginning May 22nd, 2002.
This time around, the Manitowoc County Expo Board will running the program under the
direction of their Race Track Committee chaired by David Gauger of Two Rivers.
"We've worked hard to insure success this time around." Gauger says. "Among
the improvements since '96 are new track lighting, a new scoring tower, new pit office and
concession stand, a new pit lane allowing more fluid access and new lighting in the pit
area."
Along with the regular Wednesday night show, Gauger also revealed plans for an IRA Sprint
car special and a Fall Invitational. No dates were available at this printing.
"Our goal is to bring a quality show back to the Expo." Gauger continued.
"One that both the fans and racers will want to make a regular part of their weekly
racing entertainment."
The group faces quite a challenge with two strong competitors nearby. 141 Speedway, an
asphalt oval is 15 north and Sheboygan Co. Fairgrounds track is 30 minutes south.
The committee is undaunted by this however as they believe that their mid-week placement
fills a void in the race fans calendar that could result in good crowds and some great
racing action.
Gauger also hinted that announcements regarding more changes and new features were in the
works.
And with new mangement, new ideas, and some drastic, long needed changes to the facility
Manitowoc Expo Raceway may finally have a recipe for long-term success.
