SIEFERT STRIKES IN MOD MAIN AT MANTY!  WENZEL WINS STOCK CAR FEATURE! By Bill Schlei

July 31, 2002; Manitowoc, WI - Mother Nature finally gave the fans at Manitowoc a break from the sweltering conditions of previous weeks while the action on the track continued to be "red hot".

Scott Boyea of Green Bay led the field to the green flag for the IMCA Modified feature but was bypassed in turn one by Chris Derrene of Luxemburg and Eric Scribner of Kiel. Derrene and Scribner would go side by side for four laps until Jared Seifert of Green Bay drove around both cars to the lead.

R.M. Van Pay would make a charge in the closing laps of the race but came up a few car lengths short. Derrene, Scribner and Dan Ratajczak completed the top five.

The IMCA Stock Cars spent their feature making work for the paint and body men. Troy Jerovets started on the pole but was overtaken immediately by Brett Wenzel and Rod Snellenberger who began a side by side battle for the first three laps  until Jamie Colwell made contact with Brett Piontek causing him to spin and bringing out the caution flag.

On the restart Wenzel assumed the lead but was chased down by Jeremy Christians who ran side by side until lap 9 when he finally passed Wenzel for the top spot.

Three more caution periods would bring the race to its time limit. However, the last yellow was because Christians motor expired allowing Wenzel to take the win. Greg Gretz, Rod Snellenberger, Travis Van Stratten and Brandon Czarapata rounded out the top five.

Street Stock ran an impressive green to checker feature that began with Jolene Mueller on the pole. At the green flag Doug Morgan pulled along side to challenge and would stay there for the first three laps when overheating problems forced Mueller to retire.

Morgan proceeded to run away leaving Keith Kickbusch and Paul Kuene to scrap for second. Kuene ran the high side and hung in until the final corner when he lost traction and slipped back to fifth.  Tom Leonard finished third just ahead of  Jeff Treml.

Hobby Stock also went caution free with Dale Frank of Kaukauna leading the entire race and picking up the victory.

The Hobby's also ran make-up feature from last week with Eric Wetenkamp picking up his sixth feature win of the season.

The four cylinder cars made their second appearance at Manitowoc and provided a spirited contest with five lead changes in just 10 laps among four cars.  Tom Schmidt of Seymour was the  winner of the event with Dan Anderson a close second.
