Baldry best in Marshfield - CWRA "Fall Shoot Out"
Records fall during biggest show of 1999 season!

September 25, 1999; Marshfield, WI: -  It was a record setting evening at Marshfield Super Speedway, as the central Wisconsin half-mile paved oval presented it's second annual CWRA "Fall Shoot-Out". A track record 141 cars lined up for competition during the program including 55 late models which qualified in, which  established a new mark for entries in that division. Cars from nearly 10 area racetracks were on hand for the event which has quickly established itself as one of the premier events on the late racing season.

2nd Annual "FALL SHOOT-OUT" Winner - # 8 Terry Baldry, Omro, WI

92599b.jpg (21380 bytes) Terry Baldry (#8) turned in a strong performance this evening, winning both 50 lap Late Model feature events.  He also qualified third fast in an event in which 55 late models participated establishing a track record for late model entries.

When the dust settled Terry Baldry, of Omro, WI, would receive the largest check of the evening having scored victories in both 50-lap headliners and earning over $2,000 in the process. Baldry a six-time track champion at Wisconsin International Raceway, thrilled fans with his late race heroics as he stole the lead in each race with less than 15 laps to go.

The fastest of the 55 drivers on hand was Rod Wheeler, who toured the half-mile asphalt oval with a lap of 17.976 establishing a new mark for weekly late models at the track.  Wheeler was the only driver able to crack the 18 second mark. 92599a.jpg (18724 bytes)

31 cars would take the green flag for the first 50-lap Late Model main, with Dan Ratajczak pacing the opening three circuits of the race, before yielding the top spot to Tony Strupp. 1999 Marshfield Speedway track champion Rory Melbinger moved into the runner-up slot on lap six and began to challenge Strupp for the top spot. The race was slowed for the first time on lap 12, when Ratajczak spun in turn three. On the restart Strupp and Melbinger continued their duel. Contact between the pair resulted in Melbinger doing a quick 360 degree spin of turn four four just after the green. A caution flew, but Melbinger never stopped on the track and was allowed to retain a sixth position and Strupp remained at the point.

Underway again, Neil Knoblock, who moved into second prior to the caution, got a good restart and blasted past Strupp for the lead. The third and final caution would appear on lap 21 for a three cars spin. When action resumed this time it was Strupp with the jump, again taking the lead of the race. By the halfway point Strupp was still out front with Rod Wheeler now second and Baldry advancing to the third spot. Wheeler, who established a new track record in qualifying sliced to the inside of Strupp in turn two on lap 26 to assume command of the race, as Strupp fell back to the runner-up position. Strupp continued to apply pressure to Wheeler, but soon found his second spot in jeopardy as Baldry moved in as the lead trio ran nose to tail.. Baldry found room on the inside of Strupp as the pair raced off turn four on lap 34 and moved into the second position.

Baldry then set his sights on Wheeler and on lap 42 he moved to the outside groove and found the speed he needed to take the point. Baldry would pace the remaining distance to win the race by two car lengths over Wheeler. Jesse Haese, took control of third spot on lap 41 when Strupp went wide and came home in third, Melbinger claimed fourth, John Zimmermann was fifth at the line.

The second 50 lap main event saw the top 12 finishers inverted for the start, which put Kevin Tunks a regular at Madison International Speedway and Bruce Honkala from Norway Speedway in Michigan on the front row. The two were locked in a side by side battle for the lead when the first caution appeared when Gary Back and Wayne Brietenfeldt spun down the front stretch. Under the caution Breitenfeldt ducked into the pits, only to return as the race resumed. Breitenfeldt attempted to merge with race traffic on the backstretch only to have several cars check up at his sudden appearance resulting in contact between Chris Weinkauf and Strupp.

The accident ended the night for Strupp and caused Breitenfeldt to be banished to the pits. When action resumed Tunks grabbed the top spot as Honkala slowed turning second over to Legend car hotshoe Paul Menard. With Tunks hugging the low line and Menard racing in the high groove, the lead duo would wage a side by side battle that kept fans on their feet. Though Tunks would pace a majority of the laps, from time to time Menard would get a strong run off turn four and edge ahead by a few inches at the line. Tunks would then slip ahead on the next circuit to lead by the same margin of inches and both drivers fought for supremacy.

