Point leader Rory Melbinger back atop Late Model action!

July 31, 1999; Marshfield, WI: - The storms stopped in the early morning and the sun came out for a beautiful race day. Gary Back beat his son Brian in qualifying by less than a tenth of a second in the CWRA Late Models. Cale Laessig with fast time in the CWSSA Super Stocks, Charlie Menard in the Legends, and Doug Becker in the 1- Man Cruisers.

73099a.jpg (21477 bytes) Current Marshfield Speedway CWRA Late Model point leader Rory Melbinger (#88) helped pad his point lead with a trip to the winners circle after feature action this evening on the big half-mile paved oval.

Rocky Breezer held the lead of the CWRA Late Model feature almost half-way through. John Frazier challenged him at first until Bobby Stolze Jr. took second. Jeremy Lepak grabbed second on lap eight. Breezer lost the lead to Lepak on lap 13. A problem with Lepak's car forced him to retire on lap 18 leaving the lead to Rory Melbinger. Brian Back was right there with Melbinger challenging him for the lead.

Back was unable to take away the lead and Melbinger won, Back second, Tom Reffner third, Dean LaPointe fourth and Wayne Breitenfeldt fifth. Cary Lyons led the first three laps of the CWSSA Super Stock feature.

Hot Rod Lincoln!  Johnny Bell (#99) scored a popular win in the CWSSA Super Stock feature when the local racer put his Lincoln Continental bodied racer in the winners circle after feature race action. 73099b.jpg (17056 bytes)

John Bell moved his way from six into the lead for lap four. Lyons held his place in second until Scott Hamel grabbed it. A spin on lap ten took fourth place runner Greg Back out of the race and sent Judd Brandl to the back of the pack.

On the re-start John Bell held the lead and Dave Pagels took second with Allan Sankey third. Sankey took second from Pagels on the next lap. Shawn Stelzer moved into third on lap 13 and then to second on lap 14. Fast timer Cale Laessig who started 12th, broke into third on lap 16. At the checkered, Bell won, Stelzer second, Laessig third, Sankey fourth and Pagels fifth.

In the Legend feature, Dean Fisher led through lap seven. Charlie Menard then took over. His cousin Paul Menard wasn't far behind taking second on lap nine. The Menards were followed by Ben Pettis and then Dwayne Vetrone, but they were unable to split apart the cousins. Charlie Menard won, Paul second, Vetrone third, Milt Kemp Jr. fourth and Pettis fifth.

73099c.jpg (12630 bytes) Another win!  Doug Becker (#77) who currently leads the 1-man Cruiser division scored yet another feature race victory in the class.  Becker hopes to become the first division champion in a class that started new for the 1999 racing season.

Chad Simone held the lead for the first five laps of the 1-Man Cruiser feature. Randy Bargender then took it only to lose it to Doug Becker three laps later. Becker won, Bargender second, Simone third, Darrell Paschel fourth and Don Tieman Jr. fifth.

The team of Quenton Draeger and Ted Strebe won the 2-Man Cruiser event. Todd Neiter and Troy Engman second, Rodney Feltz and Fran Esser third.

The winner of the Target Bike Giveaway was Brittney Kempf, Pete Kempf's daughter, a CWRA Late Model driver. Next Saturday is the Marshfield News-Herald, Wisconsin Rapids Daily Tribune, Stevens Point Journal & WYTE Bucks Night, all admission just $2.00.

Racing includes CWRA Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, 1- Man Cruisers, 2-Man Cruisers and Motorcycles. Gates open at 5 p.m., qualifying 6 p.m. and racing 7:30 p.m.  Marshfield Super Speedway is a half-mile paved oval, located three miles west of Marshfield, WI on county hwy H.
