Melbinger edging closer to Late Model title with win at Marshfield!

July 10, 1999; Marshfield, WI: - It was a clear day for racing here at Marshfield. Brian Back of Vesper drove off with fast time in the CWRA Late Model division. Cale Laessig of Marshfield, took fast time in the CWSSA Super Stocks and Don Tieman Jr. in the 1-Man Cruisers.

71099b.jpg (19652 bytes) Rory Melbinger (#88) from nearby Marshfield is edging closer to winning his first ever championship on asphalt.  Melbinger competed at Marshfield Speedway when it was dirt and won a couple titles.  He currently leads the CWRA Late Model standings at the track.

In the CWRA Late Model feature, Brian Seubert led lap one, but lap two saw Dean LaPointe with it. Keith Witt grabbed the lead on lap six. Lap nine, Rory Melbinger challenged Witt and got it. Witt came back with the lead on lap ten.

Witt was driving the inside lane with Melbinger on the outside. Melbinger took the lead for another lap on lap 13. Witt came back with the lead for lap 14 and 15. Melbinger captured the lead for good on lap 16. On lap 19 Mike Brahmstedt and Mark Eswein passed Witt for second and third. Eswein passed Brahmstedt on the next lap for second. Witt came back for third on lap 21. Melbinger won, Eswein second, Witt third, fast timer Brian Back fourth and LaPointe fifth.

Merle Weinfurter led lap one of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Bernie Fritz grabbed on lap two. Weinfurter continued up front right on Fritz's heels. Judd Brandl who started 14th was making his way through the field and was in fourth by lap 14. Brandl passed John Bell on lap 16 for third place. Brandl grabbed second on lap 18.

On a roll? Judd Brandl (#27) seems to have found the best way around Marshfield's big half-mile paved oval, as for the second consecutive week he made his way to victory lane after the CWSSA Super Stock feature race. 71099c.jpg (19658 bytes)

Brandl now set his sites on Weinfurter, on the white flag lap, he took over the lead. Brandl won, Chad Brundidge second, Weinfurter third, Bell fourth and Shawn Stelzer fifth.

71099a.jpg (20485 bytes) Two wheeled action!  Another driver who seems to have Marshfield Super Speedway figured out is Appleton, WI native Rick Bretl.    The motorcycles again thrilled fans with their fast two wheeled action and Bretl again powered his 600 Rotax to victory lane after the feature race.

Once again Rick Bretl from Appleton proved the best tonight on two wheels on the blacktop. He was on a 600 Rotax. Steve Kasten chased Bretl on a SK service Yamaha but settled for second. New comer Mike Bertram brought his CTK performance 600 Honda home third. Lee Johnson from Big Falls fell on the sixth lap of the feature but was uninjured.

Randy Bargender won the 1-Man Cruiser feature. Chad Simone took home second, Doug Becker third, Darrell Paschel fourth and Don Tieman fifth.

Each week more and more 1-man Cruisers are appearing at Marshfield Super Speedway.  Randy Bargender (#24) who had built of of the first such vehicles this season used his knowledge of the track to win the feature race. 71099d.jpg (15065 bytes)

Rod Feltz and Fran Esser won the 2-Man Cruiser event. Chuck Green and Chris Sternweis second, and John Brugh and Guy Dupee third. 

Next week is the Bill Sherman Memorial. Gates open at 5 p.m., time trials 6 p.m. and racing at 7:30. Divisions include CWRA Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, Great Northern Legends, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers.