The duel lasted until lap 24 when Menard slipped just enough to allow Tunks to assume command. Meanwhile Baldry who had won the first feature was carefully picking his way through the tight traffic and edged under Menard for second on lap thirty coming off turn two. Baldry then closed on Tunks and challenged for the lead only to have a caution appear on lap 32 when Jim Carlson spun in turn four. The yellow period would be the undoing of Tunks as race officials stopped Tunks car on the frontstretch as it was visibly smoking. It was apparent that his car was dropping fluids and he took the car to the pits turning the lead over to Baldry.

Baldry paced the next two circuits with Zimmermann, who finished fifth in the first event following in his tire tracks, when the final caution appeared on lap 35, when Neil Knoblock and Haese spun.

The final 15 laps would thrill the fans. Zimmermann got an excellent restart and bolted past Baldry into the lead. Baldry quickly regained his composure and pulled back up on Zimmermann's rear bumper looking for a way back to the front. Preferring the outside line Baldry made several attempts to pull alongside Zimmermann, but Zimmermann met every challenge. Finally with two laps to go Baldry got a strong run off turn four and pulled alongside Zimmermann as the pair raced to the line. Baldry inched ahead to lead lap 48 by a nose before finally completing the pass down the backstretch as the pair headed for the white flag. At the checkered Baldry was ahead by less than a car length with Zimmermann having earned a hard fought second. Menard claimed third, this best ever performance behind the wheel of a late model, while Wheeler quietly moved into fourth in the closing laps to edge out Chris Weinkauf who recovered from his earlier incident with a solid top five run.

92599c.jpg (16267 bytes) Well earned!! Judd Brandl (#27) went wheel to wheel with race leader John Raupp during the Super Stock feature.  The pair ran side by side for over a dozen laps before Brandl managed to slip past for the lead and the win.

Not to be outdone the Super Stocks turned in a thrilling main event that was slowed by just two cautions in their 25 lap headliner. Polesitter John Raupp who normally races at Dells Motor Speedway waged a war with local racer John Bell for the lead during the opening circuits of the main event as the pair traded the lead back and forth. Raupp would pace the opening lap with Bell setting pace the next two circuits. Raupp then inched ahead again on lap four and got a bit of breathing room as Judd Brandl moved to the inside of Bell on lap five to assume second.

Raupp didn't get any time to relax as Brandl went to the outside lane and began to work on Raupp for the lead. Like the late model feature earlier the lead duo would run wheel to wheel. Brandl seemed to always stay ahead at the line by a couple feet but Raupp continued to hug the low line as the pair fought for the point. The only break in the action came on lap 16 when Dan Howard and Carl Saylor spun forcing a catuion.

When action resumed the lead duo went back at it. Brandl finally edged ahead alone on lap 20, with Raupp following in his tire tracks. Behind the lead pair Cale Laessig, the super stock track champion and Chad Brundidge were engaged in a similar duel for third. Leassig gained the upper hand and on the final lap he shot to the outside of Raupp in turn two to gain second.

At the wire Brandl had won by less than two car lengths over Laessig, with Raupp, Brundidge and Greg Back in the top five positions.

Charlie Menard (#27) won out in a family feud on the raceway as he bested his cousin Paul Menard during the Legend feature race.   The two Menard's did battle for the lead early before Charlie pulled away for the win. 92599d.jpg (16341 bytes)

The Legends presented a 25 lap contest as their headliner and Charlie Menard held off cousin Paul Menards, who raced double-duty this evening also racing in the Late Model division for the win. Dwayne Vetrone claimed third ahead of Adam Allpress and Scott Brandl.

Leo Schultz Jr., bested the field in the Pure Stock division while Tim Syvrud, Will Garske, Eric Severson and Rodney Smith made up the top five finishers.

92599e.jpg (17369 bytes) Pure stocks return!  The Pure Stocks at Marshfield Speedway were replaced by the 1-man Cruiser class this season, but they were added to the show for this special event.  Leo Schultz Jr., came home the winner of the feature race.

In single man Cruiser action Rodney Feltz who normally competes in the two man division dominated the event taking the victory over Don Tieman Jr., by nearly a half-lap. Fran Esser, Ric Anderson and Duwayne Davis made up the top five runners.

Jim Green and Adam Sternweis captured the two man event besting Mark Vernig and Gary Schallock.

The event was a successful conclusion to the 1999 racing season at Marshfield Speedway. The track would like to thank the fans and drivers for their support in 1999 and hopes to see evveryone back for the opening race of 2000, in April.
