Meulemans tops WCCN 107.5 fm The Rock - |
September 18, 1999; Marshfield, WI: - Three-time Midwest Endure Stock Car Series Champion Jeff Meulemans showed the way to the finish line as he took lead over Ken Smart with five laps to go to capture the win in the running of the WCCN 107.5 fm "The Rock" 250 at the Marshfield Super Speedway.
Meulemans was the overall winner and first in the "A" class payoff over Smart. Tom Imp captured the "B" class over Brian Hirt with Steve Just taking the "C" class over Denny Bandt.
In the 12 lap 2-man cruiser event following the 250 lap enduro, Rodney Feltz and Francis Esser took the win over Chuck Green and Chris Sternweis with Gary Schallock and Mark Virnig coming home in third
Dale Brandt set the early pace from his front row position with other front row contenders Frank Calabrese and Pete Severt in tow. Brandt suffered a flat tire on lap 15 relegating the top spot to Calabrese. By lap 25, however, Meulemans forged ahead and the multi-car battle began with Meulemans and Calabrese closely followed by Smart, John Waldman and Andy Szymanskyj.
At the first of four refueling pit stops on lap 55 it was Waldman taking the spotlight followed by Smart, Meulemans, Severt and Jared Pinkalla at the stripe. The red flag flew on lap 68 for Pinkalla as he came off turn four wide hitting the main straight-away retaining wall solidly turning his '73 Chevelle over and on to its roof. The 18 year old Pinkalla did not suffer any injuries and later returned to the race. When the race resumed Calabrese led the field until the next pit stop at the 105 lap marker.
The next 50 laps saw the three cars of Calabrese Meulemans and Smart swapping the lead with Calabrese again taking the field into the pit area on the third refueling stop on lap 155. Smart forged ahead on lap 180 to take the lead and then lead the field into the final pit stop on lap 205.
At that point, only the four cars of Smart, Calabrese, Meulemans and Darryl Traber were on the lead lap. Calabrese made a tire change during the break dropping himself back to the rear of the field on the restart. Smart got a great jump on the field at the drop of the green with Meulemans solidly in second with Calabrese and Traber a distant third and fourth place.
With approximately five laps remaining, Smart got caught up in lap traffic as the cars of Brandt and Jay LeBrun hooked bumpers causing Smart to slow. Meulemans, taking full advantage of the situation, forged into the lead and held off Smart to record his first victory of the season in a very dramatic finish.
The next Series event is scheduled for Saturday October 2nd at the 141 Speedway (Francis Creek, WI). For more information contact (414) 895-6682 from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., and for technical questions contact (414) 728-6240 from 6:00 p.m to 10:00 pm.
