July 17, 1999; Marshfield, WI: - Not a cloud in the sky here in Marshfield and everyone was ready to go racing. Gary Back set fast time in the CWRA Late Models, Chad Brundidge in the CWSSA Super Stocks and Randy Bargender in the 1-Man Cruisers.

Twenty-three Great North Legends came to race with us here. Three drivers from Texas joined us, as well as drivers from Minnesota, Illnois, Iowa and Wisconsin. Ben Pettis of Eau Claire took the top spot in qualifying in the Legends.
Mark Mackesy grabbed the early lead from pole sitter Rocky Breezer in CWRA Late Model action. As Mackesy led, Breezer followed in second with Pete Kempf in third. On lap 17 Dean LaPointe took third from Kempf. He then proceeded to take second from Breezer on lap 19. Brian Back and Gary Back passed Breezer on lap 20 for third and fourth.
A spin on lap 21 took the leader, Mackesy out of the race. Brian Back now with the lead, held his father Gary off for the last four laps. Brian Back won, Gary Back second, Tom Reffner third, Dean LaPointe fourth and Rory Melbinger fifth.

Larry Schultz led the first three laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Allan Sankey captured it from him on lap four. Schultz fell into second with Scott Hamel in third. Hamel passed Schultz for second on lap eight. John Bell took third from Schultz on lap 11.
Bell moved into second on lap 14 with Judd Brandl who started 14th close behind. Brandl passed Bell on the next lap and then set his sites on Sankey. Lap 17 Brandl took the lead. Brandl won, Cale Laessig second, Sankey third, Bell fourth and Hamel fifth.
Mike Bula lead laps one and two of the Legend feature. Dwayne Vetrone then took the lead until lap 7. J.C. Umscheid now held the lead on lap 7 with his father David Umscheid right behind. The Texas two held their positions as fast timer Ben Pettis moved through the field and made it to third on lap 16.

Pettis was unable to get past either father or son. J.C. Umscheid took the win, David Umscheid second, Pettis third, Curt Gnatzig fourth and Dean Fisher fifth. Fast timer Randy Bargender took the win in the 1-Man Cruisers. Doug Becker second, Chad Simone third, Ric Anderson fourth and Donald Tieman Jr. fifth.

The team of Rod Feltz and Fran Esser won the 2-Man Cruiser event. Chuck Green and Mike Reijeski second, John Brugh and Guy Dupee third.
Next Saturday is Prince Night at the races, and there will be mechanics races in addition to the regular racing program. Gates open at 5 p.m., time trials 6 p.m. and racing at 7:30. Divisions include CWRA Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, 1-Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers.
