Mackesy outruns Back to score CWRA Late Model win at Marshfield!

August 14, 1999; Marshfield, WI: -  As the track cooled off, Brian Back came closer to his father's track record with every qualifying lap. Brian was unable to beat the record and had to settle with fast time for the night. Cale Laessig set fast time again in the CWSSA Super Stock division, Paul Menard was fast qualifier in the Legends and Don Tieman Jr. in the 1-Man Cruisers.

A hard fought win!!  Mark Mackesy (#12) stayed just ahead of Gary Back in the closing laps of the CWRA Late Model feature and he went on to score the win here on Marshfield Speedway's big half-mile paved oval.

Mark Mackesy grabbed the early lead in the CWRA Late Model feature. John Frazier followed behind Mackesy, and Witt was right behind Frazier. Lap 14, Gary Back broke into the top three and on lap 15 took second away from Frazier. Rory Melbinger passed Witt for third on lap 19. Mackesy won the race by six car lengths over, Back in second and Melbinger third.

A hard charger!  Shawn Stelzer (#40) who was dominant last seaosn in Pure Stocks here at Marshfield Super Speedway, has proven to be a tough competitor in the more powerful CWSSA Super Stocks.  Tonight he scored a feature win.

Cary Lyons led lap one of the CWSSA Super Stock feature. Jason Szymkowiak led for the following three laps. Cary Lyons reclaimed the lead for the next two laps until he lost it to Merle Weinfurter. Weinfurter led lap seven, on lap eight Cale Laessig took the lead.

Lap 11, a spin involving Laessig and Judd Brandl the top point runners, sent both to the rear. Shawn Stelzer now leading the race had to fight off Szymkowiak, running second. John Bell made his move on the re-start and made it to third. Stelzer won, Szymkowiak second, and Bell third.

Double duty!  Paul Menard (#81) had a full evening of racing at Marshfield Speedway competing in both the Legends and the Late Model divisions.  In the Legends he was dominant winning the feature after setting fast time.  While he had an impressive run in his first time behind the wheel of a Late Model winning the dash and recording a sixth place feature finish.

The lead of Legend feature was held by Dean Fisher for the first three laps. Dwayne Vetrone captured it on lap four, but Fisher challenged him back and regained the lead on lap eight. Paul Menard made his way from his 12th place start and into the lead on lap 12. Tom Pirkel in his first appearance at Marshfield passed Fisher for second on lap 13. Menard won, Pirkel, and Fisher third.

He broke the streak!  Randy Bargender (#24) broke the win streak of Doug Becker in the 1-man Cruiser class.  Bargender outdistanced Becker in the early going and had enough steam to hold off Becker for the win at the line.

Todd Hookstadt led lap one of the 1-Man Cruiser feature, Duwayne Davis led the next four laps and then lost to Randy Bargender. Bargender won, Doug Becker second and Don Tieman third.

A new team in the winners circle!  Chuck Green and Adam Sternweis (#73) took advantage of a miscue by race leaders Rodney Feltz and Tim Sobczak to take home this evening 2-man cruiser checkered.

The team of Chuck Green and Chris Sternweis won the 2-Man Cruiser event. Paul Hasenhorl and Scott Strigel second, and Rodney Feltz and Tim Sobczak third.

Next Saturday is Mid-State Truck Service Night, plus powder puff racing. Divisions racing are CWRA Late Models, CWSSA Super Stocks, 1- Man Cruisers and 2-Man Cruisers. Time Trials at 6 p.m., racing 7:30 p.m.  Marshfield Super Speedway is a half-mile paved oval, located three miles west of Marshfield, WI on county hwy H.
