Troy Nelson tops Mark Eswein in CWRA Late Model
feature action at Marshfield!

April 24, 1999; Marshfield, WI: -  The beautiful weather brought out 26 Great North Legends tonight, it was the first time the division ran this season. Matt Kocourek of Racine set fast time.  Brian Back set the pace for the CWRA Late Models and Cale Laessig was the quick timer for the CWSSA Super Stocks.

42499b.jpg (18645 bytes) Troy Nelson kept his car heading the right way and avoided the accidents which eliminated many of his competitors in the CWRA Late Model feature race at Marshfield Super Speedway.  The win was Nelson's first of the 1999 racing season at the half-mile paved oval.

Rocky Breezer and Pete Kempf fought for the lead of the CWRA Late Model feature the first six laps.  By lap seven Breezer had two new competitors challenging him for the top spot, as Jeff Weinfurter and Rory Melbinger gave chase.

Last season's CWRA Rookie of the Year Brian Back wound up making an off track excursion during the feature race.  In all six drivers were eliminated in accidents during the main event of tonight's program! 42499e.jpg (17719 bytes)

Two accidents on lap nine took out six drivers from the feature event.  Weinfurter took the lead on the restart.  Troy Nelson moved to the front and grabbed the lead on lap 18.  Nelson was followed by Mark Eswein, Tom Reffner and Wayne Breitenfeldt.  The top five held their positions to the checkered flag.

Defending Super Stock champ, Merle Weinfurter (#24) took home the win in the evenings feature event for the class.   The race finished under caution one lap short of the scheduled distance.

John Bell held the lead of the CWSSA Super Stock feature for 12 laps but couldn't hold off Merle Weinfurter, Cale Laessig, Judd Brandl, Jason Kirsling and Shawn Stelzer.  Weinfurter took the lead on lap 13.  As the top five changed positions each lap, and accident on lap 19 ended the race on the white flag lap.   Weinfuter won, Laessig, Brandl, Kirsling and Stelzer rounding out the top five.

42499f.jpg (15544 bytes) Scott Brandt bested a huge field of 26 Great North Legends in the feature race.  A late race caution kept the pack tight with the lead group crossing the line in close formation.  Brandt was out front of that pack when the checkered flag fell.

The Legend feature's first leader was Milt Kemp Jr..  The lead changed to Scott Brandt on lap four.  Pat Hinner, Kemp, Paul Menard and Curt Gnatzig followed.  By lap ten, lapped cars were a factor in the feature.  Brandt held on, Charlie Menard had moved into second and Paul Menard ran third. 

On lap 15, Aaron Soderberg moved into third and on lap 18 he took over second as Matt Kocourek made his move into the third position on lap18 behind Brandt and Soderberg.

Brandt held on to win the race with Soderberg second, Kocourek third, Paul Menard fourth and Charlie Manard fifth.

Darrell Paschel won the 1-main Cruiser feature followed by Glen Bargender, Chad Simone and Doug Becker.

The 2-Main Cruiser event was won by John Kampert Jr., and John Kampert Sr., besting Scott Voda and Gary Schallock.  Third place went to Jim Hansen and Tim Gulden.

Next weeks Saturday night racing prougram will be run in memory of Jake Schoenfuss.  Time trials are at 5:00 p.m. and racing begins at 6:30 p.m.  Divisions racing next week are CWRA Carquest Late Models, CWSSA Carquest Super Stocks, 1-Man Cruisers, Great North Legends and 2-Man Cruisers.

Cruiser cars come in two varieties this year.  The one man version replaces the pure stocks of last year and Darrell Paschell (#35) came home the winner in the feature race.

The "Team" or 2-man Cruiser class continues to be popular with fans and drivers and this weeks main event was won by the team of John Kampert Sr. and his son John Kampert Jr. (#01)
